How to Load a Car onto a Tow Dolly
Marc shows you exactly how he loads our vehicle onto our tow dolly. While the process may vary slightly between different brands of dolly's and vehicles, this ...
+Niels Willemse Yes the RV lights are clearly visible. When it starts getting dark we also turn on the Mini stage 1 lights but we usually try to avoid driving at night with the RV anyway.
You've convinced me to go the tow dolly route for my soon to be purchased
toad. Have you guys picked up much rock damage on the front of your mini?
I'm wondering if some sort of barrier might be good to keep the paint chips
down to a minimum, as well as lessen the potential for a broken headlight
or chipped windshield. Thanks!
+RVLove | Marc & Julie Bennett "Haven't had any issues with paint chips on front of the MINI - but towing with the dolly is one of the reasons we decided to go that route, to elevate it higher off the ground for added protection."Yes, this is what I was hoping would be the case, and part of the reason why I want to go with a tow dolly, as well. Thanks for the advice! Cheers.
+Open-minded Skeptic Cool, assume you also read our post on tow dolly then? //www.rvlove.com/2015/08/11/faq-pros-cons-tow-dolly-4-down/Haven't had any issues with paint chips on front of the MINI - but towing with the dolly is one of the reasons we decided to go that route, to elevate it higher off the ground for added protection. Also it's a 2006 and already quite imperfect, we intentionally bought a cheaper/older car so we wouldn't get upset if anything happened to it on the road as it's pretty exposed to the elements.
I enjoy your videos! With your help I am learning how to help my husband
with all the things RVing will entail. We just got our first coach, 34' a
used one, but very nice and well kept. We hope to start next summer
although not full time as we have a brick and mortar business that will
require him to be on site most of the time for a few more years. In the
meantime, I will keep learning from you! Thanks!
+Laurie Adair Grove Awesome! Glad you find them helpful. You might also find the associated blog post useful when deciding on which way to tow //www.rvlove.com/2015/08/11/faq-pros-cons-tow-dolly-4-down Enjoy tour rig! Used is a good choice, let the first owner work out all the bugs!

Solomatic A Frame Instructions
How to assemble and use a Solomatic 'A' Frame and lighting board. Equipment supplied by Intertrade Engineering.
As said: Due to EU rules you can only tow an unbraked trailer of 750 kilos
regardless of the manufacturer's 'book' recommendation. Also "ON TOW" is
not legal as the trailer board has to still show the index of the towing
vehicle. Fortunately the unbraked weight of the trailer can be exceed
legally (unless it's over the manufacturer's specifications) if the towed
vehicle has broken down and is being towed to a 'nearby' repair facility.
These 'A' frames can be obtained from a variety of sources if you Google
for them. I have one to tow a tiny car behind my motor home so I'm still
fully mobile when camping in it. Mine is rated to 2500 kilos, but the
little car is nowhere near that.
At least in theory you can tow more weight with one if you add an
electrical braking system to the towed car. All you need is the correct kit
or make one from a couple relays, a solenoid and an electrical vacuum pump.
The real towing weights that a vehicle can handle are seldom published
thanks to EU legislation. Take the classic Range Rover for example. If
one gets a really old Haynes Manual the figures are quite interesting as
with an unbraked trailer off-road it can tow two tonnes. On-road the
figure is 750 kilos thanks to the EU! The really interesting figure is
"emergency use short distance low speed". From memory the towing capacity
is about eight tonnes! Four wheel drives that cannot be used in 4WD on
tarmac are IMHO not proper four wheel drives. Cars with full-time 4WD are
the best but the cost is rather high.
the legalities about towing with these have already been covered by other
people in comments, brakes on towed vehicle have to work, train weight, A
frames have to be certified etc.
what hasn't been said the maximum speed with these is 20 mph and 40 mph on
the motorway.
don't need a second driver, just use a trailer board. the legalities, to
use an A frame for towing a legal car (taxed and MOT'd) from a dangerous
place to a safe place. Unless the law has changed! That was the situation
when the video was made. hope that helps...
Great job, thanks. We have used these and have only bent one in five
years.Chain was slack and the road was 'greasy'. Seems that the towed
vehicle jack-knifed on a slow bend. A lesson learned. By the way, is that a
military base behind?
WARNING: If a car is on an A frame it is legally then a trailer. If a
trailer has brakes fitted (an a car certainly does) then they legally must
work. This set up legally requires a braking system and is illegal as shown
in this video.
Look in the handbook for the vehicle you are using to tow. it will say for
example towing limit 750kg unbraked 1200kg braked. stick to those guides
and happy days cos your legal. just dont try towing a transit van with a
mini.lol
Might have found it more useful , if I could have heard you properly and
saw what is was that you were doing under the car.
Maybe stand closer when filming perhaps, what do I know !!!
