Hey mate thanks for all your contribution, i've bought all but one of your
courses and have learnt a shit ton, thanks!
I also loved your dissecting Dilla videos!
My question would be is there anything you would add or expand upon about
Dilla's sound, either from your own observations or from the engineers you
know that have worked with him.
Also you mentioned that the guys you know who did work with him pretty much
left the music alone and only worked on making the vocals interact with the
beat correctly. This must mean that Dilla was a pretty skilled
mixer, would you say that generally speaking his sound (in terms of just
the music) was 100% him, no work done by other engineers?
Cheers for your help
+Kregan Miller It's not 100% (and I'm getting info second hand), but vast majority. Bob Power mixed a lot of Dilla stuff with Dilla in attendance - so even the more hands on mixes were still oversaw by him. A lot of records came in the form of 2 tracks - just out the MPC straight to tape whether mixed by Dawson or Power or whomever else. And if you check the credits Yancey is listed as mix engineer for a number of Slum Village projects and instrumental tapes. In fairness you can kind of tell the records that were done by Power vs. done by Dilla. Power's stuff sounds a bit more polished and dimensional but he still retained that initial sound. The only thing I can add that I didn't say in the video is that the real corner stone of his production is a "loose" but connected pocket between the drum programming, bass hits, and sample/chops. It's clearly done live with little to no quantization.
+Joey Sturgis Forum Podcast Hey bud, sorry my comment was for Matt and his tutorials. My favourite productions are from guys like Dilla, Madlib, Dre, Rza, Pete Rock etc.
+Kregan Miller Thanks for watching and commenting on this video. I'm not 100% sure what you're referring to but I wanted to ask you a question, what are some of your favorite productions?
Do you have any experience mixing virtual orchestra? Would love some tips
on that. Specifically on dynamics. I'm currently struggling to achieve a
mix that has some life but still sounds loud and full.
+Joey Sturgis Forum Podcast Awesome! Thanks for the advice :)Personally I look up to guys like Thomas Bergersen and Ivan Torrent for their fantastic combination of emotional orchestra and hard hitting sound design.
+JAZZ Yeah, multiband compressors are great for orchestras, so is linear phase EQ. Also, its great to use distortion as a way of saturating the signal against dense mixes. What are some of your favorite orchestra mixes?
Joey Sturgis is such a wealth of knowledge, he has a facebook group page
too: https://www.facebook.com/groups/joeysturgisforum/
Thank you Weiss!, I'm subscribed.
+Roland Garcia Thanks for plugging the forum, I appreciate that. We also have a podcast which I am commenting from as of now! What's some of your favorite productions?
Today I was mixing my seven nation army cover, and I couldn't hear kick
very well when the electric guitar went in on my headphones. When listening
on speakers it was ok. What I did was to make duplicates, 2 excactly the
same (one was activated in chorus, other one all time) and 1 with a high
pass. I boosted some mid-range on the high-passed duplicate. The effect was
great. That's something you might wanna do when mixing metal too :)
+Joey Sturgis Forum Podcast I know that I haven't discovered anything new. I'm just 17 years old boy who's just started his adventure with music. I know about this multiplying from the videos on The Pro Audio Files channel but I can't recall anyone saying something about making a second track of kick and highpassing it, then messing in eq. Maybe there is a video with that technique or maybe it's just crap and nobody does that. My favourite productions are probably most of Pearl Jam's songs, I like the sound of Vs album. Lately I have listened to Yeah Yeah Yeahs latest album after about 2 years or so of not listening to it. I was amazed by the quality. I like Sacrilige the most from this album and Mosquito has interesting sounding drums. The next one will probably be Jack White's albums, I like that kind of old-school sound there. I'm also pretty amazed by U2's pop, it's from 1994, I think, and it sounds like it was released now. I think that if it really was released now people would like it more than then. I hope you understood my "english" :D
+Wilkokłak (TheReaperV11) Absolutely, this "technique" is called "mults or multing" because you're "multiplying" the signal into "multiple" channels. What's some of your favorite productions?

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally 2014... What happens this time
Every year motorcyclists gather for 10-14 days at the world's largest Motorcycle rally... in Sturgis South Dakota. Were you there this year? Are you going next ...
Yeah you do see a bunch of shit at Sturgis. You get to see a bunch of saggy
tits, fat rednecks, sunburns, drunk people, obnoxious loud shitty
music/people/motorcycles, horrid food and no hotel reservations. If you
like these things, then Sturgis is for you. If you don't like this stuff,
then just do other motorcycle events. There are better rides that you can
do that wont give you a headache from hell.
Hope to see you this year at the 75th. Living out here makes it easy for me
but if your looking for a cold beer and some good food your welcome to stop
by the house.
At 1:13 I am getting his Vegas '03 championship jersey signed. It is one of
2 made for the event and it was digital camo! The pants say thanks troops
to commemorate them for their sacrifices. James Stewart has the only other
set...Not everyday Ricky Carmichael is literally in your backyard! Thanks
Ricky....We miss you!!
