Don't ya just love the sound of those big horns? We've had them here in the
states for like forever. I'm retired now, but when I was in the fire
service, I couldn't wait to grab the lanyard and honk my way down the road.
As a member driving fire apparatus, I always found it harrowing to be following a big engine in my smaller Rescue vehicle because following it through an intersection often got scary and dangerous because after he horn blasted his way through a red light, not all the cars crossing would be expecting another FD vehicle behind it. I tried to get them to install one of those blaster horns on my smaller rescue truck, without success.
Is it like a law or something? copyrighted? That big air horn gets more attention than the truck which followed it with its comparatively piss-weak horn.
+Michael Taylor Mike, you use what works. I've driven apparatus with and without the big blasters. the big blasters, regardless of where they are from, do the trick. It's almost like the public is immune to the traditional siren. Hit'm with the air horn a few times and you've got their attention. I'll take air horns and sirens any time.
+73bubbieThey as in NSWFB and NSW Ambulance Service should use them often because it will get traffic to move because of the strong effect it has in alerting people near by.
WARNING: WALL OF TEXT AHEADAnd I think you calling a particular noise outdated is absurd. A siren that is loud, attracts attention, and projects well is one that does it's job well. Something that does it's job well in current requirements is inherently up-to-date, regardless of the noise or the way it makes it. If it were outdated, we'd have stopped using it, why would the FDNY switch back to Q sirens if they were so outdated then? Why are so many European fire services sticking to their "air" sirens?Furthermore, the Q is not 99% the same as an air raid siren, not only does a mass warning siren have significantly larger parts, they are much flimsier and only meant to be used very, very rarely. A Q has to be used every day for decades without failure or need to be maintained much if at all, not to mention being much smaller and shorter-ranged. They are only similar in that they use air passing over a rotating object to generate noise. Also, trying to end the debate saying that your opinion is the only correct one and that the other person should shut up unless they agree with you is an easy way to lose
+hvymtal i think your over reacting to a siren. If you feel insulted at a fact then you might need to think more about the difference to fact and opinion. The air horn is modern and that's a fact. But the siren is is outdated and is 99% the same as an air raid siren and that's a fact too. If you can't see that then there is no point in continuing another reply
+Saber ToothGaming The only "air raid" thing about the Q is it's long wind up/wind down, the particular way it sounds, and it's superb projection, and air raid sirens sit at the peak of their wail forever before they wind down. It was designed especially for vehicles. And people do not design TVs for toilets or umbrellas for shoes because they serve no useful purpose. Sirens serve a very useful purpose whatever they sound like and however they function. Also, personally, I am rather insulted that I complimented your siren and you dissed mine because it sounds old.
+hvymtal well as sad as it may sound, no matter what anyone thinks of it, it is still an air raid siren mounted on a vehicle. and they went into the trouble of making an electic version because they wanted to, like why would someone design and TV in the toilet, or make umbrellas for shoes, the same reason of because they wanted to.
It was never designed as an "Air raid" siren, it was designed as a road vehicle siren for large emergency vehicles. just because it has a lot of air in the noise does not make it the kind of thing you stick on a pole and turn on once every twenty years. And if it were outdated, then why did Federal Signal go to the trouble of making a fully self-contained electronic replacement that sounds more or less exactly the same AND has a yelp function? If it were truly outdated, they wouldn't have.
either way sirens are designed to get traffic out the road no matter how they sound, but no matter how many people disagree, they are still outdated air raid sirens wither you like the siren or not
Eh, we North Americans like our Q's, they're very effective for getting shit out of your way since drivers here are morons. Just like we like our also "outdated" leather and composite large-brim helmets, custom chassis, and mid-mount pumps. Serious love for the mad max siren though, way better than the sirens they use on apparatus in the UK.
+Saber ToothGaming i agree, Q sirens are sound so outdated. But if America wants to be different, let them be different, its not a good thing being the odd one out in pretty much everything they do county wise
no, hopefully the Q siren stays in the US and west side of the world. The Q siren will make the fire engine sound more like a mobile air raid warning system, not a fire engine.
+stuart morse Actually, we use them in Canada too. Australia should keep their iconic Locktronic "Mad Max" sirens, they have a great sound. Far better than the Q's.

All that research seems to have worked well if they had to install rumblers on them! Have noticed the FRNSW Scania sirens are very quiet compared to CFA's 2x100W Carson models.
Actually the siren is soft due to research showing that a siren starting off soft and building up to being loud is more effective than ba siren starting off loud. Has nothing to do with complaints
First I have heard of this. Please tell more and why?
Over 100 fire fighters battle electrical fire in Sydney CBD
Fire crews throughout Sydney were kept busy today after an electrical fire took hold in the de-commissioned Sydney Water building in Bathurst St, Sydney.
I liked as he was talking about firefighters being decontaminated due to
asbestos, and their gear was placed in hazmat bags, the firie was just
dusting himself off. Regardless....awesome job by the boys and girls.
We are so fortunate to have excellent volunteer fire departments like NSFD !
The public that you protect, appreciates you!
Great work, fellows and gals !

Geez 33 years of sleeping all the time and only getting out of bed for
meals, way to go Kenny, you probably won't remember me ,but, Carolyn G may
shake your memory.
This Australia? The Caltex sounds American and there are dead giveaways
that it is not the UK (that sunshine for a start), but traffic lights with
3 lights on them? And a fire engine that looks like one of ours here in
the UK?... It's like a confusing mash-up of British and American making me
think that it's Australian.
That women saved your life! You should have been 12 miles away--industry
standard for gas station fires. She's a smart cookie, knows her stuff. And
she was so calm and collected in the face of such danger! A real
professional.
lol, 12 miles. it was fuel tanker not a core meltdown.

+Chris mckeithen I've seen cabin crew position themselves at the bottom to make sure no one bangs their head coming off the chute, especially mothers with children.
+dviantre german What does the time it took the fire department to arrive to the plane have to do with passengers going down the emergency slide with belongings? Absolutely nothing.
