Verizon's CEO Lowell McAdam thinks ending carrier subsidies is "a great idea"

I don't like Verizon's prices. They are incredibly over priced. I can buy
the LG Nexus 4 off contract for $350.00 and put it on Straight Talk for
$45/month with unlimited talk, text, web and save tons of money.
How would the insurance work if you were to bring in your old phone? Do you
get it from Verizon or do you have to contract it yourself? I also doubt
financing is something they want.
Here's hoping the Union figures out how to penetrate this company.

+SnakeBerry How exactly is a man of that age supposed to get laid, then? It must be near impossible. The loneliness is unbearable in those places. I think police state is the correct term for throwing an old man out on the street for merely this.
+SnakeBerry Exactly how is he abusing the system? Is it using his ability to buy booze for his buddies? Is it the prostitute? Please educate me on what he did that was abuse? Solicitation of prostitution and maybe a little black marketing of legal goods is all he's guilty of.

No more contracts so in the end you will pay full price, well $70 cheaper
than full price. $99 down then a $100 extra for the higher memory storage.
Then $20 a month for two years.
Most of the articles said they'll try a new method where u pay a down

Android Guy Weekly: Are Carrier Subsidies Holding Back Smartphone Updates?

I dont wanna be a fanboy but this is why i love Apple. The updates dont go
through the carrier. They go straight to your devices. The updates are
frequent as well. They are always improving and patching. I mean, look..
iPhone 4 from 2010 can run the same software as the iPhone 5 in 2012.. Show
me a Galaxy S running the same OFFICIAL firmware as the Galaxy S3.. its
impossible. Galaxy S stopped at 2.3.5. Why ? Because CARRIERS WANT YOU TO
UPGRADE. Before iPhone i had Galaxy S rooted with ICS and..
That's exactly why I don't sign up with the big 3 (Telus, Rogers, Bell) in
Canada anymore. I'm still using my 2y.o. BB 9700 that I paid $450 out right
without subsidy and got a $35 unlimited plan on Mobilicity. And, I mean
unlimited minutes, data and long distance in NA all for $35. If I were to
go with Big 3 it would cost more than $80/month on a 3yr contract. Over the
entire contract I save $1170 (45*36-450subsidy). I also take care of my
phone better because I want to get as much out of it a
Unfortunately we don' have any contracts here in Russia, but it's not only
about subsidies, right? Look at Samsung w/ their 20 models per year? They
are releasing phone w/ update not an update for phones. It's sad that I'm
still stuck w/ 4.0.2 on my official Galaxy Nexus here. Still 4.0.2, while
MoDaCo has 4.0.4 and he says it's awesome on SGN. I mean, there are ways to
keep it up to date, they really don't want to and it's just so sad. That's
the way to loose it to apple, honestly. Thanks Joe
This theory makes much sense. The carriers exist to do one thing: make
money. They would make more money leading their customers to believe that
they need to buy new hardware in order to enjoy the latest and greatest OS
rather than updating the OS version on their customers' existing hardware
and I speculate that this is the true reason they frown upon customers
taking the OS update process into their own hands. I'm with T-Mobile and
this is why I loved FlexPay. It's a shame they deep 6ed it...
Conspiracy theory? Hell, any representative that's honest with you will
tell you that your theory is completely true. From the research I've done,
American carriers run their businesses very badly for the consumer. This is
a nation that favors the business, Europe is a continent that *mostly*
favors the consumer. I think you'll find an overwhelming majority of
businesses here do numerous things that benefit them at the expense of us.
It won't change unless we make it. It seems we don't want to.
You make a great point but like people have said its on the consumers to
because we go for the latest now what if we didn't buy the product wouldn't
carriers want to push updates. Although the discount you get is preety much
being added to your bill and thats y they then have etf's that go down
every month so y not get, the contract and at the end you and take
advantage because if you get one off contract your monthly bill doesnt go
down just because of..that so just get a discount and enjoy
hit it on the nose. I bought an atrix 2 on contract, returned it for the
HTC vivid, returned it for the nitro which was faulty, nitro 2 also had
bugs. took nitro 2 back for a skyrocket. after returning the vivid they
told me no more but they want your business. I've returned close to ten
devices last year. they knew me by name, but I don't see it as my fault. if
they didn't release a new phone every week it wouldn't be an issue for me.
I've also paid cash for a few phoes as well.
I'd guess the 'cheap device' you refer to from your friend is an HTC
phone... lol. I agree with most of your argument about the provider being
the customer but then look at the consumer, they flock to whatever they
think is good.. like the iphone. the customer does have some power. Samsung
needs to twist Tmo's arm and force their ICS updates to upkeep their
reputation, in the end it will keep current customers looking for more
samsung devices.
Interesting never really thought about some of the points, but I do agree
with people not seeing value in phones. I remember one of my friends
thought that paying 199.99 for a new phone was too much. I laughed and
said, "That phone is like $600 retail." Personally $50 really, that is a
slap in the face. I got a free phone from At&t and sold it for more than
that over year later. Always thought that carriers in the US were shady.
You have a very valid point, I we are living in Germany now and pre-paid
options are just as good if not better than contract... I think the
American people are too lazy to do anything to stand up to the phone
companies and have it OUR way... There must be something we as Americans
can to to combat this crap and have cell service the way we want it, NOT
the way they are giving it to us...!
only in america .... ;) no just kidding. In Germany, none of the major
carriers is even slightly capable of prescribing features of any phone what
so ever, the market is just too small even though they are subsidiaries of
international telcos. However, they benefit from the "slow update" process
as well and from business perspective your point is totally reasonable. Sad
but true.
love the video, keep them coming. i agree with you and it makes me more
appreciative of my old Sony Ericsson X10. it started with i think 1.7 or
lower and got all they way up to 2.3.3. they even managed to "fake" a
multi-touch on there to. so i dont know what Sony did to give so many
updates but i think i feel safer with them because of it (not missing out
on the newst OS)
In my country you get the option to either buy the phone unlocked with a
simonly plan or buy the phone subsidised on a 2 year plan. when you add the
costs, you generally pay about €50-€100 more on a subsidised phone when
compared to an unlocked one. most people just don't want to pay the full
price up front 'cause they just don't have the money and don't want to wait.
this is why i use phones til their broken. i have the evo 3d and im going
to use it til the wheels off. idc about ics or jelly bean it works fine and
lag free with just 2.3. no wonder the europe and virgin mobile versions of
the evo 3d got ics and the u s didnt. thats fucked up. ive never been a
hacker of phones but im considering it now.....
