Vintage Houghton Lake
Video slide show of vintage shots of Houghton Lake, Michigan's largest inland lake. Produced by the makers of www.LaMonaBeach.com - This video is only 1/2 ...
Long point is one of my favorite places on the lake. that is a beautiful
neighborhood and if I were to pick a neighborhood to buy in it would be
Long Point - except of course my own beautiful LaMona Beach neighborhood.
The two neighborhoods have a completely different feel though - Long Point
they refer to as the "glitter and gold rim of the lake" - LaMona Beach is
very cottage-like. Either is beautiful in their own right and dependent on
what you are looking for - (-: and can afford (-:
I was in Coyles a few weeks ago enjoying breakfast and they ahve those
great photos by the door. I saw a picture of the same boat I have on my
film - the Evelyn Boat. The Coyle's picture called the boat the "Coyle's
Fish Tug". I do know Denise McKenzie who owns Coyles so I am going to see
if she has any details also. But I am wondering if that boat was used at
one time to catch fresh fish for Coyles and served at restaurant? Probably
couldn't get away with that today - but back then?
At the 3:06 mark, I am 99% positive that the picture is of Spring Brook in
the East Bay just North of Denton Creek. My family owns the land abutting
Spring Brook and we have similar picture from generations ago before sea
walls and well pumps got there. Again I am not 100% certain but it still
looks exactly like that shapewise and the cut of the creek, but just a bit
smaller, and i believe one of those trees is still on the shoreline, it is
either a Giant old Willow tree or an Oak.
Wow, makes me homesick for all the great summers I had there, growing up!
My grandfather hunted, no doubt with the guys in these photos, he was there
all through the 20's & 30's before he built his own cabin down by the lake.
He hunted all through what are now the neighborhoods along the south side
of the lake before they were split into streets & lots. Our street was full
of all my G'pas best friends who were there at that time too. Thanks for
sharing!
That is fascinating and I had no idea. Do you know what the name of the
hospital was or can you pinpoint any years (or can your dad (-: Honestly, I
will tell you what, Houghton Lake's history is one of its greatest assets
and it is too bad it is not promoted more to benefit this community and
preserve this fascinating history. I would love to put out a book someday
just to preserve the record.
We used to stay at Heilman's resort every other year in the 50's and 60's.
Don't recall it's exact location (address, etc.) as I was a boy and only
cared that dad got us there and I could swim and fish. Anyone know where
exactly it was, and does it still exist? If I ever get a chance to return
to Michigan and go to Houghton Lake, would love to stay at the same resort.
Bombarding you here, but what can your dad tell me of the history of LaMona
Beach on the east side of the lake? If he has any pictures of this beach I
would LOVE to scan and return them because I have a home there (or any
pictures for that matter). The Houghton Lake Syndicate established LaMona
Beach in 1928 - does he know any history of the Syndicate?
Down at the end of Devonshire and on the right - on the south side of the
lake - Prudenville - there was once a resort. I guess there was once an ice
business (for those days before the refridgerators we have today!) in a
building there that employed 12 employees. Does he know what that resort
was called?
Does dad know any of the history of this Floyd "Spikehorn" Fletcher's
Excursion Boat? I am wondering if it is related to the Spikehorn restaurant
that is today on the NE side of the lake. There was also a Fletcher and
Clark Resort and I am wondering if it was the same Fletcher. Dad know any
history?
I have a old cottage on the lake and in the attic back in the 30's people
have signed and put there address some from Cincinnati Ohio a few from
Detroit area the oldest was 1919 the guy state's how many fish they cought
.
There is a photo of a family with a camper at an establishment marked on
the building as the "Lake Breeze Tavern". I think it is maybe in the 40's?
Does your dad know where this tavern was located?
I'll bet your father is a fascinating man to talk to. I do have a few
questions. I'll attach a few questions I've been curious for information
on. Let me know if he knows about any of these.
My famiely rented wendemere lodge for my dads 40th birthday. Do you live in
houghton lake? Also, To the right of the pines theater would be townline
rd. . the picture is looking south.
at 3:25 (Pines Theatre) you are looking at the Pines from the north
(looking south) and to the right of it would be Townline Road. Tower Hill
is about a mile or so back to the west.
the oicture of the Pines Theatre is looking south/southeast and is at the
intersection of what is now M-55 and Townline Road. Right next to Pineview
Highlands Golf Course
At 31 seconds I see a picture of some hunters, not a building. Are you
referring to Powell's the restaurant on M-55? ... or maybe am I looking at
the wrong slide?
Great video, though why the repeat pictures? There has to be more
(different) pictures to use. More from old tip up town and other winter
pictures would be great.
I grew up as a kid riding my bike on the old trail on Devonshire. I own a
cabin on Devonshire now and my kids love going to the island to swim and
play.
