just tried this one,i think it was my first black ipa.i thought of the Stormking as well and picked up on the pineapple,alot of other reviewers say tropical fruits.I think Stone is a bit over rated but they seem solid.I can picture a better black IPA,but it was very good. 89

Nice review guys! sick beer! Got this a few weeks ago here in jersey and loved it. Love how it meshes the characteristics of an American ipa (hops bitterness citrus) and a stout (creamy dark roasted malts).... keep em coming.

@CBABitz that is true! I still think they're up & coming, though; after being named 2006 Great American Beer Festival - Small Brewing Company of the Year, they've been steadily increasing in size & popularity. I'm excited to see what they can do with some more ca$h, cause they are already fantastic. PS Just picked up the 'Red Rocket' for next week, have you tried it?

This brewery has been around for a long time. They've been distributing to the east coast for quite a while. "up and coming" I'm not sure that's true. Their beers are great though. Cheers!

Had this for the first time about two years ago, traveling in NC. It immediately became one of my favorites, but couldn't get in PA where I live until a couple of months back. Great review, for me the highlight was right after the first sip when you mention the maltiness. Strong malt for a 71IBU DIPA. Thanks for the review!

@ummerrahh It's my go to DIPA. They've started selling them here recently in the 12 oz 4- packs, which makes it not such a daunting challenge to crack open a bottle. You can't go wrong with Boulevard beers, especially the Smokestack series.

@StumpyJoeJr It definitely got darker & cloudier when I got to the bottom & poured in the last of it. I like that all of their regular beers & most of the Smokestack Series are bottle conditioned. A worthy IPA.

This is a REALLY nice IPA, probably the best I've ever tasted. I do love the orange taste/smell in this one. Very nice, cheers!

It's a very good beer, as are most of the Boulevard beers, especially the Smokestack series.

Maybe not the best, but one of the best year round IPAs. Boulevard doesn't make a bad beer.
