Yes indeed. I was originally shooting for an Imperial Stout, but the
experiment dictated no more than 18 lbs of grains (and California yeast). I
also should have mashed about 4 - 5 degrees higher. The flavor is fantastic
though. It allowed me to categorize it as a Robust Porter and play with the
SJ beer name. It would have been a "good" stout, but it is an "excellent"
robust porter. Ha ha! You're a great reviewer and I really like the
cross-over of these two communities. Dan is awesome too!
Evidently not crazy enough. Evidently, I should of added some smoked malts.
LOL! Actually, I really liked the results. But soon you can be the judge of
that. We made a large batch and made 9 bottles of it with Bourbon added.
The bourbon had been sitting on dark american oak and vanilla beans for 7
months. I'll be sending a bottle to SJ & ManBearPig. It will likely mellow
out the other flavors, but I'm excited to try it none the less. Brew Balls
to the Wall! Cheers!!!
Wow that is a kick ass label for that porter. Ya know you don't wanna full
mouth feel for a porter right? Thanks for the shout out, but could you
please leave out my middle name? lol Yeah that is perfect because that is
one review that I would really like for more people to see. It does have a
home brew connection too because the guys who made it started off as home
brewers. and I know this thanks to Dan ABA so shout out to him.
Thanks Ryan. Yeah, many of the ingredients were dictated by the experiment.
And mashing higher would certainly make for a fuller body. I will
definitely tweak this recipe, change the yeast and mash temps to make a
stout. Bend OR has really blossomed since I was last there. So many
breweries now. Great restaurants, lots of hiking, golf, etc. I'll have to
stay longer than a weekend next time.
I'm not normally the one in the family that likes to hike but for a view
like that...I would certainly hump my ass up a trail. Down here there's
just nothing worth hiking in my immediate area but there are a few places I
would certainly do it. Yosemite, Hawaii and Oregon come to mind. I can't
wait to get some of your home brew, it looked really tasty.
Well... we mixed it up a bit. The hikes were peaceful for sure. We also
enjoyed the towns night life "First Fridays". The first Friday of every
month all the art galleries, restaurants and some shops stay open late.
It's a big party of locals and tourists. Great food, wine, beer. That
coupled with hikes and scenery during the day was perfect. Cheers!
Portland and Bend should be on every beer drinkers bucket list for sure. So
many great breweries. The robust porter (technically imperial porter at
8.8% ABV) is really nice. I look forward to making this again. Probably in
the fall for a winter beer. Glad you enjoyed the video. Cheers!
I love the green, green area where I live, but it was sure nice to be in a
little warmer drier weather for the weekend. The high desert chaparral area
is pretty nice too though. Love the area where the trees meet the high
desert. I'm sure I'll have a boat load of beer here soon.
Brett is the scenery master of video. He does such a great job setting up
so many of those scenes. I truly enjoy his opening videos for sure. The
beer is fantastic. Wish I had a barrel full to bottle and ship to everyone.
Really enjoying the little I have left. Cheers!
Always add more hops! I can always give you some advice on that. ;) Haha,
that label is awesome. Sounds like maybe you should have mashed higher for
that beer. I like the ingredients you used. Lot's of beautiful Oregon
footage. Can't wait to get back up there.
Great scenery, so nice to see blue skies, ours are a constant shade of grey
at the moment, with the occasional rainbow breaking through. I have 1 of my
SJ beers put aside ready to send over to you, will let you know when the
"yeast sample" ships. Cheers
Ha ha ha! Provided I can properly filter the sound, I will put out a review
of the tasters from Crux. I also recorded a review of their Tough Love
Banished Imperial Stout. My one word description of that beer is... Damn!
Cheers!
I can make one recommendation to you for hiking. Take the tram from Palm
Springs up to the San Jacinto Wilderness area in early summer. (Like now.)
Great hikes and views. Pretty sure you'll like the porter.
I use a Sony movie camera. Honestly, it drive me a bit crazy. The auto
focus goes out of focus too oftern. Yeah, the SJ porter is really good.
It's sad to have to ship most of it. ;-) Cheers Glenn!
Man great stuff, your SJ beer sounds tasty, sounds like a nice re-brew
project with a Belgian & English yeast strain compare, wow what scenery,
that place has been added to my bucket list. Cheers
That porter looks and sounds amazing. I hope I get to enter the next
challenge, I think I got into brewing a little late for this one. Nice trip
you had as well - beautiful scenery. Cheers !
Thanks. It will be time consuming and a bit costly for sure. But the
results will be really cool. We'll have to do an experiment closer to
winter and get you involved. ;-) Cheers to that!
Truly a beautiful area. Glad you enjoyed the video. Wow! I look forward to
trying one of you beers for sure. Oops... I mean "yeast sample" are my
passion, as odd as that sounds. Cheers!
German Chocolate Cake
German Chocolate Cake is a typical German dish....NOT Subscribe to our Germany vs USA on YouTube //bit.ly/GERvsUSA_Subscribe and friend us on ...
+TheSonicMisfit lol black forest cake sounds so creepy :D :D D: btw Zweibrücken is not far from where I live :) (I live in Saarland) //www.airius.de/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/bundeslaender-deutschland.gif (You can find it on the map) ;)
I think you mean "Zweibrücken" (which actually means "two bridges")we have black forest cake --> Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (Black Forest Cherry Cake) =)
German Chocolate Cake is my favorite kind of cake and I always want one for
my birthday cake. The weird thing is that I hate coconut and the ONLY way
I like it is in the German Chocolate Cake frosting. I could tell as soon
as they opened the box that that cake was a lousy one. The best are
homemade by your Scotts-Irish great grandma, if you're lucky enough to have
one. Mine died years ago and her recipe was lost. Way to go Grandma and
Mom. :(
That's somehow similar to my view on eggs. The only way to make me eat eggs is to fry them and put the on a Vietnamese dish, like a topping. I'm German, by the way.
