4:45 I agree 100% I was in the market for a new car and considered the Jaguar F-type, but no manual gearbox so they lost the sale. If they want to make the car fun for younger buyers, why put grandma's automatic in it?
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Adil BaigI've been driving cars with manual transmissions for 30 years.  You're assuming that because I don't need to flaunt the fact that I can drive a stick, that I am incapable of driving a stick.  You would be incorrect.I've simply grown past the point where I need to prove that I can drive a stick.  Something I encourage everyone to do.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Adil BaigGiven the brains of the gear-selection algorithm in the ZF 8-speed transmission...  There's no conceivable scenario where a human could select the right gear faster than the automatic mode in the transmission itself.  For example, if necessary, it can drop from 8th gear to 2nd in a single 200ms shift.Given the torque of modern Jaguar engines...  there's no reason to have to jump gears like back in the day when engines (especially the turbocharged variety) had such a narrow power-band.Plus, have you ever thought about how tricky it would be to accurately select the desired forward geat out of eight possibilities using a traditional shift lever?  I wonder how many people "wrong-slot" the shift lever on their Corvette or Porsche 911 with the 7-speed manual - try going from 7th to 3rd in a Porsche 911 ten time in a row without screwing it up.Like I said before...  Today, manual transmissions are an affectation - like a handlebar mustache or someone who wears their pants hanging down past their ass.

+Jonathan Gwynne driving an automatic transmission exactly mean you are a lesser driver cause your mind is not yet trained to co-ordinate gear changes, do aggresive cornering, maintain high speed and watch out for danger at the same time. I am not saying an Auto vs manual of same model will give a lap time difference of 4 second.. naa.. but YES, for sure it will give you a different of 0.5 or 1 sec.and that on track means life and death.you under estimate capacity of human intuition and adaptiveness once a car is learnt.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-jSRm6cZe-5Y/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAB4Q/RQKdxgOESVc/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Jonathan Gwynne well the true shifting dont exist in paddle shift. You cannot down shift from your 8th to 3th right away if you need it on some aggressive corner or accidental situation. its always shifting it down 5 times to come to 3rd. and a real stick driver (and i mean a real driver who knows how to efficiently manage the perfect power-band torque at given speed, not just someone who can use clutch pedals and shift up and down normally) can always outshine any shifting algorithm of any automatics boxes out there.yes there is a fraction of second of shift lag in manual due to clutching but that can be overcomed right away by being in the sweet spot of torque band and acceleration yourself off that grandma's automatic.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Jonathan Gwynne As I said if I were in the market for a new car now I'd seriously consider the Cayman GT4/GTS over another 911.  After driving the 2 back to back my main problem with the Cayman S is lack of power going up steep hills.  The 2 trunks are extremely practical and allows for a lot of storage for long trips (something the Audi R8 I looked at didn't have).  I'd also seriously consider the Lotus as they're very light, fun cars.  If I were Jay Leno and could have a huge garage with my favorite cars I'd buy one right now.For the millionth time, I know there are electronic nannies there in the 911 and I understand how they work, but I don't feel them when I'm driving so it's not an issue.  Can you explain how you're upset about electronic gadgets getting in the way as you're operating a pedal or wheel, but not being upset about having the pedal or wheel taken away entirely and having the function completely replaced by a computer doing what you used to do as part of driving?  No one gets in the car to enjoy manually rolling the windows, but people do get into a sports car to operate the 3 pedals and the wheel.  I don't want a new version of ACC that will sense cars and figure out where you want to turn and brake for you to the point they just get rid of the brake pedal.  The clutch pedal and the feel of using it with the gearshift that lets you pick the exact gear is a huge part of driving pleasure.  I don't want it taken away from me. What's your problem with FWD?  I know on the track or under heavy speeds it leads to understeer, but for tooling around town under 40 mph I'd take the FWD with all my pedals over a RWD without one in a minute.  Just sitting there as the car shift is annoying and boring and the paddles are a joke.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+maxpowers3732You say you understand what goes on behind the scenes but then you go and make comments that prove you don't - like trying to claim that electronic driver-aids aren't computers getting between the driver and the car when that is precisely what they do.Snooty remarks about the Cayman S?  No.  It is a fine car.  Better than the 911, actually.  In fact, the main reason Porsche still sells 911s is because they won't put their more powerful engines in the Cayman/Boxter.  If they did, nobody in their right minds would buy a 911.  I test-drove a Boxter recently and it is a much better car dynamically than the 911.  Plus, the design is genius...  two storage compartments - front and rear?  Very clever.  The only real beef I had was the cartoonishly large steering-wheel.  It felt like I was driving a delivery van.You keep dragging up this nonsense about stick-shift cars being "more fun to drive".  It is nonsense.  The idea that the Alfa 4C is less of a sports car or less fun to drive because it doesn't have a clutch-pedal is ridiculous.I haven't driven one yet but everyone I've talked to who has (and who has also driven an Elise) says the same thing - it is an Italian Elise but with more low-down torque and easier to get in and out of.FWD is the antithesis of driving enjoyment.  For you to say otherwise just goes to show that you don't really understand anything about driving enjoyment. You're seriously saying that if you had to choose between a FWD car with a clutch pedal and a RWD car without one...  that you'd take the FWD car?  Seriously?
