+frogsoda we must understand and have to accept that some thinks are different in different countrys! Today greenwood woodturning is no longer taboo in the middle of europe, especally for non professional woodturners. What do they do? They make bowls and decorative items. In this cases normaly it doesn't matter what the wood does while it dries. What does a professional woodturner do? As an example: He makes Bannister, pins for ninepin bowling alleys, feet for furniture, pillars and formerly spinning wheels. For this you can NOT use wet wood! In this video, the woodturner makes a bowl with a lid. What do you think will happen the next day(s) with a wet bowl and a wet lid? The lid doesn't fit any more!The speed of the video is higher than the reality. That makes the impression of wet chips shooting away from the tools. But the chips are curled, wet chips are rather straight. And the chips on the turners hand and arm don't look like heavy wet chips. Curled chips are an indication of a sharp tool which cuts the wood. And yes, the wood came from a log, but the log is dry! See the sawdust at the bandsaw.

+Reinhold Schweitzer And at 6:08 he has a catch with that hook tool. Those shavings do look like wet wood. Wet wood comes off in long streams just like in this video. Not "heavy chips" like you describe. Dry wood comes off in chips. I don't see why cutting wet wood would be "taboo". It's very practical. Especially for production turning.

+frogsoda to turn wet wood was a taboo for professional woodturners in germany. You can see also dry sawdust on the bandsaw and while sanding the outside of the bowl. The chips also looks not heavy like wet chips do. I'm quite sure about what I write here. My dad started learning prof. woodturner in 1924 and he made his master craftsman examination in 1933. He never turned wet wood in his life!
