Gee, I don't use it on Facebook, but I think it should work anywhere pretty
much. As an alternative you can use any keyboard to get an umlaut. Google:
How to type an umlaut on Facebook, and read the eHow for instructions. Of
course, if you're going to be typing a lot of them, this method is
cumbersome.
The U.S. International keyboard is only for languages that use the Roman
alphabet. For Russian or Chinese, for example, you need a Russian or
Chinese keyboard, and then in the same place where I selected U.S.
International keyboard, you have to select the Russian or Chinese keyboard.
