I have decided if this medication stops working, I will most certainly ask for shock. It IS worth It to me, and most of my memories are so painful and hellish, I hope that I do have memory loss. Good riddance!
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Heather Sage I'm sorry to tell you but my understanding after my first meeting with a doctor is that the memory loss probably won't affect long term memory ... it would most likely affect the general time when you are having the treatments - and most of it will come back to you over time. No guarantees of course and every case is different but that is how it was explained to me 3 days ago by a doctor.

My wife has been in hospital since 11 May 2015. she has been diagnosed with anti psychotic behavior and was treated for it with anti-depression medication. That didn't work and now on 14 August 2015 she is having her 4th ECT treatment (scheduled for 6). I hope and believe that I made the right decision to let my wife have this treatments. She will come back to me, just believe.

+Pieter De Beer I feel so sorry for you and for your wife, I have a cousin who is suffering from depression, and doctors have told him that they want him to try this shock therapy, I have told him not to go ahead, but what do you say, how was the experience of ECT with your wife, do you recommend my cousin to go ahead, or would tell him that it is not a good idea? what do you say.

Latest feedback is that my wife has been released. Final diagnoses is "Unspesified mental disorder due to brain damage and disfunction" 1 Military Hospital say they can do nothing for my wife anymore. She is at home and I am taking care of her, like I should.I must also still work and provide for the family.

I'm living depression, I'm not being treated. I'm 16, my parents don't believe I'm depressed. I want to get help someday but I probably won't do shock.

+MuzicLoverForever Keep talking to school counselors or find a local clinic that will talk to you or call suicide prevention lines ... even if you are not suicidal. They are there to listen ... eventually you'll find someone who "gets it" and will take action to get you the help you need.As for "shock therapy," there are many, many other options for you to try before anyone would suggest ECT.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-GLhF8NQdAt8/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAABk/Gf4itXNKGYA/photo.jpg?sz=64
Adam Beck, it nice to see someone understands. Its really for me to get help. The reason for this is I tried to before. In 9th grade when I was 15 I told my school psychologist I had thoughts of hurting myself, seance it was the second time I seen her for that reason she called my mom. Then I was told I was lying and I was grounded for two weeks, then I moved schools.I told my mom the truth but she wouldn't believe the truth so eventually I lied I said I didn't feel anymore because I knew that's what she wanted to hear, she wasn't going to do anything about my depression. I have more things forward to now and more distractions from my thoughts but I still feel really bad and cry a lot. My family thinks depression is fake. I've felt this way sence 14 but I was to scared to say anything then. I don't have a phone so I cant really call anyone. There counseling center at my school I go to now but I just don't have a way to fit going there into my schedule without missing to much class. I'm allow to go but do to my disability I always fall behind in class so leaving for counseling would probably drop my grades more and I'd still be in trouble with my mom. She expects me to be prefect. I don't hate school, I hate that I cant grasp things as well as other kids and I'm getting shit for it.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
I know what you mean I was like that at 16 .. if your parents don't believe you find a counselor yourself to talk to .. or tell your family doctor .. there are kids help lines and stuff to speak to people .. you're very overwhelmed at a young age these days always having to keep up with trends and other kids when I left school it was the best thing cause then I was my own person again .. Depression is only a symptom it can be treated you are to young for this .. I was told if I started dating it would help with my depression but im to depressed to do that lol

