Sarah's last name is about as Hawaiian as smith or jones.her xplanation as to how a.d why hawaii became a part of the u.s. simple minded at best. And mean spirited and inaccurate as well. The strategic impotance of hawaii, due to its location cannot be overstated.Hawaii had to align itself with a stronger nation in order to keep itself from being forcefully taken over by japan or any number of countries with ambitous plans. Once it was disco ered by the rest of the civilised world.its destiny was

+Tobi Watanabe oh tobi, does one need to misrepresent  hawaiian/american history in order to help preserve hawaiian culture etc.what we have here is 15 minutes of divisive inaccurate amarica bashing revisionist history!! I APPLAUDE her efforts bring attention to native hawaiian culture.but She is the one putting up barriers {or trying to anyway}.between people and cultures, not me .plying the blame game and embracing the role victomhood, was completely unecessary.and my wife, who is 50% percent native hawaiian, finds her use of the word "we" to be a liitle bit irritating.wanting to be a native hawaiian does make it so...

+Fon D Does a person even need to be a part of the people they are trying to help?  If everyone was like that (LIKE YOU), there'd be so many more barriers between people, between nations, between ethnicities.  You say that because she's ethnically Japanese that she should apologize for the bombing of Hawaii?  A child should not be made to bear the sins of their father.  If they did, how many people would you have to apologize to? How many sins have your fathers committed? You're saying that if someone doesn't belong to a group of people, they don't have to right to speak up for them?  How small minded. Did you bother to read the video description/her background? Guess what? SHE HAS EVERY RIGHT.  They are her people.  She's Hawaiian.

+Tobi Watanabe i think u too, can see the subtle differences.being japanese american born in hawaii, gives her as much right to speak for the  true hawaiian natives as a european american born in hawaii has...which is to say...NONE!!! i personally wouldnt dis the true hawaiians by speaking as if i was one of them, just because i was born in hawaii. All she did was blame America for the plight of ''her" people.[did i miss the pro-american comments?or even the neutral american comments? please, refresh my memory on these,i cant seem to recall any}.perhaps she SHOULD speak for her people, her "roots". by apologizing to the hawaiian people for bombing their beautiful island and killing many of them, during their attempt to forcefully take over the hawaiian islands.

funny little remark, but uh... NO, by forcefuuly, i mean bombed into submission, then being overun by invaders from a hostile country, who, then take everything from u, and kill u if you resist and then take your wives and daughters and use them as sex slaves for japanese soldiers*...the Hawaiiaan Queen signed the annexation agreement, selling out her people one last time. And the people of hawaii voted to become to become a state in 1961 {i think it was}. i know the differences are subtle, but i think u r smart enough to pick up on them.                                                                *this is a reference to what the japanese did to other "independant" island nations during WW2. in case u were wondering.

It had to "keep itself from being forcefully aligned with Japan" kinda like the way it was forcefully aligned with the US?  Hark, is that ignorance I hear?

@Fon D, Please do the entire world a favor and get off of your colonialist high horse. Hawaii doesn't need your Euro-centrism. Neither does America. It needs people like Sarah who are fighting to give a voice to those who have been unrightfully oppressed for far too long.

i didn't know that a person needed a hawaiian last name to fight for hawaii.  "mean spirited" hmmm…i doubt the hurt feelings from this ted talk equates to the near complete destruction of a nation. annexation and the illegal overthrow of hawaii's gov/monarchy was the ONLY way?  it was one sided and it was forced…that's really the bottom line. from the continental US to hawaii and alaska, it has always lead to pushing aside the natives (and that's putting it way too gently). are any of the native populations thriving? but now when the natives want a voice for themselves and want a little self sustainability, you tell them to be more american and be proud to be american….oh okay. you must know her personally, huh? she must've told you that she wasn't proud to be american, right?  there's a huge huge difference between pro-hawaii and anti-america.
