Those information helped me a lot to unerstand the concept of Multiliteracies. I'm a EFL learner and I know that visual and audio, texts learning helps me more than just texts when I don't have any prerequisite understanding of the topics.

In Indigenous communities a western world view is presumed to be the best way to teach literacy and maths. Children read books about non-indigenious people and things, never seeing their own lives held up as ideal - and then look at the skin colour of those working for and with them, and the content of most of the literature - and see, graphically, that NONE of it applies to them. I suggest reading Luis Moll's work on Funds of Knowledge to start to work out what to do.
