Hey I really love your bike! I pressume that you bought the the fiberglass
tank and seat set for the Yamaha XS650. I'm about to make my xs400 se to a
cafe. Do the Yamaha XS650 seat and tank fit with the xs400?
Actually extensive mods to the triple spar frame were needed to make it fit, Way more work than i had anticipated. Had to cut and bend the slanted triple tree and had to relocate the motor mount. not easy
1982 Yamaha XS400 Seca is hard to start
Update: I've cleaned the carbs 3 times now. I've taken the jets out, soaked them, sprayed them, check the diaphragms, etc. I've also removed the tank and ...
Your carbs need to be synchronized . And carb manifolds should be checked
for cracks they may look fine but could still have cracks. allso your air
box needs to be hooked up or you'll never find the prob .and check for
blown head gaskets. It will suck air untill it worms up that's when the
head material expands from the heat sealing up the leak . you mite check
spark plugs too if there is brownish color at the base of the porcelain
the plug is bad . spark is coming up through the plug when it ignites in
the engine
Hey Shawn, As it turns out I gave up and took the bike into the local shop. The local shop also found nothing wrong withe carbs, the intake boots, the plugs and wires, yet the problem persisted. In fact, the bike started to leave me places when it would act up AFTER I got somewhere just as often as acting up BEFORE I would try to leave. I went over the carbs 5 or 6 times; changing pilot settings, with/without filter, with/without airbox, and NONE of it made any difference when I tested it OR when the bike shop tested it. They also took a look at the valve clearances and head gaskets just like I had done.It turns out, in fact, that I had a ground wire that would decide not to ground unexpectedly. This ground would still let the engine turn over but not let the engine actually run. Interestingly enough, if you removed the loose ground after the engine had already started the engine would continue to run! This is why it would never die while I was mid-ride and also why it didn't matter what the engine temperature was.I find it interesting that I (along with everyone else) was looking at the carbs being the culprit, when it had NOTHING to do with the carbs. After the ground wire was buttoned down the bike has run consistently since then without exception!
Yeah I had a post on there and it would work great for 2 weeks and then go right back to this weird "moody" stuff. I consider myself a patient person, but I finally gave up and took it to a local shop that works on bikes exclusively. I haven't heard from them yet... I hope that means that it wasn't something obvious.
The bike will run hard if you have not synced the carbs from when you took
them off. Go to xjbikes.com and do some research because in order to sync
them correctly you will have to block the yics system.
Thanks nitrocarmsn, I bench synced them after I boiled the carbs. It's still a similar situation where the bike starts perfectly some days and not at all on others. On days where it does start, there is a lot of power throughout all RPM ranges, including WOT.
