Frigidair Upright Freezer repair r134a refill part 1 of 2

I have the same freezer and same symptons, no freezing except partly on 1St
shelf. A technician added some freon and it worked well for 1 week temp
reached -30 celsius. Then temp start rising, he came and told me that there
was a leak and this would cost aroud 400$. So I did it myself. I bought the
seal and the freon. When I added the seal ( 1 can) the pressure reached
60PSI and added one can of freon 6 oz, the pressure reached 75psi. Now the
freezer is cooling at -10 Celsius, but is not arriving at -20 as it should
be. I am trying to add another can, but pressure is still at 75psi. The
gauge I am using is not a professional one, it got it when bought the cans(
RED TEK). What shall I do to have -20 to -30. celsius?
+tom wolf More than likely your compressor motor is seized internally. If this is the case the compressor motor will buzz/hum for a second before shutting off the power meter/circuit breaker.
I have a Kelvinator Impression Series 500 Twin Air No Frost 1998 model.
For the past 3 days the fridge department temperature oscillates between 13
and 15 degrees and the freezer temperature is 0 degrees (and not freezing
ice-blocks). The freezer evaporator fan is working, the compressor is
starting and working, the evaporator is not over-frosting, the air ducts
between freezer and fridge departments are free of blockage, cool air is
circulating into the fridge compartment, I couldn’t find the defrost
thermostat behind the freezer panel, the defrost timer is not stuck in
defrost, I tested the heater element using the defrost timer manually and
the heater element is heating, I don't know if the defrost timer could be
damaged and cycling too often, but I haven't noticed the evaporator fan
switch off once, so I don't think that's the problem. The seals were all
changed 12 months ago and all sealing well. The problem happened from one
day to the next. What can it be, do you have any suggestions? Can the
fridge be low on gas? Or can it be something else? Please help.
+sixtyfiveford Thanks champ, I have really appreciated your videos and your responses to my questions. You have confirmed my worst concern, which is that I need to replace the fridge. Cheers, PS. Love your videos.
Then enough refrigerant isn't reaching the evaporator coil (low gas, plugged filter/drier or rarely a worn out compressor). You can't really test the filter dryer. The fix for that is replacement by solder/brazing a new one in. If you can find a visual gas leak then you can fix that and add more refrigerant gas. The compressor is also one that is hard to test without piercing the lines and hooking up gauges. Most Technicians will recommend a new fridge as the repair cost can get close to the cost of new. If they do work on it they will look for a leak and then replace the filter/drier. This requires removing all the refrigerant gas and recharging it (not cheap). They will more than likely also recommend a new compressor(not cheap).
o+sixtyfiveford I can't measure the temperature, but only the top evaporator coil is freezing, the rest 6 rows of coils are not showing any frost on them.
The entire evaporator should be icing up and getting down towards minus 20 C. If it isn't all covered in frost as it is running then you're low on gas or the filter/drier is plugging up.
+sixtyfiveford I didn't know how to test the inline dryer/filter, what I have done is feel all the condenser coils to test for hot gas flow. I noticed that all the coils are fairly warm but easy to hold (between 50 & 55 degrees Celsius), but 1 coil was too hot to hold onto (say 65 to 70 degrees maybe). Does this give you any indication of the condition of the inline filter/drier?
+javierpaez13 If the evaporator isn't getting cold enough and icing the entire thing there is a good chance that it is either low on gas or the inline filter/drier is clogged.
bummed out I thought it was about organizing it.:(
