Nonverbal Learning Disabilities- growing up with challenges
Nonverbal Learning Disabilities is a Neurological, Developmental, Social and Learning disability combined into one, a syndrome. I was diagnosed with it when I ...
Except with riding a bike and driving, I always wondered what was wrong
with me, I am never like everyoone else ever, I do good at some pclasses
but ones that go fast no one has every dignosed me for anything but all my
lif they said i was lazy, slow, and I wasnt trying hard enough. But I didnt
understand. I knew I was different so I live in fear alot mostly when it
comes to learning thngs on a job cuz i havent had much experience, or
making friends I cant do it. I have to explain I am a slow learnign, I am
smart but you have to show me very well, and I will always remember it. But
you cant tell everyone that u cant tell a job that because they want
convienent quick workers, they do not like to know your slow. I am not slow
but I learn differently, I am smart but I am not like everyone else. Your
right.
+brittany ritenour People who are different are smart but thye need the chance, but people dont always know how to do that especially in the professional world and its like only if they could understand I just take a lil more time I willl do very well but you cant make people understand why you are the way you are but you are a hard smart worker. All my life I wondered whats wrong, it wasnt everything but all the small things great enough to make you feel left out behind, unsuccessful, i was slow, you cant imply things to me you have to explain guide and help me. This summer I finally had enough and I was like I wonder if anyone else has problems like I do, or feel like I do, slower learning something, so that was when I found NVLD, I showed my grandma and sister they didn't think so because I had a bad past so they thought that was it, but Ive always been slow and learned the same even before the bad stuff happened and it isnt changing. ive learned some more stuff obviously but I cant get it together, but I believe I am and the more iresearch it it makes sense to me. EVerything you said except like two things is exactly how i feel. Just recently as an art student, I took a class at robertshaw and it was only one of the many things I couldn't keep up with. It was a super fast class, nice teacher but not one help you they showed you it once then you were on your own, and it was so imbarressing cuz I was alwasy the only one standing their, I wasnt being lazy I seriously didnt know what to do so I would get frusterated and say I need help theyd give me a few sentences, I never got help so I just gave up cuz I no longer wanted to feel my past experiences all over again of being weird, lazy, uncommited, unorganized, too quite, not trying hard enough, and a million other things. Yet no one knows how I feel but me! No one understands how much I struggle underneath, on the outside I look okay and normal but on the inside I struggle all the time and no one can ever see it. Its either you don't tell them or you tell them and they don't get it
Heyyy girl I am the same wayy! reply to me if you can! I just resently
found out about this and It matches me, i have always been slow and never
fit in, and everything you said is exactly like me!
Marisa- I am a mom of an 11 year old that has just been diagnosed with
NVLD. I just watched your video and am wondering "how do I explain this to
my sweet girl"? She cries to me and says she just wants to be normal. I am
sitting here crying while I listen to your video. I am getting her therapy
and help but what can I do? How can I be a better parent for her? I want
you to know it is very difficult for me as a parent to see my daughter
hurting and go through the bullying and the self esteem issues that she has
been struggling with for a long time. Your words are so encouraging but I
can't let her watch this because I can't let her see the part about
suicidal thoughts and your attempts. She would take that literally and I'm
afraid would try to do the same thing. Please help me to help her. You are
a beautiful and very intelligent girl and are so amazing about explaining
this on a level that my daughter AND myself can understand. Can you please
help me??? I think maybe I may have had or have this disability too. It
takes a very strong, type A personality to rise above and overcome the
issues related with this disability. I am hurting for my child and I want
to be there for her.
