1986 AMC Eagle Off-Road TEST DRIVE | AutoMoments Time Warp
Before wheel slip detection and torque-vectoring software, the AMC Eagle revolutionized the 4WD world with its viscous coupling transfer case. Sadly, financial ...
Thank you for your video. It is very well done and it shows a deep
knowledge of cars and great sense of humour. People like Jay Leno
concentrate on supercars and I appreciate you focus on 'normal' cars.
+elmo tanner Yes! That is the whole reason why we do this! Normal cars need love, too. These are the money-makers that allow companies to build expensive supercars. Thanks for watching!
I currently have 7 AMC Eagles, and had 12 at one time.. I have driven an
Eagle up until several months ago. All that I have driven has gone over
200,000 miles and were running when taken off the road to put another one
on. They are awesome cars and I will be putting the one I've used as a
daily for 16 years back one the road. I have a barn full of parts to keep
my Eagle going until I can't. I was upset to see the last independent
automaker fade away. This video really hit home with me, and want to thank
you so much for posting it.
+Fred Bush Thanks, Fred! We love hearing stories from our viewers about their cars. It sounds like you had quite the collection of Eagles! Thanks for watching!
Very good!! Love the video. These are amazing cars. In fact, I used to own
an '81 SX/4 (the two-door hatchback version based off the Spirit) and I
loved it. Unfortunately, frame-rot killed it. But even to this day in the
interior of British Columbia, there are STILL Eagle Wagons prowling the
highways in winter.
This is a story I must share. In 2002, I was attending Vocational School
and one of my classmates (Paul) was very much a Chevy guy with a jacked up
4x4 Chevy and an older Toyota 4-Runner. His truck needed an engine
overhaul, and his wife needed the 4-Runner so, on a whim, he bought an
older AMC Eagle Wagon. The first day he drove it to school, I, being the
only AMC fan, loved the car as I had my SX/4 at the time. Paul, along with
the rest of the class all felt it was a complete pile of garbage, but it
was cheap. I casually mentioned that when winter comes around, pack a long
chain and some jumper cables. When he asked why, I simply told him: "When
it happens, you'll know."
Sure enough, winter rolls around and the first heavy snowfall Paul is late
for class. He shows up about an hour later looking physically exhausted.
When asked what happened and why was he late, he glares at me with a look
that could kill and he says: "Everybody who had driven off the road,
flagged me down! And because I had a chain, I could easily pull them out!!"
Turns out, on his drive to school that morning, he stopped and pulled no
less than four people out of the ditch, many of which were large trucks or
SUV's. All were saved by the discount, aging AMC Eagle. In this area, they
are known for their winter prowess. So if you're stuck in the ditch and
need help, the ONLY car you flag down is an AMC Eagle.
A year later, our training is ending, Paul has rebuilt the engine in his
Chevy and now had three vehicles for two people. He was also moving to
Vancouver Island. When I inquired if I could purchase the Eagle, he told me
that it had become such a reliable member of the family, he and his wife
were selling their 4-Runner and KEEPING the Eagle!
I remember the 80s. I was way too young to drive. I remember shows like the
A-Team. I remember "President" Ronald Reagan. I remember cars like this.
Although no one in my family ever owned or driven an AMC Eagle 4wd, I used
to see them a lot.
I've always liked its basic styling. It's dated, but still attractive. It's
an unforgivable disgrace that Chrysler didn't take the Eagle 4wd when they
bought Jeep. I prefer an American car built in either the USA or Canada. :)
+AutoMoments You're welcome. I totally agree. It's an unforgivable shame that Chrysler didn't take it along with the Jeep. Thanks for vids of cars. I just subscribed for that reason. :)
I know someone thorough Flickr that has one of these but his is green. it
has been in car shows too. think these are cool so unique. Mustangs and
Vettes and all those may be great but hom many to it is just another one of
them. you look at the Concord and you rarely see these type car around
now. there are many others too like that mostly wagons 4 door cars and
economy cars that have a certain cool factor now
Just checking around a 1980 AMC Eagle, fairly complete, that was given to me perhaps six or seven years ago at least. I have yet to really even use any ...

i remember as a kid, I was over my grandmothers house and playing outside
always loving & staring @ my grandmother ruby red '86 Caddy Sedan DeVille &
then my Aunt had Pulled up with one of this these things in the drive way
as I kid I new most of my cars because I love cars but this car my aunt was
driving scared me It was green with a tan roof & it was the sedan model. I
was scared of that thing it sat up so high off the ground. Thank God it was
just a loaner I thought I was going to eat me.lol
My former boss had an AMC/Jeep franchise. He said that every winter, he
would take an Eagle wagon. He said that he loved the way that the car drove
and that is was great in the winter. He was also a 6'5" beanpole, and he
said he loved the comfort. Even after owning all sorts of luxury cars, he
said that the Eagle was his favorite.