Depression is terrible, especially in the Asian community. A lot of "traditional" Asians think it's all in your head but the truth is there – it actually affects people. Whether it be from losing a loved one or because of life's stresses, depression is a real thing and it's great that videos like this exist. Things do happen for a reason. I left medical school to pursue music and here I am, doing what I love and traveling the world. Even though it doesn't really give me the six figure income my parents hoped I would have, I am always smiling and living life to its fullest. Best wishes to you.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-bfuWP44hrkY/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAbk/9HBJGDiQmNo/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Richard Kim Exactly, sometimes we all need to go through something like that to get to where we want in life. I'm glad this whole experience sparked you to pursue your dreams. The internet can do a lot for what you want and you hopped right onto the right train to get there Richard. At the end of the day, just remember that the only person that will be there for you is YOU at the end of the day. Some may never understand your passion, but I promise you there's gonna be others who appreciate your passion. Keep your head up my friend! If you ever need to talk feel free to email me.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-s-1JKMuwCEM/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAno/g6IX6aPR6-Q/photo.jpg?sz=64
Yup. I realized that money isn't everything when I went to college. So many people were chasing their dreams and I was sitting in my room studying biology and chemistry. My first year was miserable. I'm glad I did what I did.Life is about pursuing what you love and desire, not about making others happy at the expense of your own.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-bfuWP44hrkY/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAbk/9HBJGDiQmNo/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Richard Kim Wow, your story is so inspiring Richard.. and this is the reason why I'm starting YouTube. I don't see many people talking about life too much. That's awesome, I'm so happy for you that you decided to pursue your dreams instead of doing what others want you to. Asian parents expect their children to make money instead of being passionate. I believe that no matter how much money you may make.. it won't ever add up to happiness. Be passionate about what you do in life because in the long run you live your life. Your parents will not always be there, so do it for you. Thank you so much for responding to my video Richard it means a lot!! I'm going to check out your channel now. :)

I had to beg for ECT in my mid-twenties. My psychiatrist wanted to reserve it only for older people. I was suffering terribly though and convinced him to give it a shot. It worked. My memory loss was small and limited to the course of treatment. I didn't forget anything momentous - just a television show or movie I'd seen. I'm 40 now and having another go at it. I encourage anyone contemplating this to research their medical team. I had a bad experience at one hospital and am having a good experience at another. The worst thing that happened was a sort of triggering of my fight or flight response. I was in that mode for five days before a dose of Haldol put an end to it. Klonopin, Xanax, even Benadryl had no effect. That was with the first team and I've not gone back to them. I've had three treatments with my new doctor and while I haven't noticed a change for the better, my side-effects have been minimal. Even using bilateral ECT (known to cause greater memory loss than right unilateral) I'm not forgetting near as much as I did from that first hospital. I think the practice of ECT might be as much an art as a science. That's the only way I can explain the different results I've had from different doctors.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-qJFQaL0Oalw/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAALaY/kJAQzMYPNr8/photo.jpg?sz=64
+peter piper Peter, after having countless treatments, even with the team from Princeton, I saw no improvement. In the past, it did work for me. This time I fear I've lost memories of nearly a year of my four year old's life. That's the worst of it. I'm still having difficulty making new memories and an continually shocked at how much I've lost. From November 2013 to April 2014 I had treatments three times a week, nearly every week. I don't know why it didn't help when it did in the past. However, I am now on hormone therapy and my psychiatrist did some DNA testing to find out what sort of medication I'm most likely to respond to. I'm semi-functional now, though one day of activity usually requires a day of rest and recovery. I've also had myself tested for food allergies. I mention this because I came back with 23 distinct sensitivities of varying degrees, which indicates I may have what they call Leaky Gut. You can Google that for the icky details, but it causes chronic inflammation which can be a major factor in depression. As you can see, I've started looking at the functioning of my whole body rather than relying solely on psychiatry. And, I'm pleased to say, this has been not only with the approval of my psychiatrist, but with her urging. I've never had a doctor like her. For psych meds I'm on Brintellix and Wellbutrin, along with Klonopin and Xanax. The genetic testing told her that I'm less likely to respond to traditional SSRIs. If you've started ECT and find it's helping, please let me know. If not, please don't view this as a cautionary tale. It's just my story. I still think ECT can be very helpful, particularly at lifting a person out of the depths where life seems more troublesome than death. I also think it's worthwhile to look at other possible contributors to depression. We make as much serotonin in our guts as we do in our brains. If that system is faulty or out of balance, it can have a huge impact on mental state. With regard to hormones, I happened to have nearly no progesterone or testosterone. Women need testosterone too. Oxytocin is another hormone that can have a huge impact on mood in both men and women. A primary care doc can order blood tests to see if your levels are good. Oh! And thyroid. Jeez, we're really complicated organisms, aren't we? I hope you are feeling better. I also hope I've been somewhat helpful. I've been dealing with this my whole life. I'm 41. That's a big number! Anyway, I hope I don't sound preachy or anything. I'm just sharing my experience with the hope that it may, somehow, be helpful. Even if all you take from it is the knowledge that I care enough to share.Be Well.

