how do you keep people from breaking into your van through the license
plate holder? I'm not gonna give detailed instructions here (in part
because mine is not secure either)... but if you remove the plastic license
plate holder and note the position of the door linkage on the Econoline
vans you will see the obvious security risk.

that's true, I'm a little concerned though because that lock on the outside of the van is like a giant banner "valuables in here"...

well, the license plate holder is held in by four screws that go into little plastic nipples on the back of it. The holder is relatively flexible so that someone could get their fingers under it and if they are reasonably strong or the plastic brittle and the screws rusted(which they certainly are) one could simply break off the license plate holder with door handle and lock and actuate the linkage behind it to break in without any tools.
