WLS Radio Chicago - Dick Biondi Show 1962 Aircheck
Hop aboard the time machine and go back to the late evening of December 4, 1962. Dick Biondi "The Wild Italian" is just starting his 9pm to Midnight show on ...
this is the guy i listened to every possible night...from central arkansas.
he's one of the reasons i wanted to be in radio...leading me to walk into
my local station at age 16 and asking for a job....and then spending the
next FIFTY freakin' years in the business...
Heh, so you want to blame it on Biondi? Yep, I'll bet he's willing to take the rap. I'd have to "blame" my 35+ years in the biz on the RDS "fun devil" mania in Boss Angeles!
WLS Chicago 8/26/67
Enjoy this aircheck of WLS Chicago from August 26th, 1967. Ron Riley behind the mic. Also included is a commercial for the Labor Day Drag Races at ...
Ron Riley was our link to the rock and roll world. Late at night we could
pick it up in north Arkansas and some nights it would fade in and out and
we would have to "fine tune" the radio to hear his show. He was our idol I
guess and so funny and always had something crazy going on, little contests
and such, One time he told about some guys linking rubber bands together
for several blocks in downtown Chicago (trying to break a record?) We would
be glued to the radio! Those were the days!
August of 1967 was when my family got its first dog, and I would have been
starting fifth grade in a couple of weeks. WLS or WCFL would have been on
in the background that entire summer. I've probably even heard everything
on this recording before, but I just don't remember. Those were the great
days of radio in Chicagoland and around the country. Radio nowadays pales
in comparison.
Thanks for posting this air-check, (which would have been lost forever, if
it wasn't
for THE TUBE). It was a more glamorous time for radio, (where radio was
important
and its personalities were loved by their young listeners, even more so, in
some cases, than the vocalists and bands they played on the air).
never heard ron riley but really enjoy all the air checks i run across.
ron ,if that is him on the poster is the spiting image of jeff from rules
of emgagement. does any one agree.
I live between Indianapolis and Louisville and I can safely say that WLS is
a good catch in the entire state of Indiana. WCFL was great at night (there
is an AM station on 1010 south of Indy that stomped on WCFL during the
daytime, but they signed off at sunset).