I agree with you that the facility and the physicians really matter. I'm lucky enough to live by a great hospital with an award-winning psychology program, so my experience was pretty great.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
Please tell me then, your saying that it's up to the experience of the administers as to how good the treatment is? That's a scary thought in itself... I'm hoping this finds you in good health. I'm considering having ECT for chronic depression and hope you can shed anything that may help me in working out if it's for me as I'm running out of options fast. Thanks Meredith!

Douglas, thank you for sharing your perspectives around ECT. I'm at a crossroads with treatment for MDD. While I've never been catatonic the last three years have been pure hell for me and my psychiatrist, while not saying that we've tried all medications, is asking me to again consider ECT. I am unable to work, spend nearly the entire day, every day in bed sleeping, and am losing hope that medications will pull me out of this paralyzingly abyss. I live a life consisting of waiting to see if the fog will lift tomorrow hoping maybe life will have color and meaning again and I can rebuild my life that at 51 is financially in shambles as a result of my health. Your observation regarding side effects from treatment and the alternative may have finally convinced me that my concerns over memory loss should no longer stop me from accepting this treatment. Afterall, I know what quality of life I'm stuck with if I do nothing. Thanks again. I'm closer than ever to accepting ECT.

+Auto Insider Thanks. Feel free to keep me posted on your decision. Evidently there are two ways to administer ECT--bilateral and unilateral. If you want, I could ask my clients which type they received. You can ask your doctor what he thinks of the difference.  Here is one study that I found. //psycnet.apa.org/psycinfo/1983-26048-001

Another good video, Douglas. I am a recovering addict and recovering depressive who was a member of one of your earliest depression groups, and found them quite helpful. I've also been a recipient of ECT, as you may recall. However, my "shock treatments" were way back in 1972, when the 'current' was much higher, as I understand. As such, they did give me significant memory loss -- large gaps in my memory which actually exist to this day. Similar to your mother's story, I had been practically catatonic during the daytime, then filled with terrorizing thoughts at night to a point where I couldn't sleep, or would wear myself out from anxiety to the point of exhaustion. As you state in your video, ECT was a last resort for me. Antidepressants and talk therapy hadn't worked, although this was before the advent of SSRI's, the modern day anti-depressant. I had a series of 7 shock treatments over a 17 day period, and was slated for 3 more. However, a severe panic attack prompted me to call my parents and have them get me out of the facility I was residing in (it was a lock-down psych ward at Holladay Park Hospital in Portland, which has since shut down). Anyway, I'm not sure what the difference in "voltage" is between 1972 and now, but I hope they've lowered it, as your video suggests, and as I've heard they have. As I like to share, the ECT I had back then did nothing for my depression, but I can now jump-start your car. A little shock therapy humor, if you will. Take care, my friend, and thank you for your instructive and articulate videos. Gary :)

+Gary Swoboda Great sharing Gary. ECT today is certainly much "gentler" than it was in  1972. I am glad you found your way to recovery by other means. As an attendee of AA, I think you will also appreciate my video "Recovering From Depression, One Day at a Time."

