While I do not know what goes on in Tibet proper, how the people are rounded up and their houses cleared- do they get them on a train, and say their lives will be better while taking them to a concentration camp in the desert- I do not know. Prior to the Apollo program, NASA's early rocket launches experienced a 40% failure rate but by the time the Saturn family of rockets were introduced in 1961, there was a huge turn around. In fact by the time the last Saturn was launched in 1975, they had accomplished a 100% successful launch rate of all 32 Saturn 1's, 1B's & V's. All of these launches were publicly viewed. They accomplished this due to the fact that the Saturn's were designed for manned missions and every component had to meet stringent design and testing requirements that guaranteed 99.99992% reliability . Despite that, the Saturn V F-1 engines had a disturbing combustion instability problem that was only fixed after much trial and error design workarounds. The lunar module also had combustion instability problems with it's ascent engine. Enough of a problem that it frequently made the notorious "show stoppers" list as a problem that could stop the enormous nationwide Apollo program dead in it's tracks. They did tests to make sure any oscillations caused by combustion instability would eventually dampen out. That test involves detonating a bomb(more like a blasting cap) inside the nozzle during a test firing to make sure spontaneous instability wouldn't lead to an engine explosion. The troublesome ascent stage only received approval after passing 53 consecutive bomb tests. Btw, this bomb testing method , was developed after 3 of the expensive F-1 engines for the Saturn S-1C where destroyed during testing.So despite your skepticism, the fact is a great deal of effort went into the Apollo program. There were however, problems and anomaly's with every mission the most serious of course being Apollo 13.?
