My Senior arrived last night. And then I watched this video. I was
instantly worried that I made a bad purchase. I used the Senior for the
first time today. I initially twisted it clockwise and instantly thought
"Crap!" because I felt that same aggressive bite you mentioned in the
video. But when I twisted it counterclockwise there was no bite and it
worked perfectly. I was cleaning a Peterson Aran, Savinelli Tortuga, and a
MM Patriot. And I'm right handed, if that matters. I am now perfectly happy
with this purchase. All of my pipes were flawlessly reamed.
You just sliced a perfectly good (cough cough) pipe in half for the name of
science! I was very interested to see this particular mano a mano between
these two contenders since I use a reamer that has a wholly different
system, not necessarily better. In the end the adjustable reamer seemed to
offer less for the price than the other. Still, any of these beats a clumsy
pocket knife. These accessories do exist for a purpose and I believe any of
them when handled properly may provide good results.
5/32! That briar is hardwood, get down on that reamer! I did a vid using
the Castleford. You can be aggressive with it.I even ride the castleford
bit, smaller bit, up the side as Im twisting to get into the carbon. I keep
a towel to pull off and push on the CF since its kinda sharp. I got back
and forth with the twisting. Neither are a perfect fit for ALL pipe bowls,
but the senior reamer isnt rounded like the CF. U cut it in half!! Jay!!!
Flip! My CF handle hasnt broke, but i cud c it split.
Great video, thanks for sacrificing your pipe for us! I have one of the
castleford reamers (sold under the name Artamis here in the UK) and while
the heads are good, the handle is not. It's pretty cheap plastic and broke
fairly soon. I still use the heads gripped in a pair of pliers or a monkey
wrench, which is actually more comfortable that the original handle. I was
going to buy one of the senior reamers but having seen your experiment,
think I carry on with the one I've got. Cheers, Pete
I like the T handle set the best...that's the one I'd get. But I too, have
heard that it's a good thing to have more cake in the bottom of the bowl. I
always try to pay attention to the ORIGINAL diameter of the bowl (when the
pipe was new) and then use the bit that matches that original diameter of
the bowl. Even if the cake is built up bad, you'll always get it back to
it's original diameter...I use a matching drill bit on my drill press, to
do all my reaming. Just set the depth stop.
Brilliant Jay! That pipe died for a good cause. :) You highlighted one of
my biggest worries when it comes to reames - the issue with the multitude
of different chamber shapes. I know a lot of pipe makers grind their own
spade bits to drill the chamber. It makes for an infinite variety of
shapes. Your test showed clearly that it would be almost impossible to find
a reamer that fit every bowl 100%. The (sad) solution is to have a bunch of
various reamers at hand. Cheers, -Mike
Hey Jay, This is one Great video my friend. Yeah, I hear you when you say
that the reamers scare ya. They scare me also. I put on a pair of latex
gloves and use 80 grit sandpaper to clean my cake walls. The i will move on
to higher grits as the cake gets closer to the side walls of the chamber.
The problem with the reamers is that every pipe maker uses a different
shaped bit for drilling there bowl. Most of us make our own shaped bits.
Thanks for postin Bro!
Really though, I can see being afraid of hurting an expensive pipe,
especially something you paid a few hundred bucks for. But in reality,
it'll take more than you think to gouge through a thick cake into the
briar, or even to crack the briar. Also, if you ever want to repair that
bulldog with the crack, send me a PM. I've repaired a few of my own in the
past, some you'd never even find the crack. I also make pipes too, but
that's a different story...
Come on, just give it some gusto! You're not gonna hurt it! That cake is
hard stuff, you need to be aggressive! I just reamed the bowl on my Kirsten
estate pipe, and you would have been mortified at how I did it, as I wasn't
nice! It had been sitting for 12+ years unsmoked with a ton of cake in it.
A reamer wouldn't cut it, just spun the bowl on the pipe. So, I busted out
the Dremel and a couple burrs. 20 minutes of grinding, and she's good as
new!
Great video. Thanks for doing this. I use the Castleford/T-handle reamer
because of its more conforming shape. However, the smoking chamber on some
pipes are actually more of a tapering conical shape. Which means I have to
use one of the smaller cutter heads for the bottom of the smoking chamber
and step up a size for the top of the smoking chamber. Still I'm happy with
it overall.
Definitely confirmed my suspicions of the senior reamer. I'll pitch the
idea of getting one even as a guy with a penchant for estates. The
castlefords have served me well on every pipe that I've reamed and just
requires that you spend a little more time. Way to take those reamers
through their paces and sacrifice a pipe to science Jay.
