Great videos. Came across some of these older extinguishers in your
collection as a volunteer firefighter. People would bring really cool
models by the station. Didn't these old trigger CO2 extinguishers not have
a safety valve? I've seen a 5lb model and couldn't find one.
+AlexTheTradGuy Yeah, the nylon valve extinguisher are cheap extinguishers. I saw a recall of nylon valve extinguishers from 1991 to 2000. Saying that the valve will "spontaneously separate itself from the extinguisher." In other words the valve explodes off of the extinguisher. Now the only extinguishers worth getting are Amerex or Ansul Sentry fire extinguishers. All the other brands are just plain cheap.
+AlexTheTradGuy I know right. Come to think of it, pistol grip extinguishers were the only ones not to have a relief valve. I have other Co2 extinguishers that are the same age as the pistol grips, but they have a relief valve. I guess that is one of many flaws that the Kidde company made.
Interesting design. I'd be curious to see how they'd behave in an overheating situation if they, in fact, lack a pressure relief valve. Good thing they're standard now.
I don't think pistol grip extinguishers had a safety valve. The one in the video, has a device where when you pull the trigger, the trigger latches and will discharge until you release the device. I don't know if that counts as a safety valve. The safety valve may only exist on bigger units.
I have a Kidde 5 lb trigger operated Co2 unit. I was lucky on the first one
that I bought. It came back with a good hydro-test and held pressure. The
second unit that bought had a good hydro-test, but would not hold pressure.
On these trigger operated units it states that the metal safety disc in the
valve assembly needs to be replace each time the valve is removed from the
cylinder. I think what happens is when the valve is tightened it flexes the
metal safety disc. If it is reused it has a chance of not sealing due to
its on-time flex. Do know where these safety discs can be purchased. Kidde
does not support the unit and claims to have not have any of discs. Thanks
+Fyr-Fyter Thanks for your info.I am thinking about purchasing a unit like yours. Have you ever had your unit hydrotested. The reason I ask is, the unit that I am looking at will need a hydro. Than means the entire valve assembly that screws onto the tank has to be removed for the hydro. Just wondering if installed a new replaceable ring'disc when you completed your hydro. Perhaps it different form the 5 lb trigger grip unit that I have is different. These particular safety discs are no longer available for the 5 lb units. Thanks
+e030396 I thought you meant that the valve has to be removed every time it is charged. The safety valve has nothing to do with the discharge valve. The owner of an extinguisher servicing company, showed the inside of one of these valves. The safety valve is completely separate from the discharge valve. The safety ring is inside the bolt shaped device, not the discharge valve. It may be different for the Kidde pistol grip extinguishers. I could probably get a safety ring for you, but it would be better and safer if you took it to a servicing company to do it for you.
+Fyr-Fyter For clarification, the valve assemble has to be unscrewed/removed from the cylinder in order to perform a functional hydrotest, which is required every 5 years. If you have a source for these metal discs let me know. Kidde claims they do not have them. This metal disc serves as a seat for the valve plunger and also serves a safety function as well.
The valves on Co2 extinguishers are NEVER taken off the extinguisher. Co2 extinguishers will have a bolt shaped object with holes in it. Inside it is a safety disk that blows when the pressure is to high (Co2 can come out of it). You can get the disk replaced at an extinguisher servicing company.
Believe it or not this extinguisher came out of Oak Ridge (no radiation).
