It was preparing to lay eggs. I had just caught one today, and did a little bit of research on it. When I found mine it had a bunch of eggs all around it, and the same thing coming from its butt. It wasn't done laying, and your potato bug was just beginning to lay its eggs.

I caught one a few days ago, besides maggots, and some weird huge white worm I saw in the water in some vid on Youtube, and black widows, truly the most disgusting creatures ever, strangely though, they seem about as intelligent as praying mantisis.
