MM114 - Obama Wrong on Guns

Bill, you need to look closer at the numbers in Norway, which were skewed
by a single incident. I did a quick look and found this regarding Norway,
where in truth they have a very low rate of homicides and fatalities from
the use of guns:
The 2011 Norway attacks were two sequential lone wolf terrorist attacks
against the government, the civilian population, and a Workers' Youth
League (AUF)-run summer camp in the Oslo region on 22 July 2011, claiming a
total of 77 lives.
I don't know about the other countries, but as you already know statistics
can be deceiving. I'll admit I believe that more guns threaten rather than
protect us, that violence begets violence, and as in England where few cops
carry guns, there are almost no deaths as a result of guns fired by the
police.
To believe that carrying more guns will make us safer is, to me, very
irrational and simply an emotional attachment to the second amendment that
was created when our society was far different than today. We are not
living in a combat zone; we do not live in a place where there are all
sorts of dangers like wild animals, little law enforcement, or even attacks
from unfriendly Indians.
In any case, I don't believe that guns should be taken away from people,
only that the possession of guns be controlled so that only responsible and
law-abiding people be allowed to possess them. Sure, the wrong people will
get guns on the Black Market, but I think strict laws will help prevent and
reduce this.
on per capita basis. since there is a much smaller population in Norway, and Anders Breivik made a single massive attack. On a per incidence basis however, which is likely what Obama was referring to, the difference is staggering.
