I think it fair to point out that in England there are many regional
accents which people from overseas struggle to understand. However, I think
the advice given on this video is good.
Many people I have met here in England who are from overseas speak good
English - perhaps better than the locals who sometimes use local dialect
words.
So a woman with an extremely hard Indian accent is saying to try to speak
in a neutral, not an American accent, which is usually what people consider
to be a pretty neutral. Indians are the worst English speakers on the
planet. They thing they are speaking British English. Far from it.

Speaking With Yourself to Improve Your Spoken English
//EnglishHarmony.com Do you have no-one to practice English with? You don't have any English speaking friends, you don't work in an English speaking ...
Hello Robby. I admire your courage and the effort you have put in
developing conversational English skills. I also find your blog very
accurate and useful. In my case, Central American living in California, I
learnt to improve my American accent by watching TV soap operas, such "Days
of our lives"- and repeating along the actors. Then I would tape myself and
followed listening to the TV show underground and contrasting it with my
tape recorded voice at the same time. Keep up the good work!
@laverkfc4stitching The trick is to find the middle point where you don't
speak too fast and not too slow. Here's how it's done: first, experiment
with speaking with a harder accent of yours - on most occasions it helps
speaking faster without getting tongue-tied; when you've achieved
comfortable speech, do away with the accent - now you should feel much more
confident. At the same time, if speaking too slowly makes you second-guess
yourself, speak a bit faster. Just do some self-practice!
Thank you so much for your help! I am a Spanish Interpreter, I can speak
really fluently when I am interpreting in both languages, those ideas are
not coming from my head and then is so easy and automatic to say it in
English, but when I am trying to express my own ideas in English becomes so
difficult I want to use all the vocabulary I know but is not coming out of
my mouth and I hesitate, I am afraid to keep using same worlds, what can I
do to be aware of using a richer vocabulary? tnks
Check out the latest Rihanna's video - You Da One. Maybe we should start an
appeal for Rihanna to change it to "You're The One"? ;-) I'd rather accept
it and by the way - I can't see who's granted you a permission to tell
other people what they should and what they shouldn't say? If MrLargi
chooses to write the way he writes - that's all right. You can only make
him feel bad about himself by pointing out mistakes in such an aggressive
way.
Thanks man, you helped me a alot! I am 14 years old kid (or teenager) who
moved from Pakistan to Canada, and I was having problems talking to my
(NEW) friends! Sometimes they even think I am wierd, or yell at me What are
you saying?! But You teached me how to walk! And when I record myself, I
sometime feel like a native speaker! Thankyou for all of your hardwork and
keep it up! In a world like this! Without English, you cant survive!

@cahayatek I'm really sorry, but I didn't actually get what you were trying
to say in your comment....;-) Are you trying to tell me I should improve my
listening skills? And what does the next sentence mean - "You don't have to
be such a hyper-correct person..." Anyway, looks like composed by some
spam-software so that folks like you can post meaningless comments.
I'm Janine, the AmericanEnglishCoach I think you are great Robby! I'm going
to recommend your videos to my students and maybe they will be interested
in buying your materials. I love your enthusiasm! Obviously, you've worked
hard and thought a lot about the advice you give. No doubt you have talked
to yourself a lot about learning English too! :-)
Oh, this is going to be great for exposing my students to both the
technique, but also to my beloved & missed Irish accent...! I lived in
Ireland for quite a while, but it's not often I hear the accent in Spain...
This accent is just beautiful and so soft...In my opinion, I put the Irish
accent above the American or the British one...
Sounds like your mom knew exactly what she was doing! By the way, at the
moment I'm preparing an article on my blog post about learning American
slang while watching Desperate Housewives (based on my own experience), so
I guess we would have something to talk about if I ran into your mom on the
street! ;-)
I've used this strategy for a long time and it has helped me a lot. now, I
can say I'm pretty fluent. people think I'm kinda crazy. Good news is that
I'm not the only one who talks to himself in order to improve fluency, I
guess. yeah It totally works, at least it did for me.
hay bro whats good!! hay man i tell u my problem!! i try to speak very fast
so i stutter a lot and get confused because i think its silly or dumb when
u speak slowly !! so what u think should i start speak slowly and then
speed it up or just try to speak so fast with mistakes
@N0zer0 Well... I don't know to be honest with you! It's just the way I
pronounce it, and as I've made it clear in other videos, I don't put
emphasis on perfect pronunciation. I don't think it's a pre-requisite for
fluency, and as far as my speech is understood, I'm fine.
Hello EnglishHarmony man ..It's good idea to talking with myself to
practice english, But sometime want to talk with others who can speak
english. Very useful video. Thank you. From Thailand. ....If anyone want to
practice with me my skype id is one_sweetlady
Thanks bro, and keep up the brilliant job you're doing with your
self-practice! It's totally true that when speaking on your own you may
take your fluency to the next level and feel like a native - that will do
wonders to your English confidence in long term!
Hi its me amit.i want to improve my english through ur video but if u had
tought us using subtitle and black board it would be outstanding and
remarkable because these really help all the new learners like me to
understand well.thank you verry much.
you could try to improve your vocabulary one word at a time. Pick the word
you want to add to your vocabulary and build 2 or 3 sentences using it.
Then you repeat the same steps with other words until you incorporated them
all to your natural words
that's what i do everyday , it really works =) haha and thank you for your
idea of describing the situation and environment , it inspires me so much ,
because of the weak education system here , i have to put in more efforts~
thank you anyway ^_^
There are more ways to pronounce them but one should not mix accents. In
your place I would develop my Irish accent consequently. It's [əˈbɛʊt|] in
Irish English and [əˈbaɔt|] in standard English (British, American,
International).
The idea of speaking English to myself came quite naturally (without
reading any guidings, materials on the Internet or someone told me to do
it). And now I see this video. Happy to hear that many people do the same
exact things.
