Little Cayman, Christopher Columbus, and ...Burgess Meredith?
Each for his own reasons and 500 years apart, Christopher Columbus and Burgess Meredith both made landfall on the remote island of Little Cayman. In 1503 ...
This comment from Ms Bodden is typical of the ones I've been getting on my
blog: "I've watched this video a dozen times today. I'm so grateful to the
two gentlemen who shot it and preserved a tiny fragment of our history,
heritage and culture on a simple school project. It makes me realize that
we are all historians. Thank you, thank you." Shirley Lolita Bodden-Arch is
the Business Development Advisor at Cayman Islands Department of Commerce &
Investment Definitely struck a nerve.
I'm going to Little c for a quick trip starting April 4 and will def do
another. Your dad's property on Google Earth is at 19 degrees, 42', 15.14".
I have a little piece of land right next to your cottage. Since posting,
your video has had over 200 hits and is constantly being viewed. Do you
have any other Little Cayman visuals from that time? I have other videos
from Little. I'll send them on to you. Were you down there at that time
with early tv's Bob Banner's son?
Yes That is Bob Banner Jr.We went to college together and when we got back
to the States we had access to CBS film editing department because Bob's
dad was a top executive at the time. I had a super 8 camera on Little
Cayman that I shot some fun stuff of us and the house but it was stolen at
the airport when we got back! Too bad, I had some great stuff...Thanks for
the coordinates. I look forward to hearing from you again.
Thanks for sending it out. It's better than sitting on the shelf. It was
your video of Dad's property and your suggestion to upload our film that
inspired me. If you back to Little Cayman-do another video. I was looking
on Google earth to see the house but there are 3 or 4 houses along the
North Coast now. Do you know the coordinates of the house or what house it
is on the Sat map?
I've been trying to respond to you since early am. Hope this does not get
kicked back. I uploaded your video and sent it to the Little c community.
You've warmed the heart of many people around the world who have warm
feelings for Little c. The current owner of Southern Cross, who is, I
believe, the son of the original SC owner, positively loved it. Thanks.
Here's one for you, from my blog... Comment: To hear my grandfather (Olney)
voice 20 years after his passing was emotional, to put it mildly! As a boy
I made the thip to Little Cayman with him many times and stayed at the same
cottage. Thanks for a great film and a look back in time! Steve Scott
@finpik The property is on the remote North Coast of Little Cayman across
from Jacksons Pond. From my beachfront land up there, we can see the the
pier into the Caribbean built out from Burgess Meredith's cottage.
Burgess Meredith bought and built that cottage in the late 1960's because
his friend and real estate agent, Carl Marcum said it would be a good
investment. He visited a couple times in the 30+ years he owned it.
I stayed in that cottage for a week in 1972 and shot a documentary film of
Little Cayman. At the time there was no pier and no road. We got there by
boat.
