"My Old Kentucky Home": The reference to "darkies" has been tastefully
and thankfully removed, according to the 1986 alteration. The word "gay"
remains, retaining its original pre-civil-war (1852?) meaning. It irks me
that people consider Kentucky as having been part of the Confederate States
of America; Kentucky did not secede from the Union since its establishment
as a State in 1792.
"My Old Kentucky Home" was considered an anti-slavery song. Frederick
Douglass thought the song stimulated "the sympathies for the slave, in
which anti-slavery principles and flourish."
Also, when I was young, the state seal depicting the statesman and the
frontiersman, as I remember, included the frontiersman holding a long
rifle, which has probably been suppressed for reasons of "political
correctness" (as opposed to practicality, since a frontiersman would almost
always be armed).
The joke now is that the Kentucky State Seal represents two lawyers making
a plea bargain.
+Shamra Webster Kentucky is one of the "States" that make up the USA. It is a "Commonwealth" because if its name. There are four U.S. States that are established as "Commonwealths".

represent all the people. They are acting out the meaning of Kentucky's
motto: "United We Stand; Divided We Fall". Sprays of the state flower
{goldenrod} extend in a half circle around the picture. Flag adopted 1918

The Kentucky Wildcats and Louisville Cardinals, athletic programs for the
most prominent universities in Kentucky, are sport rivals. The teams first
played each other in 1912 (football) and 1913 (basketball). The yearly
men's basketball game is called the Battle for the Bluegrass and the yearly
football game is played for the Governor's Cup trophy. Many of the schools'
other sports teams also play annually despite the fact that the teams are
not in the same conference.
I NEED TO SAY THIS IN CAPS: KENTUCKY IS NOT A COUNTRY IT IS A STATE WHEN
THEY SAID THE WORD "COUNTRY" THERE SAYING IT IS NOT A CITY ITS A COUNTRY
BECAUSE, LETS SAY YOU LIVE ON A FARM IN THE COUNTRY BUT NOT IN THE CITY,
THAT IS WHAT THEY MEAN!!! Jesus you guys should be able to figure that
out!!!!!!!!!!!
+Mike Wilson I hope that one day Kentucky will be seen as a separate nation, as we are! You may argue that we're too small and weak, but in time we'll be stronger than Texas hopefully!