+IamRafe Ah! Ok. While you were showing us the car, you were showing us some patina, some imperfections on the car. I don't mind patina, as long as it doesn't penetrate into the car. How long did you have the car before you sold the car? :)
There's a story on this eagle if anyone cares to read it. Go to google and
type in "amc eagle jalopnik nice price or crackpipe" and it's the very
first link. Enjoy. I was looking for an eagle around the time this was
sold, too bad I'm in North Carolina. Ended up going up to PA and getting a
83 SX4 and rebuilt the 258.
the gremlin was a hornet with a few feet chopped off the spirit is a
chopped off eagle/concord/hornet eighteen years , same unibody. hell they
even kept the same dash till at least 1980 they added 2 engines a gm 2.5l 4
and a volkswagen 2.0 l 4 dropped the 304 in 1977 , i think
I miss my old 84 eagle 4 door sedan with select drive 4x4 had to get rid of
it number 6 piston shattered and couldnt afford to have the egine rebuilt.
and couldnt find a good 4.0 that had a carb intake on it.
the fun thing about the eagle is for the majority of what you were doing
you dont even need four wheel drive my dad has an 81 SX/4 eagle he hasn't
modified it at all and always out does jeeps on off road.
This only reinforces the stereotype that us AMC guys are "weird". We are,
but that doesn't mean we have to display it to everyone. LOL! Great vid.
Bashing around on that dead PW looked like fun!
those tires look to be Cooper stt's...i run em on my Jeep...in the 33 inch
size of course...i sold em where i used to work...my jeep was the

I got myself a title to one of my dream cars. This one is a keeper if you haven't already guessed that based on how i'm literally giggling over it like a school girl.
Just wondering here knowing that you live in Michigan you guys might have
some rough weather. How was the Eagle during the winter? Any break downs?
When starting up was there any difficulty? Thanks!
+TuAnh Duong Starts up fine below zero, sometimes fires up first crank. Only got stuck once plowing through snow 2 ft deep and ended up getting high centered partially in a ditch, broke a cv trying to get out. Otherwise I can run 55 mph when everyone else is only managing to do 30 and I've done some impressive snow drifts easily.
Did they ever make a 2 door wagon? Nice ride! I love me some AMC, I want an
eagle, gremlin, and javelin... Just need to get rich. Thanks for the
awesome video.
+Michael You sure can. Ive taken my Eagle to a local garage a few times for ball joints and wheel bearings. Then again the Eagle is pretty easy to work on. Did most of my firsts such as pulling the transmission and carb work on it. Even disabled the computer from the engine which meant cutting a select few wires and rerouting them.
+Michael Not sure as they are harder to find and no one online seems to post about whether or not they leak. I think they only made like less than 1500 eagles that year.
+TuAnh Duong Its been pretty good. Obviously there are going to be issues with any 30 year old car like all the suspension bushings, vacuum lines and such. Eagles do have the notorious leaky valve cover for all 81-88 258s that can only be fixed by an omix-ada valve cover and by tapping the unused holes to mount it and the carter carbs are finicky at best but those can be easily swapped with a ford carb. I have all the vids of me doing those except the valve cover but its on its way....
My grandma from my dad's side had a green '82 Eagle wagon. I went to visit
her in 1998 for the first time since I was a kid, walked into the garage
and saw it sitting there. As a 17 year old I thought it was the strangest
car I have ever seen. I never saw one before, nevermind the fact that I
never even heard of AMC at this point. I was so puzzled by this vehicle.
"This some sort of off-road wagon?" I thought.
+LoudProudNPunk1 just about. AMC did a final update to it removing the fuel pump casting off, adding more coolant passages, shortening up the stroke and gave it a Renault fuel injection. Thats about when Chrysler took over and made a few changes over the years but its pretty much the same motor, it will bolt right into an Eagle, you just need an electrical fuel pump.
+LoudProudNPunk1 The first crossover done backwards in comparison to modern crossovers. A car with a jeep drivetrain rather than an SUV body on a FWD car chassis lol. Way too ahead of its time.
nice eagle Tom, yours isn't missing an option even the top tow option. just
got an '84 limited wagon. need to do the bearings an the cat has a hole. so
I'll lose that. close to yours leather power everything even faux wood
paneling
Yeah it seems to have every option except a rare top f the line radio, although mine has the hard to find radio. Im sure yours wont let you down either.
