I actually didn't put my question the best way, I shouldn't have said drop.
Instead, it sounds to me the th is pronounced in a different way when
there's a word which ends with a T then the next word begins with TH. I
mean, combinations like: at the, get there, seems to have the T of the
first word stressed when linked with TH, at least in fast conversation. In
short, I just want to know whether there is any particular rule on that
linked T + TH pronunciation. Thanks again!
Hi, dear Rachel, I love your work and I would like to know how to send
questions and suggestions on topics for your next videos. I have a question
I couldn't find out on your videos. It's about linking the th sound.
There's videos about that, but I still can't find the answer I've been
looking for. I've noticed the th after a t sound is like dropped, i.g. "I
got there" (I got'ter) / "I let them go" (I let'tem go). Is that correct?
Thanks a lot!
y always refers to a form of i. In the first syllable of syringe there is
unaccented barred ɪ so it can be /ɪ/ or /ə/. In "my" y is plain tense i
vowel /aɪ/ because syllable is open and graphic position is free. At the
end of "busy" it's unstressed /i/ not /ɪ/. y is consonantal i -> /j/ in you.
You pretty much have to learn the pronunciation individually as you learn
the word. I made a video on some helpful resources "How to Pronounce Any
Word in American English". There are a few rules -- like for plurals or -ed
endings. I've also made videos on those topics.
Hey! It's Fluffyyy! (Oh my gosh!) (Well, perhaps not a good example of Y
usage yet at least I can say I tried.... not very hard..... actually it was
a really lame attempt at .... whatever. Sorry. I'm really sleepy while
writing this).
Thanks for your question. You can leave them here on on my Facebook page, I
do my best to respond. I would not drop the TH in 'there' -- but we do drop
the TH in THEM. I made a video on that, so check it out! :)
