The rituals go back a long time - my cousin a Singapore Airlines cabin crew; used to visit London/Manchester/Paris/Amsterdam when he flew there and I was a student in UK - stayed in hotel with him. Heard all the ghost stories about hotels - so leave TV on; and the film The Shining - you must watch if you haven't... ghosts appear in mirrors so I wave in mirrors. C'est la vie ;-)

Yah - the only place I've been where no alcohol is Kuwait. Even on Kuwait Airways - no alcohol. Can have alcohol in hotels at UAE... there are no bottle shops, so to speak ;-)

King Africa - I grew up watching Eddie Murphy films - Beverly Hills Cops at the Beverly Palm Hotel - got a free upgrade for accusing the hotel "coz there's no Niggers allowed in here" and Coming to America film... as an African Prince staying in a hotel "we desire a very poor room"... absolutely great stuff Eddie Murphy. Maybe 2015, I'll get the ball rolling in Africa ;-)

Lee, you know Qatar Airways flew the A350 yesterday for first time. Tourists are getting spoilt for choice, I haven't been on a B787 yet. Remember the A380 First Class stuff? Shangri La beach hotels nice - Doha should be nice, Hambantota also coastal - they play cricket internationals there, and the commentators always say how they have to navigate cobra snakes - I'd freak out if I saw a snake in the wild... maybe try the SL Doha. Also SL Villingilli Maldives on the mental calendar. I'm developing a soft spot for Four Seasons too...Ivan, the land of Novak Djokovic... that guy knows how to hit a tennis ball!!! I have a plan to visit 100 countries - on about 80 at the moment. The regions I've never been are Sub Saharan Africa, central America and Eastern Europe, for the reasons you give (get mugged/killed) - I'm not being funny or racist... I'll take this as an invitation to Serbia, Yugoslavia was very popular with tourists before all the bad stuff. In Sri Lanka where I was born, tourism picking up after the civil war ended there...

+MrKesavaraj Just one final thing Raj, are you aware that in 2015 Shangri-La are opening new hotels in Ulanbator, Bangalore, a new beach resort in Hambantota Sri Lanka - and DOHA! It's opening in May I think, so maybe a month or two too late for you! Also, Shangri-La have taken over management of the famous Le Tousserok Resort in Mauritius! I only found that out today - that's quite some coup! 

+Lee Claxton Yep, the hotels will keep you posted. The flights - its Chinese New Year next month so have days off. Flights Qatar Airways - and yes, Qatar Airways Dreamliner B787-9... you're always one step ahead ;-) 

+MrKesavaraj Yes Raj, good choice - the Marsa Malaz Kempinski? Looks really nice, and I think you get a butler in every room, not just suites. :) Now Banana Island I didn't know about really, amazing that something like that is in Doha (even Dubai doesn't have overwater villas as far as I know). I hope you enjoy your trip to Qatar - I hope you're heading there on the QR 787 Dreamliner from Changi?

Lets say the average doctor in USA gets paid 250k a year (similar to other professesions - lawyers, accountants, bankers on average)...  happy live like get 200k - so 50k a years goes on travels - simple right ;-) Do what you love...

+MrKesavaraj Merry Christmas to you too Raj! I agree Ritz Carlton are a bit stuffy...that's why Ive never used them (as far as I remember - although HK Ritz looks cool). Shangri-La is among the very best for sure. Shangri-La opening Colombo and Bangalore in 2015, maybe other places too! I feel another trip coming on! 

We're both Shangri La fans right. The issue with Ritz Carlton is personal - Bahrain had political issues at the time I stayed RC then so forgiven; I got chucked out of RC Singapore coz the guy thought I was drunk when I wasn't. The next vid The Sanchaya - I was talking to the Chef today - he worked at RC Sydney before and I said to him (RC Sydney closed now) I think Four Seasons best in world. He agreed RC stiff and "Sydney not ready" his words for RC. RC are obnoxious and arrogant. The conversation with Chef today - Four Seasons and Shangri La the best because relaxed and casual and equally luxurious. No need for RC pretence right. Coz we're hotel lovers I'll share this with you.Merry Xmas and Happy New Year, Lee. Emirates Palace is a one off. Here's to Shangri La 2015.