+Anne Marie Melvin Hello! Thank you so much for your sweet words. I will definitely check out that website! I'll send you an email too so you can fill me in on how things are going and so I can support you and your daughter the best I can. I've even done skype calls with people who have watched my videos so I can talk to them, and I'd be willing to do the same for you if you'd like! Here are some more videos that are more age appropriate for her to watch. However, as a parent, you may want to see the videos first yourself so you can decide what to show her. Hope you enjoy them. Hi! It is so great to hear back from you. I'm going to let my daughter listen to the video you recommended for teens. How very smart of you to make one appropriate for younger ones suffering from NVLD. She needs to hear she is not alone bc she thinks she is. You said just the right things and said them so eloquently. She will hear them from you as she tunes me out. She thinks I don't get it. I love her so much and can't thank you enough for the HOPE you are giving to me, my daughter and my entire family. You should become a public speaker and educate everyone around the world about NVLD. I'll help you! I don't keep up with FB bc it gives me social anxiety but please email me at [email protected]. I am so proud of you. Btw, check out understood.org. I'm finding that is helpful as we have been struggling with this everyday. It seems to be more pronounced each week. It hurts to see my daughter hurting and in turn be the receiver of all her stress and anxiety. Thanks for your support and words of encouragement. You are a strong woman and this will make us stronger!
+amelvin1972 Hello! I am SO sorry, I JUST got this message!!! Youtube must have glitched! I am so sorry to hear what is going on. NVLD at that age especially is difficult due to social difficulties. You are being a good parent right now by aching for your child and reaching out for help. Some parents don't do that. What you can do is research all you can about NVLD. Educate her teachers about it too by sending them articles or having a meeting with them to get on the same page about her needs. See if setting up an IEP or some educational plan for her if necessary is an option. I made other videos about NVLD FOR CHILDREN just for that EXACT purpose you said. This video was aimed more for late adolescents and adults. I am here for you if you need to talk. Do you have facebook? If you would like, add me on there and I can talk to you more consistently. Sometimes youtube messes with me haha. Hope all is well with you both.
I've had this all my life and it's inspiring to know that other people
understand the challenges that come with this. Your beautiful inside and
out and nvld is a character trait. In more ways then not it makes us see
the World in a very unique way.
Thank you for sharing about your NVLD. I have had it since I was a baby. I
am sorry to hear what you had to go through with all the bullying. I was
bullied a lot in elementary and middle school and that's the reason I was
pulled out of public school after 7th grade. Like you, math has always been
a challenge for me. Again, thanks for sharing and informing others about
NVLD.
+Josh Stephen Hello Josh! Thank you for sharing that with me. I am sorry to hear you were bullied a lot too. Glad to see you got through it. Stay strong!!! Thanks for watching!

Marisa, I'm 61 and was diagnosed with NVLD around eight years ago even
though I knew decades before this that I had abnormal deficits, even though
my relatively strong verbal skills obscured this fact to others who
interpreted my struggles as laziness. I'm delighted that you've already
received your diagnosis and that you're learning everything you can about
NVLD and sharing your knowledge with the YouTube world. My best wishes to
you.
+1953nagarjuna thank you so much! I appreciate your kind words. As frustrating as it is, a late diagnosis is better than never because finally things can start to make sense not only to you, but to others who wrongly thought you were lazy. I was diagnosed at the age of 8. I'm 19, almost 20 now. My goal is to let other people with NVLD know they are not alone. I send you the best wishes and hugs from afar!
Thanks for making these videos, Marisa! Growing up I always knew there was
something different about me that I couldn't quite articulate. After my
diagnosis at 14, a lot of my difficulties seemed to make a lot more sense.
I wish NVLD was more widely understood, too! (Even the Wikipedia page on it
is largely of unsourced information.) NVLD is sometimes invisible to the
people around us, but we're always aware of it.
Hello! Thank you! NVLD is definitely an invisible disability which is unfortunate because our disability so very real and often goes unrecognized by mental health providers/school psychologists/schools and is undetected or misdiagnosed. keep researching NVLD! I did and it helped me understand myself and also learn to forgive myself for mistakes and try being more patient with myself. Still, it is so hard to be patient with myself when the world doesn't understand. I wish the best to you! :)
