Audio Technica LP120 USB. There are already plenty of videos out there on this fine turntable. I focus on the USB part of it and how to hook it up. Very easy ...

I dont have a problem with mine except like you I found the Phono cable too short so had to put an extension on. I use Roxio LP to PC record but cant get any sound while monitoring it still trying to sort that one out yet. I have it plugged into my receiver via the game input from the phono cable thats coming form the turntable.

+radio1342 That's how I have mine set up too. I like the USB cause its easier to record with and get great results and the left and right phone I plug into Game port on my receiver as I don't have a dedicated turntable input but it works great. The sound problem is with the software I found out as if you use "Audacity" the sound monitors ok while recording.

+Promoagent To avoid any confusion, I have 2 sets of "wires". The RCA cables that go from the record player to the "radio" into the AUX input. Then the USB which goes from the record player to the computer. The USB is what I found to be too short so I bought a longer one. When using USB for some reason I lose all sound on my computer. More than likely it is just a setting on my soundcard but since I am listening on the stereo anyway it really isn't too big of a deal. Then when I am done I unplug the USB and I can hear everything that recorded to Audacity and make my edits there. I also have Cool Edit Pro but it has been several years since I have used that and I have forgotten many of the tricks and uses of CE Pro. I hasve become some comfortable with Audacity that I just use that 100 % of the time

+radio1342 Really? Thats interesting,I found out by using Audacity software I can hear it while its recording to my hard drive then I do the rest with Roxio cause I like the fact I can split the tracks and name them like the CDs you buy so I can use the next or reverse track order when playing on a CD player.

+Promoagent I don't get any sound either -- on my computer but since it is also hooked up to the RCA Console via "aux" I just listen to it on there while ripping records. Most of the time when I record them I walk away from the computer anyway and just listen to the record throughout the house. Most of the time we don't convert. At first we did but now we spend most of the time just playing records. Sometimes I will want to hear something away from home and will burn it to CD for play in my truck (The new Rush Hemispheres sounds excellent when ripped to CD).

very weird that people call them techniques.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-xnrn02M4fLE/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAs/5X4n61S6dkw/photo.jpg?sz=64
+radio1342 Oh okay! I figured that's what it was because I hear EVERYONE call them that.

+digitalblasphemy1100 Yeah, my mistake as they are Tech"nicks" but I worked in the radio business for 20 years and every station I worked for the other DJ's called them "Techniques". Just a habit I guess.

Hi I have been using audacity for few years now and had no problem but just lately I tried to record some vinyl and when I press the record button I get a high pitch sound. I'm not sure why it is happening. I can record from a tape no problem but using vinyl I get this noise, could it be something to do with the settings!
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+emdeej2305 Wow, no idea what it could be. Try going into the settings make sure it is set up to "Line In - USB". At least that is how I think mine is set up (I am not at home right now so I can't check). Play around with the settings in Audacity or turn off the speakers on your computer and see if it works then. I'll try and see what my settings look like tonight when I get home but it may have to wait until the weekend. If I can replicate what is happening to you I might be able to figure out what is wrong. If I find anything I will post it here in a reply.

Thank you for being a normal guy. Tired of all the vinyl nerds complaining about slight Hums and warped platters.

+radio1342 thanks! i just got one last week. i love it!
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
No prob, this does what I need it to do. Plays my records without any complaints. Recently I did get a hum in the left channel but I e-mailed AT and they told me to take the headshell off and check the green/ground wire and it was loose. I fixed it and replaced the headshell and hum was gone. Had this for almost 2 years now and we use it almost daily and there have been no issues. If you just want to play your vinyl and make digital copies then this is the way to go!

I detect no hum too but direct connection to the arm is better. The Anti Skate is ALMOST cosmetic. It makes few difference. It is not well built. Overall it's OK. This is far away from the real Technics.

Yes, far away from the "real thing" but was in my budget and does what I need it to do. No complaints from me!

Have you done a comparison between the USB output, the 120's own preamp and an external preamp? If so, which one strikes you as the best option sonically? I am debating between getting this one and a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon, but I'm leaning heavily towards this one not only because of the price, but because my main purpose is transferring what I have to the computer, and not much beyond that.

+theoriginaljeffro No problems on mine, I've used it daily for over a year now and no issues, other than the left channel went out a few times. Turns out one of the wires going to the stylus was loose. Fixed it, no problems since.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-at7jpqd-_4Q/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAB8/8kCWmgHAvjE/photo.jpg?sz=64
I'm a fan of the on-board pre, personally.

+Larry Wilson Audio-Technica AT-LP120 turntable modifications is a video on how to remove it. Being all thumbs I'm afraid I would tear something up.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Larry Wilson Yes and there are some videos on how to remove the preamp but honestly i don't have the time or motivation to remove it. As I stated I have an external amp but I have been completely satisfied with the internal one. Who knows maybe it would sound better without but honestly when I compared The Beatles rip (Magical Mystery) from the original vinyl pressing and the 2009 remaster I thought the vinyl version sounded better than the CD version after I amplified it in Audacity.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-YUseYnKb518/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAKuU/mr2Ykzh91IU/photo.jpg?sz=64
+radio1342 I'll have to try that. From what I've read about the 120, the onboard preamp is somewhat lacking, and unfortunately, even when you switch it off, it's still in the signal path, so the sound still gets colored by it. But at this point, this would be a quantum improvement over what I have now.I actually have an ART DJPre II, but I'm looking at getting the tube-powered Bellari preamp.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
And really, Audacity is a fine program. The input levels on USB are a bit lower than what I would like (compared to something downloaded from iTunes or somewhere else the levels are a bit low). So I just use the amplify option and now I really can't tell much of a difference in a file from iTunes or a vinyl rip.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
I haven't used it, only the USB. However, I am certain you would get better sound turning off the pre-amp and using an external one. I was very satisfied with the sound I get from the USB so I saw no need to not use it. But if you have the means to use an external amp then go for it. You have a little more control over output with an external amp too.