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Jonathan Gwynne I understand exactly what's happening behind the scenes and did a lot of research of research before buying the car.  Any snooty comments about the Cayman S or GT4?  I understand how the electric steering works and I don't care since I'm turning the steering wheel and I get the feedback from the road I want.  I'm not stupid enough to fall for the PDK being like a manual because of the design with 2 clutches as you put it in "D" or flap away at paddles. The Alfa 4C wasn't out yet when I was looking for cars and it doesn't have a manual, so it wouldn't be fun to drive and isn't a real sports car.  The Lotus was a possibility that I seriously looked at, but I ended up with the 911 instead since I had such a great experience with the Cayman and there's no Lotus dealers near me so test driving one would have been difficult.  That would be another possibility when I look at getting a new car.I'm not driving these cars at the limit on a track everyday.  For most part I'm driving for errands and when I get a chance for fun I drive on twisty mountain roads or the expressway.  For driving around town under 40 mph the FWD car is great.  Above 40 it starts to be a problem
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+maxpowers3732You think you drive by turning the steering wheel and stepping on the throttle/break pedal but, in reality you don't.  Part of the problem is that not only do you not care what happens "behind the scenes" but you don't understand it either (not unusual for 911 owners).  If you did, you'd know that you literally have no direct control over your car.  That there is nothing but computer control between you and the road - especially in a Porsche 911.If you wanted a real sports car you'd have gotten an Alfa 4C or a Lotus Evora.  Or, if you were really serious, you could import a TVR Griffith - though you'd have to learn how to shift with your left hand.Instead your have your car-as-fashion-accessory 911 and you're well-suited to it.As for having fun driving a FWD car....  You must be joking.  Do you know anything about automotive dynamics?
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Jonathan Gwynne Want to know when you lost all credibility?  When you couldn't figure out that I don't care what happens behind the scenes.  I'm in my early 30s, a little early for midlife crisis.  My car is dark blue, not red.  I steer by turning the steering wheel, brake by pushing the brake pedal, accelerate by pushing the gas pedal, and shift by using the clutch and gearshift.  Hence I have direct control.  I would prefer not having electric steering, but it's not a deal killer.  When I accelerate on an on ramp and shift near redline in 2nd right into 5th or another high gear I'm very happy I'm not flipping paddles or having the "skill" of putting the car in "D" and mashing the gas pedal.  Same thing when I downshift past multiple gears.  No SMG/Tiptronic/PDK/Command shift/automatic marketing gimmick of the month deciding for me.I actually agree with that sports cars should be light and also have a 1st generation Cayman S( 6 speed manual of course) that's lighter and has many attributes I prefer over the 911.  The worst part of the 911 is the "upshift indicator" that I interpret to mean to accelerate more.  I would have bought a new Cayman instead of the 911, but wanted to try something new.  Right now it's looking like I'll get a Cayman GT4 or GTS when it's time to replace the current Cayman.  My brother's car is a 97 Ford that doesn't have ABS and is front wheel drive that I absolutely love driving and I don't care that it doesn't have ABS or all the current day nannys.  Like you said, it's nearly impossible to find a current day car that doesn't have the nannies installed.  I drove 3 sports cars with DCT multiple times around the track and when I finished I was excited about getting back in my manual.  My loaner car was also a car with a DCT that I drove for a couple days and couldn't wait to get rid of that boring automatic.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+maxpowers3732In case you were wondering when it was that you lost all credibility in ranting against computer control of cars, it was when you said you were happy with your Porsche 911 - one of the most electronic-nanny-infested cars on the market today - short of the Nissan GTR or Mitsubishi Evo.  There is a reason why the 911 is the stereotypical "midlife-crisis" car of choice for overweight, middle-aged men with more money than driving skill - because it requires zero skill to drive - particularly the latest generation, the 991 with its electronic steering. The steering wheel has basically become an electronic controller rather than a connection to the front wheels.  You can't seriously complain about the loss of direct control over a car and drive a Porsche 991.The 911 isn't a light enough to be considered a proper sports-car.  