Only now with the release of MGSV, the hype around it and seeing what a let down it is narratively have I open my eyes to the real world of Metal Gear :( Thanks to someone posting an article about MGS4, I learnt all the horrible facts that are going on behind the scenes with Kojmia and his creation :'( My only question now, after all the shit he as been through, with wanting to end the series (with MGS2!!!!! and then going through 3 and the sabotage of 4) ... How on earth did he end up agreeing to making the 'V' instalment!?!?!??!?! (Also its so clear now why he and Konami have parted ways)

+TheTritoneTerror Aside from intentional 4th-wall breaking (look up the playwright Bertol Brecht, who intentionally de-immersed people to bring his point home)...The 'digital entering the real world' effect is a visual motif taken from the excellent animated film 'Ghost in the Shell'. The themes of that film are similar to MGS2, and it is well worth a watch. Not sure why Shinkawa (lead artist) chose to recall the motifs so explicitly, but the influence of Ghost in the Shell is certainly undeniable. A great film regardless of what you thought of MGS2, give it a go!

+John Doe Can you explain something for me? What was with the VR footsteps after Raiden got captured? I can only think of 3 explanations: 1) Hallucinations caused by GW's AI interacting with Raiden's nanomachines 2) Everything after that point (and possibly before) was all VR 3) Kojima is messing with us and that was a wink wink breaking of the 4th wall with no in-game explanation.

This whole thing you've done here, this series... This is really great work! If you look at the respect and thought educational systems pay to authors and creative minds of the past, looking into the authors reasoning and messages - this is what you've done here, and it's excellently done. You should endeavour to get into games design classes - from a theory teaching perspective or what have you? Being able to discuss these story telling aspects and authors motivations is really important. Personally I only completed mgs2 a few hours ago, and plan to play through the series, and while I consider myself an overthinker, I still wouldn't have looked at Komijas reasoning, motivations nor appreciated the characters and story quite so much without your insights and information. What these videos are telling me, is that Kojima is worthy of more praise as a creator than I thought. If his depth of thought into his game design is really so vast, then wow, thats incredible. And the fact his efforts are so overlooked is a real shame.... of course most people are stupid. But still... the reason I came back to the series now at 30, after failing to grasp mgs1 as a 13-14 yr old - is because I wasn't ready then, like most people I just wanted to have simple fun, now I do want to properly appreciate the messages that are being projected. - And so again, thank you for your insights. (Many games I play for the gameplay; AC, beat em ups etc... but some games mgs, halo, mass effect, are games for the stories. And in terms of appreciating the art form and the creators behind them.... it's fascinating to note how nuanced Hideos games are when compared to the norm - and it's a shame more people don't see or appreciate that quality of work)

You can totally skip that game and just watch the third video (to see how it got everything wrong.)And yeah, Kojima definitely is one of a kind. Sadly, I think the Metal Gear canon has been holding him back, and MGSV is proof of that (because of how "meh" the story is.) I really like raiden in MGS2. I felt just like Raiden I can choose my own path. As the middle child this spoke to me I get to choose my own future and I've had I had a rough time in college but I'm almost done with it and I got to choose my major and hopefully soon when i graduate my own future that will lead me to a path that will make me happy.

Of for fuck's sake, in MGS 2 Rose literally managed to be even more annoying than Raiden, even Akiba in MGS4 is easier to tolerate than her. She's a vapid self-centered bitch who does nothing but to badger Raiden through Codec all the time, interrupting him on his mission to ask what day it is and trying to discuss their relationship.

Great series.. I swear, MGS4 really never needed to happen, those unanswered questions and ambiguous ending to MGS2 I think was exactly what Kojima wanted and that's why he moved right away to prequel territory to tell the story of Big Boss. MGS4 was a bloated mess trying to tie up 'loose ends' that were never meant to be tied. Anyways, great series and great video

+Solid Kenny I see what you mean about the other games, but even then Snake or Raiden still had to complete certain tasks for things to have progressed, whether it was good or bad, intended or unintended. The PAL keys, killing The Boss, etc etc. But in MGS4, quite literally everything would have ended exactly the same if it started right at Act 5, except for rescuing Naomi. Nothing else really contributed to the outcome except for unneeded exposition about those awesome existential questions from MGS2 that I think Kojima really didn't want to have 'answered'... Personally I think turning Zero into the big-bad along with your happy-go-lucky support crew from Snake Eater was lame, same with the Patriots being only AI and not actual men pulling the strings. But that's me! I loved the ambiguity!Anyway always fun to talk to a true MGS fan!

+dece74 Well to be fair, undermining the player's accomplishments is a series staple. In MGS1, the whole world could've avoided a nuclear threat if Solid Snake sat on his ass, instead of being duped into activating the PAL keys. In MGS2... well, that's what the first Rose video was about. lol. In MGS3, The Boss was the real star of the show; Naked Snake was just a pawn used for The Boss to accomplish her mission (ie death.) PW kinda bucks the trend, but even then, all of the player's hard work into building up Mother Base gets shit upon when Skull Face manipulates Big Boss into a trojan horse scheme (and of course, there's the dramatic irony that, despite how heroic "Vic Boss" is in PW, he ultimately becomes a horrible warmonger.)The thing I love most about Itoh's novelization is how well Itoh understood/portrayed the nuance of Kojima's themes and message. The way he describes each character is filled with love and respect (as opposed to Raymond Benson, who had Snake, in reply to Otacon's "Sniper Wolf likes dogs, she must be a good person!", say "HITLER LIKED DOGS TOO.")Also, the book completely leaves out the B&Bs, which makes the story waaaay less cheesy.

+Solid Kenny Nice, I'll have to check that out! One of the big problems to me is that with the one exception of rescuing Naomi, Snake does nothing of any significance during the entire game. Literally, the game could start in Act 5 on the ship deck and everything would still be exactly the same.

He was put into the power role that players want (either Snake or Ninja) because people desire it. You don't stop to think how blatant they are as long as they support your point, even if they're not intended in that way. Yes, he's in a power place, yes he's meant to be perceived positively now so that people will watch his path. Neither of those things is innately wrong, and I swear this assumption that it is and talking of it negatively is extremely short sighted and poorly thought out. Your blind defense of the relationship they have when it's a 2 dimensional partnership meant only to serve the narrative shows more than you mean to reveal about yourself to anyone with a mild psychology background, yet you're so self-unaware that you can't stop to see how Kojima used him in the power fantasy role and just bash it in passing.
