I just picked ordered one for my 98 polaris sportsman 500 for the front.
Hopefully I have better luck

Initially thought it was necessary to remove sprocket to have better
leverage with pliers getting ring in, but after this last boot change I
will agree with you just so the groove the ring sits in is cleaned well.

lm pretty sure u could do a inner boot without removing the sprocket. good