A sports car is, first and foremost, lightweight.  The porky Porsche with its curb-weight of more than 3,000 pounds scarcely qualifies.  A Mazda Miata is more of a "sports car" than Porsche 911.  It certainly has a better pedigree.  The Porsche 911 is originally descended from the Volkswagen Beetle by way of the 356.  The Miata is the spiritual descendent of the original Lotus Elan. But if you want something a little more exclusive, there's the Alfa Romeo 4C - basically the Italian attempt at a Lotus Elise.  It has nearly the same power:weight ratio as the current 991s but nowehere near the level of electronic nannies.  At more than a thousand pounds lighter than the Porsche, it is proper sports car.Second of all, your assertion that ABS or ESC doesn't  "kick in" while you're driving or doesn't affect your inputs is flatly wrong.  And in a car with the dynamic shortcomings of the 991, computer control will override your inputs earlier and more often. It is difficult to find a modern vehicle with a worse polar moment of inertia than the 991 - maybe the W12 versions of the Bentley Continental GT.  That's one of the reasons why the Boxter is more of a driver's car than the 991.  Though, to be fair, the new transaxle design of the new 991 is a slight improvement over the outgoing 997.  Still, the underlying problem of putting the engine outside the wheelbase has never been addressed in the 911.Third, don't go mistaking the ability to shift gears with a stick and clutch for "driving skill".When you've driven a TVR Griffith 500 (or a Tuscan) on wet British B-roads at the limit - as I have done...  THEN you can talk to me about my skills.  When you four-wheel-drift a Jaguar XJR through a turn without missing the apex...  THEN you can talk to me about my skills. In the meantime, go back to your midlife-crisis-mobile.  Let me guess...  is it red?  German cars shouldn't be red.  Red is an Italian color.  German cars should be a neutral color like silver, black or grey.  British cars should be dark green, French cars should be blue.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Jonathan Gwynne You keep failing to understand that driving a sports car isn't something for a robot or an activity to generate numbers for a spreadsheet.  It's a fun, emotional, engaging experience.  To say a technology is "better" because it's faster at 0-60 or generating numbers on a track is to miss the whole point.  "Modern" automatics shift faster, but don't give you any more control.  You're still stuck shifting sequentially with an automatic, just like with the old "modern" automatics given cool sounding names by marketing make you feel better about not being able to drive a real manual.  It's not an automatic, it's a sequential manual gearbox or it's a Tiptronic, or an R-tronic, etc.You also don't seem to grasp that I don't care what's happening behind the scenes or if there is some computer assist when things go wrong.  You really can't tell the difference when you're driving between having ABS so your steering doesn't lock up when you're hard on the brakes and taking away the brake pedal completely and having automatic braking?  That's the equivalent of the DCT or any automatic.  It's not computer assisted.  The entire fun of doing the action is replaced by a computer.  I don't care if my tennis racket has strings that grip the ball better to generate more spin.  I would care if it's more efficient to push a button and have a computer swing the racket without my skill having an impact on the result.  When I'm enjoying driving my sports cars it doesn't matter if they have ABS, traction control, ESC, etc since those systems don't kick in while I'm driving or affect my inputs.  Removing the steering wheel and replacing it with computer sensors that steer for me would ruin my driving enjoyment.  It's the same thing with removing by gearshift and replacing it with something that selects gears for me without any input.  The annoying paddles only let you shift sequentially and are not enjoyable.  Most reviewers and people I've talked to never touch the paddles.I'm perfectly happy with my new 991 Porsche 911 S.  I didn't buy the car to show off and I don't particularly care if people see the stick or not or what other people think.  Will you go out and buy a car that replaces your judgement and driving with a computer program doing all the thinking for you?  Will you be 1st in line to buy a self driving car? I'd suggest reading the article "Ghosts in the Machines" by John Phillips in the Februrary 2015 Car and Driver.  The main quote "As our skills degrade, more automation accrues at the expense of further human performance".  Sounds like your skills have degraded quite a bit if you want more and more automation.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+maxpowers3732You keep failing to grasp that modern automatic transmissions give the driver more control over gear-selection than manual transmissions do.  