Thank you for bringing ECT out in the open. The stigma is so damaging by those who know nothing about what it is. I felt the same way as you; I had the choice to try ECT or live in hell. I thought the memory loss was a bargain if it worked. I have severe was memory loss or no sense of joy in all areas of my life. I describe it as the most painful time in my life and felt I had no other choice. My memory loss is severe and it did not help at all. I would never suggest not trying it as I met many who see the treatment as a blessing, because of the relief of such painful living is so painful, no one understands unless they've gone through it. Doctors with many degrees do not understand. I do get lost going home and to family homes who lived there 30 years. I can relate to the new movie about early Alzheimer disease called, Where's Alice, (I think) with that beautiful red haired actress (I cannot remember her name). She's phenomenal in this film. I could go on for ever about my experience but eventually, I finally found medication that has given me my life back, however, it is not usually prescribed for depression and it's not FDA approved for it as of yet, however I am hopeful for those who have doctors who wouldn't prescribe it for depression or even know that it has helped thousands to get the word out. I was hopeless and was approved because it seemed as there was no other alternative for me, as I was certainly a good candidate as I fought my deep sadness for years, which became debilitating and hopelessness took control of my life. Most try anything available for a long time before ECT seems as if it is the last and only choice. Good Health and if you need to ask me anything related I would be honored to help someone who is suffering with this awful illness. Be Well! XO

Hi Pam. I was wondering what the medication you found was? I've been doing ect and just trying to find anything to help. Meds have not worked for me so far for a bunch of years.

Thanks for posting, Jenny! Can you explain a little on what it was like to get put to sleep? Like how did they do it, what do you remember, what did it feel like, could you have fought it if you would have tried, etc. This is the part that freaks me out the most. Thanks!

+Jenny's ECT Diary Thank so much for answering! So you said it stings your arm when it goes in? Is it bad? Or just a little painful? And so like overwhelming sleepiness? So absolutely no way you could have stayed awake if you would have tried? I've also heard it feels like you blink and then you're awake again. Thanks again for posting these videos, they're very informative.

+xcalabur18 What happens to me when I am receiving the anesthetic is I start to feel sleepy and if my eyes are open, my vision will blur and slowly go black from the outside in. If that sounds scary then I highly recommend closing your eyes beforehand. I also hear a quiet ringing in my ears. I tried fighting it a couple of times but it didn't really work haha. This was on the top of my list of scariest things about ECT before I started. I want to encourage you and tell you that it's really just fine and once you do it a couple of times, it just becomes routine. I hope this helps! Best wishes to you!

I experienced a more severe memory loss, even though I had only one course of ECT (but bilateral and pretty strong). Initially, I did actually forget people, but nobody very close to me or whom I'd known for a long time. I learned pretty quickly how to save face when the forgotten people would walk up to me and start talking. Anyway, I was wondering if you've had any déjà vu experiences, and if you've figured out how you tell them apart from "returning" memories or just déjà vu. Obviously, asking people involved helps, but it becomes embarrassing after awhile...

+Show and Tell Yes I have! I think most of them are just returning memories but I'm not really sure how to tell the difference. I usually ask people as well. I'm sorry to hear that the memory loss was more severe. I hope you are doing better now.

I had a similar memory experience. Very little memory loss the first go-round. I noticed it the most w movies/TV shows that I watched during treatment. Several times I mentioned to my husband that I wanted to see a certain movie and he told me we had watched it together. It was scary but as far as I know that's the only memory that was gone. It was def worse the second go-round. Much more noticeable but the same types of things. Also, would I do it again? Yes. Yes. Yes. ECT changed my life so much for the better.

Thank you so so much for sharing. I know it's a difficult topic to discuss and invites a barrage of opinions, most uneducated and also mostly negative. I will begin ECT in 3 days and while I'm terrified (who wouldn't be) your courage in sharing your experience offers me hope.

+Laura Bevans Thank you so much for your kind words. I remember how scared I was right before I started ECT. I want to send you so much encouragement and tell you how brave you are in choosing to go through with the treatment. It's such a huge step, especially for those of us who struggle with motivation. I would love to get updates from you if you are able. Best wishes to you my dear <3

"Bilateral" is actually perfectly acceptable :) love your videos, my best friend is going through ECT treatments so this is really inspiring to watch!

+Jenny's ECT Diary She's responding really well, actually. :) It makes me so happy because she has been suffering for literally as long as I have known her, which will be ten years come June. It's not without bumps in the road but the benefits are clearly outweighing the risks for her!

+Cat The Marauder haha yeah a few people have said that. My doctors always refer to it as bitemporal and that's how I've always seen it so that's why I corrected myself. Thank you so much for your kind words, it means so much. How is your friend doing with the treatments?
