JBL Flip Black v White - Bluetooth problems demo/review by KemptonTestLab
Oct 26, 2015 Update: Steps to reset your Flip 2 (this may?? work) “Turn on the flip, hold down ( volume + phone symbol ) together for 3 secs .... easy peasy!
@Dino Davinci Thanks for sharing your experiences. BT is one of those
things (as I advice people), if the device (Flip) work for your specific
purpose, great, good for you! I can't say for sure but six months means you
likely have the 1st gen Flip antenna. Re your idea of "magnetic, static,
problem where you live", that is not a reason to me. Logitech's speakers (2
models) perform with ZERO problems. All BT speakers should work happily
with other FCC approved equipment and Flip just flipped out!
Yikes, Sorry to hear you have the same problem but I am not surprise (given
my problems). JBL has got back to me after my complains and I will see what
will they do. JBL has public Facebook (JBL), Google+ (+JBL) and Twitter
(JBLaudio) pages, you can try contacting them and see. If the store has
good return or exchange policy and you are still within that
no-question-ask exchange/refund/return date, you can also try refunding at
store. Problem is none of the other $100 speakers sound as good.
@GuitarSal66 Fair question. First of all, I LOVE the sound too! Thats why I
can it a DIVA because of the BT. Now, even Harman/JBL agree the coverage
distance should be further. Check out my article (see link in description)
and you will see Harman actually changed the antenna design to fix the
problem. Also check out my other tests in the playlist where you can see,
for example, the Logitech UE Mobile covering my own house flawlessly! It
surprised me that it even play from the basement.
Glad to hear the short distance works for you and you are happy. The
trouble I have with it is that other reviewers and even JBL expect much
better BT range from the Flip. And even in my test video, the two Flips
show serious enough difference in BT performance. I expect a much better BT
performance from JBL. And I suspect JBL expect and like to deliver much
better performance for all the buyers of its products, not just who use
Flip right next to their wireless device.
@surfordie82 The 2nd gen JBL antenna is sure better than 1st gen but is
still not perfect (see my tests re Flip 5 & 6, both have 2nd gen antennas).
Re: serial number cut off, someone told me that he got this from JBL
support, "serial number cutoff. It is GG0054-189100." The serial number of
the JBL is on the outside of the box of all my flips (6 of them) so you can
check against that before purchase. Do share your result if you get a 2nd
gen Flip. Good luck.
@nick dar By the way, I would have suspect it was my phone too but I tested
it with my iPad as well. Have you read my reviews yet? Do you know there
are two generations of JBL Flip antennas? Do you know I have SIX JBL Flips
in my test lab? Four sent by Harman/JBL to me? I recommend you have a watch
of my 7 in-depth review videos. 2 out of my 6 Flips has the 2nd generation
antennas. Read my reviews and watch my reviews and comment again please.
I have 2 jbl flips they work both fine in distance. No different from other
Bluetooth devices. You have a magnetic, static, problem where you live.
Comes down to frequencies. Each company uses different Bluetooth freq's. I
don't know if I have 1st gen of flips or not, I got them when they first
came out 6months ago. They work fine, no problems. I don't think you can
compare the eu boom box to the flip. The flip is 100 times better.
@fotopup1 JBL's bad BT antenna is a given if you have the 1st gen antenna
(someone shared the serial number cut-off, and I posted it somewhere on my
reviews). re cut off, is your Flip timing out by power-safe or something? I
think mine do that too!!! Which is stupid annoying. Shut the speaker down
only a few minutes of non-use? WTH!!! And I had to keep turning OFF and
then ON the speaker! Sounds familiar?
@fotopup1 will you share what the tech support say? I had enough problem
with the BT antenna, I kinda gloss over the stupid annoying power-safe
shutoff problem. I don't know if this is an annoying "design feature" ? I
for one hate the power safe! When I plug the speaker to the charger, it is
wasting my power already (I don't think they shut off the charger) so why
power safe the Flip?