But it isn't really "control" you want.  You want people to see that stick shift and say "Ooooh, he drives a stick...  he must know about cars!"You talk about wanting to be "in control" while driving?  Good luck finding the sorts of direct connections you describe in any modern car.  The fact is, you're talking nonsense. All modern cars have ABS - that's you giving control over your brakes to a computer. Most modern cars have ESC - that's you giving control over your brakes, steering and throttle to a computer. Many modern sports cars have traction-control - that's you giving control over the throttle to a computer. Many modern sports cars use a drive-by wire throttle - there's literally no direct connection between the throttle and the engine.  Your right-foor operates a controller that is read by a computer and translates motion into a throttle position which is controlled by a computer.Infiniti has actually introduced steer-by-wire - in some of the new Q50 models, the steering wheel isn't direct connected to the steering rack - the wheel is simply a controller that tells a computer where the driver wants to point the car. Many other cars have given up hydraulic steering-assist for the electronic kind.  This is better for fuel-economy but lousy for steering feedback because even though there is still a rudimentary connection between driver and steering-rack, it is controlled by computer.  More lack of control. If you really want the sort of car you describe then prove it by going to the UK and buying a 1990s-era TVR Griffith 500.  Though I doubt you could handle that car.  350bhp and 360 lb/ft of torque in a car that's roughly the size of a contemporary Corvette but weighs more than 1,000 lbs less.  No electronic driver-aids of any kind.  Not even power steering in the earlier models.  I've driven them and they are great cars but definitely not for people like you.The closest thing to the sort of car you describe that is available in the US today would be a used Lotus Elise.  No power steering, only rudimentary ABS, no ESC, no traction-control and a six-speed manual transmission.So...  are you going to go pick one up?  Go ahead.  Show us how serious you are and trade whatever you're driving now for a Lotus Elise.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Jonathan Gwynne Do you understand basic logic or thought?  I went through why old tech like not having ABS doesn't take anything away from driving experience.  No one enjoys controlling the car by manually rolling up the windows. The input when you drive are controlling the following:1.  Gears2.  Brake3.  Throttle4.  SteeringTake away any of those and hand them to a computer and I'll be upset.  I'm sure you can get a computer to do 1 or more of those for you and probably go around a track faster, but you're not really the one in control and driving.  If I want to take the car out to a twisty mountain road I want to be the one in control, not the computer.  If you want to sit at your computer and watch a car go fast instead of actually driving it, go ahead.  For people that actually want to enjoy driving we need a real manual transmission
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+maxpowers3732 Look, if you want a car without power-steering, without power brakes, without traction-control or ABS... Good luck finding one.But don't pretend that demanding an inferior transmission in a modern car somehow makes you a better driver. And having an automatic transmission doesn't mean you're not driving.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Jonathan Gwynne So you admit people bought automatics when they were slower, less reliable, and less fuel efficient.  So why can't you understand why people today want to drive sports cars with a manual because they enjoy driving them more than an automatic?  How is it a better drivers car if you're not the one driving, but you're handing control off to a computer program?  Are you going to hand braking and accelerating off too?  Maybe steering?  Would you gradually hand more and more of the fun parts of driving to the computer or would jump right in and buy a self driving car if it were faster?  That would be a real drivers car where you don't have to worry about being bothered braking, accelerating, shifting, or steering and can instead focus on the reaction of people or watching videos as the car does everything for you.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+maxpowers3732Yes, back in the day, automatic transmissions were inferior to manuals in terms of efficiency and reliability - but some people bought them anyway because they were willing to accept all that for in exchange for the convenience of not having to shift. How, however, the pendulum has swung.  There is no reason to prefer a manual over an automatic and there hasn't been for many years now.  