+Kaitlyn Davis If it's going into a ceiling where no light fixture exists, it will require running electrical wiring and a light switch. Same as if it was a ceiling fan where none existed. In my case, I got quotes ranging from $150 to $250 on thumbtack dot com...but some are licensed, some are not. Some installers are one person or father/son operations while others are companies with employees.
Pretty long video but at least I learnt how its done in US. You guys built
houses in funny way. My question is, can I do such work on my own in my own
house or do I need to call some inspector and get the job approved?
I am trying to wire a new ceiling fan from scratch to a switch that
controls an outlet in the same room...when taking out the switch(single
pole) there was one black wire on one side and one white on the other and
the ground wasn't connected...I decided to go with a single pole 2 switch.
So this is where the problem arises...I connect the existing black to one
side on the bottom switch and the existing white to the opposite side...the
outlet across the room works the same...but then I wired the black wire
from the fan to the top switch above the existing black wire and the white
to the other side...just like the other switch...(and the ground to the
ground) and no power to the fan...the top switch is connected with the
bridge from the lower black wire...I talked to an electrician and he said
that I don't even need the white(neutral) from the fan...he said cap it
off..I'm confused...I even tried wiring the white in junction with another
white from another outlet...(basically spliced into it) and all kinds of
craziness happened....the fan only turned on when the light was on in the
outlet and it only operated at half the speed...I looked up wiring diagrams
but can't seem to find the correct one...can anyone help????
+jared rusk my advice is to call an electrician who can fix the problem. to fix this you need to know how to wire switches, outlets, fans and lights and how to use a multi meter. Also knowing the NEC code would be a good thing. if that is not you, call someone who is.
Wow! That's really good work.
How much does a job like that cost?
I would like to install a ceiling light from scratch just like shown in the
video.
Wish I can hire you to do the job.
Very through, except for the part where the fixture gets wired up....nice
up to showing the final product without showing what wires go where. For
instance, the 'traveler' wire, recoded black...where does that go?
I made a mistake on the wiring. Do it this way. Power to switch is a white wire relabeled to red and then use the black wire to take power from the switch to power the new light fixture. I hope that helps.

What if you encounter other hot and neutral wires that are pigtailed
together that were NOT attached to the old fixture? Say you have a single
bulb fixture that will be replacing the old single bulb fixture - white to
white, black to black, but there are also two other sets of wires that were
caped together and were not attached to the old fixture. Im assuming those
are for something else and should be left alone. You wouldn't de-cap them
and tie them into the new fixture would you?
+Corey Johnson Forgive the late response. I missed yours. Let me just say that the video is really intended for how to install a light fixture. There are a few differences to take into account when installing a ceiling fan. There is the weight and vibration the fixture places on the electrical box and as a result there is a need for a brace in many instances. In addition, the box itself may need to be replaced. There is also the absolute need for the fixture to be grounded. Also, some fans are remote controlled and have the receiver to take into consideration. If you're considering installing a ceiling fan, I would take these things into consideration, along with reading the manufacturers installation instructions in their entirety. Again, sorry about the late response.
Love watching your videos. Instructions and audio are clear and I really
feel like I will be able to do this, the minor drywall repairs, and the
caulking after watching your videos (several times each). My supplies are
being gathered and the 'moment of truth' will be coming soon.
+Lori Chiov Good luck, Lori, I know you can do it!! :) Feel free to write me if any questions come up once you get started that weren't addressed in the video.
How to Install Ceiling Light Fixtures : Connecting Light Fixture Wires
Learn how to connect light fixture wires correctly and with as little danger as possible in this free video. Expert: Jon Olson Bio: Jon holds a Bachelors of Science ...
As this video and the associated videos provide clear and basic
information, you are showing how to install a ceiling fixture in an opening
far larger than the light box. Boxes need to be flush and tight with the
sheetrock. Sheetrock is a fire barrier and when tight with the box will
contain a short and keep sparks from entering the ceiling space above. Your
video ignores this most basic safety compliance issue. If the light fixture
shorts a fire will occur in the ceiling space above.
@IfunyunsI dont be confuse with the ground wire.. it will work without
connecting the ground.. the main purpose of grounding in the equipments is
for safety of the user. just in case the live/hot wire touch the metal
casing of the equipment, the current flows to the ground. so the even you
touch the equipment the current will not flow thru your body to the ground.
in ac circuit, there is no problem interchanging the hot wire and nuetral.

Thanks for the explanation....it helped me A LOT...I was going nuts b/c
when I took down the old fixture the black was capped off and the red
single one was connected instead. I was going to follow suit with the new
one but decided to look it up first b/c even though the old one was working
fine hooked up that way I did not know why that extra one was there. Now I
do Thanks to your explanation !!
I don't have a white, a black, and a bare copper ground. I have 3 blacks
twisted together, 3 grays twisted together, and a red and brown also
twisted together. I think the gray is the hot one because only when the
voltage tester is touching the gray does it light up (as long as it's
touching one of the other wires too). What the heck shold I do? thanks.
I am still confused about the ground wire. If there is a grounding screw on
the new light fixture, do you just attach the ground wire from the light
fixture to the ground screw and forget about the ground wire that is coming
out of the ceiling??? I am attempting to change my first light fixture
ever, and I dont want to do anything wrong.
I had a red too. Both red and black tested hot. I just used a wire nut and
then taped it up with electrical tape. Works fine. My electrician told me
to do that. Normally they use that if there is a separate switch for a
paddle fan with a separate switch on the wall for a light. I put a
chandelier up instead. Hope that helps.
i have a light fixture that does not have a black or white wire. there is a
ground wire and two other wires that are silver....they are not bare. just
the ground wire is. how do i connect a fixture with this configeration?
thanks.
Nice video- and nice lighting fixture. A closeup of what you did with the
wires before fitting them into the wire nuts would be helpful for the
newbies like me, but great video overall. Thank you!
Dude, every one of these damn things is nothing more than you telling
everyone your damn name and absolutely nothing useful about installing
ceiling light fixtures. Are you retarded?

I am grateful for your suggestions and am keeping these in a folder. I do
want to add to the concern about the "energy saving" light bulbs. The
packaging is excessive to protect should one of these bulbs break in the
store. The light is harsh and changes the colour of items in the home. I
use full spectrum bulbs that provide a light like sunshine.
Millions of these mercury containing so-called energy saving light bulbs
are being disposed of as ordinary waste, potentially contaminating our
soil, air and groundwater over time. This is an environmental and health
disaster to come. There are strict rules as to disposal and cleanup should
one of these bulbs break.
Ok,,,,,,,But.....I tried this but I had four wires coming out iof the
electrical box. I ignored the red one and followed these instructions. When
done, I flipped the circuit breaker to "ON" and the light worked....but the
wal switch did not turn it off.... What did I do wrong?
now try that in England, with strict regulations (no wire nuts, insulation
bare earth wire, etc), as well as 5 different cables hanging out of the
ceiling. not as easy
