UW Madison Underage Drinking - Counseling Mandated
The University of Wisconsin at Madison will require students cited for underage drinking to attend counseling sessions and pay a fine. Ana Kasparian and Jayar ...
@Solidus1086 I was with you until the last bit. The age really only matters
for the purchasing age, not the consumption age; 35 states allow either
underage consumption outright or at least in family and certain location
settings. Federal law has various exceptions. Then it'd end up being "cool"
to go around your parents and actually buy it yourself. The good thing
about 21 is it requires someone with a chance of sense to think whether or
not they should give 14 year olds mind-altering alcohol.
In Minnesota, it is against the law to have alcohol on state property, &
that included state parks and college campuses. At the MN college I went
to, people drank in the dorms all the time. You just had to use a little
discretion. If your actions are so blatant and out of control, that even
someone who is trying to overlook it simply can't, then you busted
yourself. If you are that stupid, you deserve to get busted. That's one of
the thing college students have to learn, boundaries & limits.
The drinking age in America is idiotic. People can go overseas and kill
people with assault weapons but they can not buy a beer. People are going
to drink. By making drinking a big deal and having the legal age 21 people
are going to over do it when they first go to college. By making it taboo
more people are going to want to do it. Lower the drinking age and stop
making it such an issue. People will not go crazy the first time they are
on their own due to them already knowing what it does.
@Atakumosa That is not justice. Mercy= Less than the crime Justice= Equal
to the crime Cruelty= Greater than the crime This is cruelty. Maybe even
terrorism: systematic use of violence and intimidation to achieve some goal
This law is a form of discrimination anyway. discrimination: making a
distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group,
class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on
individual merit Either they are adults or not
That's why the drinking age should not be 21.. The drinking age in Canada
is 19 and 18 in some provinces. It is not so outrageous to lower the
drinking age to the time when you enter college/university. Why is it
acceptable to go to war at 18, but not drink..that's bullshit. It's
stupidity if you ask me. And, maybe if you demystified drinking, then
college students wouldn't have to get their stomachs pumped when they
finally get the chance to 'drink.'
@OliverJohnnyRyan Lowering the drinking age also boosts the economy, a
massive influx of kids who would be buying liquor, or getting a job to buy
liquor, who wouldn't have before because they were too afraid to walk into
a liquor store with a fake ID. It would also cut huge profits to shady
people who make fake IDs and the biggest bonus, your not giving people
criminal records for something that is a non offence in Canada, and almost
all of Europe.
Rule 1 of Epidemiology; don't combine stats that don't belong together.
Them saying all underage drinking is equally dangerous is shameful. Either
they are terrible researchers, or they are doing it intentionally for
ideological reasons. Not to mention the harm done simply BECAUSE its
illegal (ie issues with people not wanting to get help for a friend because
of illegal drinking). Also, 18 is legal to drink in Australia, and should
be in the US.
@tytuniversity Stop Complaining, and stop drinking... and in actuality one
does pay for community service when convicted-and/or-on probation in real
life; (what do u think court fees are?) so they should pay for it in
college as well.. I don't agree with the drinking age AT ALL, nor do i like
colleges taking more money from students but if your gonna do something
illegal on their campus (just like in real life) your gonna pay for it.
PERIOD.
@Solidus1086 "The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates
that setting the drinking age at 21 saves the lives of 900 young people
each year and has saved more than 25,000 lives since 1975." Comparing the
drinking age to engaging in consensual sex is ridiculous. If you want to
setup the straw man argument about joining the military at 18, why not
advocate increasing the age you can join the military instead?
@OliverJohnnyRyan Im from Australia and we can legaly drink at 18, iv being
to countrys such as Germany and Turkey and they have no drinking age. . .i
think have no drinking age would be best, also on a physiological stand
point if there is no age restriction on drinking then it never becomes a
taboo thing so in that case once people hit 18 they wont go out and get so
wasted(as much as they would now at lest)
@Solidus1086 Also i think you shouldn't be able to activly be on duty in
the army/police until you're atleast 25, driving should from a reasonable
standpoint come together with the drinking age, which should both be at 18.
In belgium it's the other way around you get to drink first (16) and drive
later (18) which i think is better, but not perfect. When i was 16 all i
cared about was getting shitfaced
It's stupid how you can drive a car at 16, become adult by law and join the
army at 18, but can't drink until you're 21...I mean seriously? Does
America not see the stupid irony in that? Here the legal age for light
stuff is 16, and hard liquor 18. That's reasonable imo. And fining underage
drinkers, sure. But 263 dollars just for the fine? That ridiculous. Maybe
100 dollars or something...
where i come from most people start drinking around 15,16 but the legal age
is 18- its very easy to purchase alcohol and get into good clubs under 18.
Most parents and adults are ok with this and all the police do if they
catch you is pour out your alcohol- this is because here we recognise that
learning to drink socially is healthy- instead of going crazy at the
ridiculously old age of 21!
@rostant999 Smoking pot is about the least harmful things a person can do.
Binge drinking is something many do at some point until they learn
moderation, whether they are 18 or 21 makes little difference. Drugs should
be legal anyway so the trafficing is a result of the laws. should everyone
who attends college be a saint?
@Solidus1086 It will never happen. I agree with 16 too but people in this
Nation are not even smart enough to stop putting people in prison for drug
addiction. Then when you start talking about children can you imagine the
ration of MADD. Reason will never outweigh the massive scream of "WHAT
ABOUT THE CHILDREN!!!"
I laughed at "... so they can counsel you on the danger of underaged
drinking" Is it more dangerous to drink at 20 ("underaged") than it is to
drink at 18 elsewhere (because it's legal)? In my country it's allowed to
buy alchohol when you're 18 but no one will give a shit if you drink at the
age of 15-17.
@Solidus1086 I think underage drinking at the age of 16 should be legal
under the supervision of an adult, and i'm from belgium the beer country.
(16 = legal, 18 for hard liquor) in the end the parents have to learn their
kids to drink responsibly, government can't do that
I wish they would do something about college drinking. I felt like my
college years were an extension of high school with all the dummies trying
to peer pressure you into doing stupid things. Maybe if schools would crack
down, students would get serious about academics.
I'm going to go against the grain here and say... this isn't a big deal.
The drinking age is 21, unfortunately. So, how are you going to discourage
it? Big hefty fines. Do I think the drinking age should be lower? Yes. But
as is... this is a good way to deal with it.
I went to College in Utah. My first drinking citation, I got $450 in fines
and 6 weeks counseling costin $300. My second citation, I got $700 in fines
and 6 months in counseling costing $1500. My third citation, I hired a
lawyer for $500 and got a slap on the wrist.
Honestly, I feel most badly for the counselors. You spend your life in
college getting your degree in psychology or therapy, or whatever it may
be, and you get hired to tell 18, 19, and 20 year olds they have a problem.
What a disillusioning waste of time for them.
@OliverJohnnyRyan "Early legal access to alcohol is associated with higher
rates of drinking as an adult. When the drinking age is 21, those under 21
drink less and continue to drink less through their early twenties." What
problem is being solved exactly?
@chrisrod01 wtf! they should pay for it. i dont agree with the age being 21
but it is. so i dont get why people are pissed off about getting
consequences for doing something illegal. and p.s. tuition shouldnt cover
that. thats bs
forget the fines. if you really want to stop underaged drinking make all
violators attend 20 hours of mandatory counseling and they will never ever
ever drink again. Counseling will bore whatever amount of alcoholism is in
you
I disagree with TYT here. The school still has to pay the counselors to do
those sessions. I don't think it's fair that tuition from responsible
students is going to pay for the stupidity of a few irresponsible students.
