My teacher said that synthetic division does NOT work when (x-k) and k is negative!

+Tanner Thoma well thats a very silly thing to say.

In general, I think synthetic division is an advanced skill that shouldn't be taught in tandem with long division. Long division will suffice for a student until it becomes well learned.

+Tanner Thomas In order to divide polynomials using synthetic division, you must be dividing by a linear expression and the leading coefficient (first number) must be a 1. For example, you can use synthetic division to divide by x + 3 or x – 6, but you cannot use synthetic division to divide by x2 + 2 or 3x2 – x + 7.

Unfortunately, your teacher is incorrect. We can indeed use synthetic division when k is negative.
