Portland Oregon to Victoria British Columbia Part 1 Preparing to Sail Home
Part 1 Preparing to Sail Home is where I begin to provision my West Sail 32 for her maiden voyage home to Victoria BC. I will document my journey up the ...
Hahaha! Go USA! ☺️. I still didnt hear how much she was . It didn't say . I
found a boat near me that is a 79 hunter with a re-fit ya mar engine .. I
don't know what re-fit means?
+Melissa DeMuth You would have marina fees plus your payment on the boat but keep no more then rent and it would be paid off in no time ... A re fit might be a replacement engine or a rebuilt engine. Also check eBay and craigslist.
Yes I need a lesson.. Haha! I have my boaters license but have only driven a motor boat .. A 24 foot boat .. What is a re-fit new yanmar engine ??? Is that bad ??? Your videos are fantastic .. Learning a bit any your info is even better .. If I got a boat financed I would keep it as low as possible . I desire to pay less then I am for everything now in rent .. If this is the case then I can pay it off fast .
+Melissa DeMuth You can get a personal loan for a boat but you do need a down payment. The bank will look at the all the usually stuff like employment. When I get messages from people saying they want to live aboard but cant afford a bot I think well you can afford rent so why not put your rent payments on a boat instead. Just make sure that the boat can be paid off quickly so you are not a slave to the bank for years and unable to leave the marina because of boat payments. Get a boat no more then $30,000 and pay for it in 2 or 3 years then you are free forever. If I were you I would take a simple boaters course that shows you all the basics. . they are usually not to expensive and it will give you so much confidence. then you just get better and better at seaman ship as time goes by. That is what I did and when I purchased y first boat I was comfortable in sailing her.
Oh okay ..., I'm so sorry I'm asking so many questions but your so helpful and have tons of experience from what I see. Can a boat be financed to get the money for a private seller ? That is what I'd have to do . I don't want to but I'd have to. THEN I have to figure out how to safely move a giant sail boat all by my tiny self with little knowledge .., scary ...
My Westsail was a little over $28,000 so I got a pretty good deal on the boat and the extras that came with it. A rebuilt engine just means it has been completely rebuilt with new parts.
just posted and for real if your ever down this way holler, you have a place to stay, hope to pick your brain a bit as I shop for a boat monies will free up when I sell our home in Town, our beach house is by the North Jetty in Port Bolivar Tx. Take care will chat again I'm sure
Doug listen for the Native singing at Neah Bay I thought it was pretty enchanting. I pictured the native people standing on the shore and singing out to sea hundreds of years ago. Pretty Cool
That's what I thought! It just so happened that while you were heading home
with your newly acquired Westsail I was also heading home with my newly
acquired Westsail through Haro strait and overheard on the radio and
though, hey that's a Westsail too! Anyways, follow me @
tonybentley.com/satori as we're in the same boat ...literally :)
Tony what are the chances we would be sailing our new Westsails home on the same day. I will check out your blog and I know we will be anchored n some harbor together over the next weeks and months. Sail safe.
Hi Tony you kind of heard right. I have to say you have a great memory. As the story goes I ran out of fuel in my port tank. I switched to my starboard but because the port tank went dry air got in to the lines. The engine would not start and I was slowly drifting towards Race Rocks.
The US flag on your stern is to keep a low profile because our US customs
policy to Canadian boats is very tough. You all are our brothers and
sisters yet our (US immigration) policies are very difficult and make non
US boats check in and out at every single harbor. When we sail to Canada we
are welcomed and cleared in and left alone to explore freely for a summer.
Good on ya! Congrats on the new boat too.
You are correct US customs is really tough at times on Canadians and they have a lot of power. The reason I flew the American flag on the Stern is that my boat was still registered with the US Coast Guard as an American vessel. Once I cleared customs in Canada I flew the Canadian Flag on the stern . Thanks for watching

Sailing Alberg 29 Port Angeles, Wa. to Astoria , Or.
Sailed an Alberg 29 down the Washington Coast with a stop in Neah Bay with a final destination of Portland Oregon. Great boat, great trip. Music by my friend ...
Why were you always under power, with a sail set it would have been more
present. I have made that passage on a SJ24 several times and a Cascade 27
and an Islander 28. Racing it never took us more than two and a half days
from Astoria to Victoria.
+Robert Phillips we were worried about not making the slack tide at the bar...and the wind was pretty light. It turned out that we made better time than expected and could have sailed more of it.
+Kevin McBee great video dude, but dont use that song again the bad english is annoying as hell LOL sounds like she is saying "that what lookin for" and im like no its "that's what I'm looking for" lol
+Steven Dyer It was! I wish they would have had more of a turnout! They didn't do the end of the show photo with the crowd like they usually do. And when Ryan talked about shrinking the venue, he seemed disappointed in the turnout. I was in the front row and loved it though!
