The 1989 Audi 100 model had a driver HIC of 185 and passenger HIC of 710. The 1989 tested did have an airbag though. The 1986-1991 Audi 80, the smaller line, had a driver HIC of 600 and passenger HIC of 535 when it was tested for the 1989 model year as well. So the '89 Audis were quite a bit safer than the '85s, it looks like. March 29, 2015 11:39 pm

This is one of those cars where it did very poorly (for the driver) but the structure was sound. A lot of times, a 2,000+ HIC means structural failure; this was just a problem of the seat belt and steering column. Adding a driver airbag would have made that 2,105 HIC go way down, maybe even below 500. December 13, 2015 12:30 am

those femur loads are excellent. this is a 35 mph car crash and i weigh more than every one of those load measurements. (Not combined, of course)

See? A manufacturer that actually knows how to make a car. No need for side curtain deployment during a frontal impact. I hate it when I see that, what if you spun into the road way and were t-boned after your initial accident. Wouldn't those side air bags be important? Now, hit a wall going 50 MPH, it might help to have a bouncy castle inflate around you.

thx for the explanation. I just missed the topic and assumed that the test was done by euroncap (again forgetting that the euroncap always uses offset tests) :)

something's wrong with the info I guess. as far as I know 5th star is due to pedestrian safety. s4 may be a 5 star safe car. but not bcs of this crash test
https://gp6.googleusercontent.com/-FCqf3Ekq1KA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/kXk3fi4AgU8/s48-c-k-no/photo.jpg?sz=64
NHTSA uses star ratings differently compared to EuroNCAP. There is no pedestrian rating for North American vehicles.

Not really, the lack of airbags would probably still turn the occupants into meat stew. But yeah, probably safer than most cars of the time.