Thanks for sharing your test results! I wonder how soon will JBL realize
they have been selling some defectives speakers! I still hope it is just
the BT chipset! None of the magazine reviewers pick up this serious
problem?! Just found their Twitter handle @JBLaudio And their Facebook
account is just facebook dot com slash JBL ! OK, guess what am I going to
do next! :)
still way better than the square expensive box that only looks cute.. this
device(FLIP) cost a third of the price than the big jawbone and sounds
twice better than it. I personally dont have any problems with any of
them(since I have both models) but the flip is definitely a better and
cheaper device in comparation with the big jawbone..
Yikes, sorry to hear. I am running Mac OS 10.6.8 which doesn't seem to play
well with the Bluetooth either but then I assume it is the issue with an
older OS. I am willing to go hard wire if I am using my notebook computer.
So far my phone can connect to the Flip easier, the problem is the signal
strength just suck like no tomorrow!
Really? Is this the smartest comment you can leave? Do you know that
Harman/JBL has changed Flip during the production? I guess not. And do you
know what they changed was the antenna design? I guess not again. Did you
read the article I post (link in the description) that actually has a
picture of the changed antenna? Oh, no too?
It's a real problem you idiot. I got this issue as well. you can see these
complaint anywhere on the internet. It even worse if you put bluetooth
source into the pocket, range is decreased into 3-6 feet. now I'd contacted
JBL distributor in my country and I was sent this video link to them as
well, Thank you Lam.
Do you make this claim based on experience with just have JBL Flip alone?
Well, fortunately, Logitech's BT and Bose's BT perform much much better
than the crappy Flip BT I've shown here. And looks like other Flip's
performance is better than this too. Will see when I talk to JBL customer
service rep.
@Perlnx Thanks for sharing your issues here so others can see the variety
of problems Flip can have. Yes, I have similar issue with putting my phone
a Samsung Galaxy Nexus in my pocket. For the test, I took it so I want to
make sure all can clearly see the problems.
Why are you walking away with your device, it sounded great when you were
10 feet away and didn't turn around. I'm just saying why do you need to be
so far away from the speaker. For the money I think is a pretty good
product.
Have you seen the pic of the two antenna in my article (link in the
description)? Check it out. Those antenna pix are directly from
Harman/JBL's FCC filings which you can get a copy yourself if you are geeky
like me.
@Luigi DeVicente Do you know there are two generations of JBL Flips with
two types of antenna? If you want to learn more, read my full review to
learn something about the antenna problems I researched and wrote about.
Dude its a Bluetooth speaker...most people who use Bluetooth mics with
their phones are only about 2 feet from the device ..be glad u can go as
far away as u do ..having no wire attached at all to me is incredible.
I got this issue as well. range is just 3 meters and i can't even take my
iPad into the bed. sound quality is fantastic, no doubt, but with this
antenna range. even my bluetooth headset can go beyond 5 meters.
You are welcome, glad you find my article useful. I hope you sort out the
problem to your satisfaction with your distributor. Let us know how things
turn out with your Flip.
Mine keeps cutting out while it's connected to my computer, not via
bluetooth. Also won't connect to my iphone some of the time. It is in the
bad antenna serial range.
So how can I ensure that I purchase a Flip with the 2nd gen antenna? It's
February now, but no way of telling if companies still are selling the
first batch of flips
@Jose Ayala We tested the Jambox and never liked its sound when turned up
high. Glad that the Bluetooth works for you. Does your Flip puts itself to
sleep randomly?
@nick dar It is not my phone. I've done 7 of these review videos on this
series. I suggest you watch them for yourself first before coming to a
quick judgement.
@gandalfheng Both my Android and iPad had the same problems with the first
gen Flip antenna. Both my Android and iPad work OK with the second gen Flip.

Unboxing HMDX Jam Party bluetooth speakers + Audio demo comparison with JBL Flip 2
In this video we take a quick look at the Jam Party boombox by HMDX. To get an idea of the audio quality we've compared it against the JBL Flip 2 at the end.
I've owned 2 of the Jam Plus speakers for almost a year now. These things
are no toys. Love them enough to buy my younger brother the Jam party for
the holidays (he doesn't know yet). But these things are bad ass. I've
played with many of the bluetooth speakers. Jam destroys all other
bluetooth speakers for quality, let alone price. I'd buy the HDMX jam plus
before I bought the jbl flip. Certainly jam party over the flip any day.
