+Justin Hoskie Well argued. I don't necessarily agree with everything you said but I appreciate the way you articulated your opinion. If only everyone on the Internet knew how to be diplomatic the world would be a better place.
+Shelby Steverson When I first heard Jake's Seymour, before seeing it, I thought the same thing. Every picture I say didn't look like Seymour to me; it just looked like Jake Gyllenhaal in glasses. He sounded too meek and small, and I thought he was playing up the "nerdy" aspect way too much. But after seeing it, and seeing what he was actually doing, I've completely flipped and he's now one of my favorite Seymours. And what I like is exactly what I didn't before. Jake's Seymour the first truly introverted, awkward, self-conscience Seymour I’ve seen. He still has the growth and character development, but the way he plays Seymour is as someone who is awkward, shy, and has almost no self-esteem or self confidenceThe way he delivers the intro and first verse of “Suddenly, Seymour” is a prime example. Usually, Seymour’s played as someone who, if not confident, is comfortable in that moment. He’s sure of himself, because he knows Audrey so well. They're fairly close friends, and he knows this is what he has to say to comfort her, and he has no problem saying it. But Jake’s Seymour is still shy and reserved here. He’s in no way confident or comfortable in that moment. He knows he should say these things to comfort her, but he’s still unsure and is forcing himself to actually say it instead of just thinking it. And when he delivers Seymour's verse in "Skid Row," you can feel his depression and helplessness just as well as you can feel his panic and rage in his "Meek" soliloquy. And his body language isn't just putting his hands in his pocket and "shuffling around" because he's just bad at playing "a nerd." That isn't what he's doing. He's not just playing a nerd. He's playing someone who's uncomfortable with himself and the world around him, and truthfully, he's moving around a like like I do.As for his "unprofessionalism," I'm pretty sure he was the last one into rehearsals and had only about three days, and he does do pretty well. He's not forgetting or messing up all his lines, just a few here and there, and the only lyrics he outright fucks up are in "Don't Feed the Plants," which took me a good amount of time to fully work out, and "Closed for Renovations," who's lyrics are the most complicated and sadistic Howard ever wrote. Could he have learned his lines a little bit better? Yeah, maybe. But given how little he actually did mess up, and how little time he had in rehearsals, it isn't that bad.TL;DR: I agree with everything you've said, but to me, they aren't weaknesses. They're strengths that make Jake's Seymour one of my favorites.
+Nathan Graham I mean, I'm not being a troll or anything, these are legitimate points. There are just TONS of people who could have stepped in to that roll with less than 3 days to prepare. It seems kind of unprofessional, especially from someone who's supposed to be a professional. I of course realize that the point of this production was not to be a good production, but rather a celebration of the show. It just irks me when top billed actors get paid out the wazoo to do this badly.
He's never done the show before? And do you know how little rehearsal time they have for these Encore productions? Even Ellen Greene misses one of her lines in this clip. lighten up.
+Nathan Graham his acting is also horrible. He doesn't know how to play a nerd. He just puts his hands in his pockets and shuffles around alot. And he messes up his lines SEVERAL times in this production.
