Switzerland: Army join border control to protect Swiss border
The Swiss Armed Forces joined the Swiss border control for joint exercises outside the town of Biel-Benken, on the Swiss-French, Saturday, under the name ...
+Derp McDerpington What are you talking about mate, I can understand them just fine. It's not the general sound of the dialect, but the fact that they use some different words for things, words we aren't familiar with. The rest is perfectly intelligible.
+Morpheus I never declined that Switzerlands origins are German. But I do not accept the assertion that Switzerland today ist the same as Germany today and that there is no Swiss culture and language. This assertion is just wrong.
+Morpheus Why is the language a key to forming a country? The USA should be UK in your logic. Because same language (US english is different I know, but you can count this as dialect). I do not understand what you try to say with "it's not a country but it does not belong to Germany, France or Italy. So in your view it's nothing. So what about Lichtenstein? Is this also no country? I guess the people living there would not agree if we would just add it to Switzerland.
+john smith Like I said. Genetically Americans are Europeans. Europeans are genetically Africans or Arabs. What has this to do with Switzerland not having its own culture or language?
+Morpheus Because it has it's root in the indogermanic original language. Like every german dialect. The german you know the swiss people call "Hochdeutsch" which you could reffer to as "High German" or "Standard German". This form of German was created in the middle of the 18th century. Thats where they started to develop orthography and punctation. At this time people still were talking in those what you call dialect. For them it was their language. The acceptance of the "Eidgenössische Bundesverfassung" in 1848 is deemed to be the foundation of switzerland. So By the time Switzerland was created, the German language you know did not even exist. What you say is like you would say that Dutch is no language because of it's connection to the "Old High German". And by the way, there exists different writings of Swiss German grammar and Swiss German orthography. But since there exists different dialects is Switzerland there is no official grammar for the Swiss German. That's it for the language. To your statement that Switzerland has no own culture i will not respond. This tells me you know nothing about Switzerland. Swiss people are proud not to be Germans. Do your resarch about Switzerland and how it was created.
+Morpheus So what? The people speak and write in Swiss german when talking to each other. Only offical documents are in German. But I do not understand why the fact that Swiss is not a offical accepted language with defined grammar would make the Swiss population Germans. I do not accept that and if you would know a Swiss you would not think this way too.
+Morpheus No they do not. Most germans do not understand what is called "Swiss German". And with most I mean about 95%. In schools the "German German" is teached. But no Swiss would talk German with another Swiss. Today students are forced to talk in German in class, Swiss German is not the language of education.
+john smith Genetically German. What does that have to say? Genetically all Americans are European. Genetically most European could be African or Arab. So what?
+David hEIDSEMAN If you think Switzerland is Germany then you do know nothing Jon. The Swiss population refuses to join the EU, Altough parts of the government try to force it.
