+Acam130 I understand your criticism to the "intimidation", but you see, the very first Haka, the traditional "Ka Mate", was born not as an intimidation, but as a prayer towards the Sun God and a motivation not to fear death (you can check the translated lyrics on Wikipedia > https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ka_Mate). The other two versions "acted" by the All Blacks, "Kapa o Pango" and "Timatanga", are more intimidation-like dances, but they're still connected to Maori tradition, thus they're still keep a value of motivational war-dances, besides the intimidation one. Basically, it's supposed to be a pump-up, as the american football pump-ups before matches, but the players don't do it in front of the opponents (of course there are infinite differences between the Haka and normal pump-ups, but I don't want to lose my time by counting them). The fact of playing the Haka in front of the opposite team is just "scenographic", but it shows that the opponents accept the challenge, and I assure you that the All Blacks always show their value on the field (and they actually won that match against Wales). The bad thing, in my opinion, is that the Haka has become just the "All Blacks thingy they do before matches" and is losing its traditional and beautiful meaning because of mass media
+Acam130 Quite right, and I guess I haven't played hockey: I've only played Rugby and hey I'm a Rugby fan so I'm always gonna reckon that's a tough sport aha:) In my opinion I can get the pre-game intimidation, as I have played in Rugby games where I can see my team has lost the game before it has started due to intimidation or pre-game mind games.. Merry Christmas to you too
+Kris Jah That is a matter of opinion. I stick to what I said. You do not need to intimidate the other team with a dance. Intimidate them with your skill and ability to play the game, not by dancing and pounding hands and feet. I am trying to imagine a hockey team doing something like this pre-game, they would probably get laughed out of the stadium. However as I have said before, I totally understand that the Hakka is a part of Kiwi rugby that will never go away. Lets leave it at that. BTW Merry Christmas to you all!
+Acam130 Nobody said Hockey wasn't rough, it clearly is rough yeah: Rugby though is just as rough. The mental side is big in Rugby and the "dance" is just part of that battle. To say "there's no need to intimidate a team before a game" is just not true: what you meant was "they don't do it in Hockey".
+Acam130 Yeah, I played hockey for years... defense. I can still remember coming around behind the net with the puck with my head down and getting fucking crushed. Chipped bones in my elbow... despite elbow pads... Lol. Just one of many but that was a good\bad one. Hahaha. You learn to not skate with your head down that way. Open ice checks, two skaters at full speed... not much compares to that in my opinion.
Yea I don't know what the fuck he's talking about. He probably thinks because you wear equipment in hockey, that you don't feel anything. Try taking an open ice suicide pass and tell me how that feels. Plus hockey players don't make up a dance to try and intimidate the other team (pre-game).
+Chris Hunt Rugby is definitively one of the roughest sports out there. Tough mother f**kers they are. But do a youtube search of greatest hockey hits. My opinion... hockey is just as rough.
+Acam130 Yeah but in fairness Rugby Union is a much more physical game than Hockey. The intimidation beforehand can have a much bigger effect here. Though I accept what you're saying about the main intimidation being in the skill: only New Zealand don't look total mugs when doing their pre-game dance... When Fiji or Samoa etc do it its a little bit flat
+Jash92 Clearly not lol. There's no need to intimidate a team before a game. Intimidate them by showing your skill and ability to win the game on the field. Not yelling and doing some tribal dance.. Pull that shit in a hockey game* and you will be getting a delay of game call. Unfortunately, as you said it is a part of the rugby heritage, so my opinion here is irrelevant.
You don't seem to understand the heritage of both rugby or New Zealand do you?