The only reason is for people who want to shout "Hey, look at me!!!  I can drive a stickshift!!!"I have owned many cars with a manual transmission.  When I bought my Delorean, I insisted on getting one with the 5-speed manual because the three-speed GM automatic was (and is) appalling. However, with the F-type, there is not only no downside to the automatic, there are significant benefits:  better fuel economy, lower service costs (no clutch to replace) and it is a better driver's car since you don't have to take your foot off the accelerator or your hand off the steering wheel to change gears.  That's why the 0-100-0 times are better in the automatic than the manual.Manual transmissions are for posers.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Jonathan Gwynne Yet they continued offering torque converter automatics for years when the manual was faster and more fuel efficient.  It's the same people buying them now that are too lazy/uncoordinated/don't care about driving.Only a complete tool would hand off the fun of driving to a machine.  Why not get a self driving car (which a lot of companies are working on) and play a game on your cell phone while the machine drives you around faster and more fuel efficient than you could yourself.  You're completely missing the point of a fun sports car.  Carburetors aren't a fun, integral part of driving.  Drum brakes don't work as well and aren't fun.  Why not swap out your steering wheel and pedals for a touch screen where you can watch movies as the car drives without you
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
It isn't "grandma's automatic". The days of three-speed slushboxes with inefficient torque-converters sapping power and fuel-economy are over. The new ZF boxes are simply better than manuals. More gears, faster shifts, better acceleration and better fuel-economy. And if you must select your gears yourself, just use the paddle-shifters.Sure, Jaguar is offering a manual gearbox for retro-weasels who just have to prove they can drive a stick-shift car. But this is a "style over substance" affectation.Only a complete tool would choose an antique six-speed manual over that glorious eight-speed automatic. Why not swap out the gasoline direct-injection system for carburetors while you're at it? Or retrofit drum brakes in place of the discs?

Not sure if Honda fixed their cvt for the new cars. Because on the original Honda Fit it was hard to move slowly in a traffic jam with the gear set on drive position. I had to set it on sport so I would not have to keep pressing the breaks to hard. With "normal " automatic gear box we don't see that problem and I find it safer then cvt. But I do prefer cvt for daily use since it is more economic, less noise and more comfortable to the passengers.

In reality when somebody has $200,000 or more to spend on a car who thinks of FORD? They think of Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin, and the list goes on and on. The point is the price needs to be right or the thing will not sell. The name FORD completely ruins the car.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-lUxZZR1n1PM/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAac/Dos0MfdExOs/photo.jpg?sz=64
You're wrong bro. Ford and Chevrolet are the market leaders in Europe. And this car is competing with the best. So I think the price is fair enough. I love Ferraris, Lambos, Bentleys and Porsches but I really love this car too and if I could get that a bit cheaper than those, I'd buy the Ford GT.

Only if you're an egotistical asshole who only cares about the name. People said the same thing about the last gt, they all sold... And are still being sold for large amounts of money. Saying the name ruins a car is ridiculous...

+Doc MC what are you trying to say? That a gtr r35 is worse than this GT?
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-JNmMFVrepYA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAFE/wZtda0EDfVc/photo.jpg?sz=64
+juan manuel True, but you're not the one with the money. Its like buying a $45 polo shirt when you can buy 2 to 3 Hollister shirts.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-lDVZQA3ntQg/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAACQ/TuBsGmhFqXQ/photo.jpg?sz=64
+MonroeSim Nope, that's lies told by the media and the government. The truth is only the rich get richer and normal people like you and me will remain relatively poor...
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-B5wpd3lUs_A/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAGM/ieyGoHBAV1U/photo.jpg?sz=64
Your mindset is all wrong, the lotto is not the only way to get rich. Go get some kind of degree if you already don't or go out and look for business opportunities. That's how most people get rich.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
I don't even know if rich people would buy this
