Dr. Dale Rollins with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service discusses the inherent inefficiency of quail feeders and how to use on-the-shelf technology (i.e., ...
Paul makes a feeder for the quail that will cut down on waste. Very simple and easy to do. He uses a 1 1/2" hole saw-not 1 1/4" as he stated, to draw the holes.
I got to mine today. I HAD to see what you said about busting the plastic -
yes- you were right. But , I was stubborn and do not know where the
soldering gun went to so I found a Jar the same width at the plastic box
and inserted it in there - turned them both right side up so that the jar
held the pressure of my drill bit and it popped right out -even the waste
piece into the jar so it was easy to keep up with them and throw them away.
Thank you so very much.
I owe you many beers for this. In two months, you've saved me a good $50 on
feed and God knows how much on shavings. If you've got Paypal, send me your
email address; I seriously owe you a cut of that money my birds aren't
throwing all over the bottom of their pen. Between this and the quail-egg
cutter I bought on eBay, I can almost forgive whichever snitching neighbor
forced me to get rid of my chickens (which aren't legal in city limits) and
switch back to quail (which are).
Looks like your feeding them green fodder also hows that working out? Does
it cut down on the amount of store baught feed to make it worth the hassle
?
+Walt Lars We haven't gotten the fodder system going the way we want as of yet so, this was a test run to see if they liked it or not. They do, but we would only be using it as a treat or supplement for them. We're not going to be replacing their feed with it. Thanks for commenting!
This video we teach you how to make a simple yet effective bulk quail feeder for cheap. We only have to feed monthly now so we can focus on collecting eggs ...
Love it great job. I will make mine this way so thanks!
The Currie Quail Feeder
The Currie quail feeder is a home-made quail feeder; it is a simple, inexpensive, and rugged feeder for those seeking to provide supplemental feed (milo) to ...
I couldn't find any 30 gallon drums...they're largely held in deposit by
lube suppliers, etc. So I'm trying out 20 gallon Behren's galvanized trash
cans. Got 'em at Tractor supply for $16/each. I'm gonna configure a belt or
strap across the top to keep the top on. They're thinner than a drum, so
probably won't hold up as well. I'm gonna secure them with T-posts through
the handles and hope that works to keep them upright.
Update: The 20 gallon trash cans work great...put out 5 of them and quail
are hammering the milo. I ended up making some stands from concrete to get
the holes at the right elevation...I couldn't find any tire rims for stands
(when you don't need 'em, you see them everywhere), but for $2 worth of
concrete and some formica forms, I had solid concrete stands that exactly
fit the bottom of the cans.
The only thing I don't understand is what happens to the feed that sits at
the bottom of the barrel below the level of the hole? Doesn't it ever go
bad and spoil the rest of the feed?
Where do you find the 30 gallon metal drums? I'm having a hard time
finding them around the DFW area.
