That's what I said : not explicitly but clearly suggested. The Jews never
mentioned the Trinity in their other scriptures. Elohim is plural you're
right. i started this exchange only for the pleasure of talking with you
:-) It seems that the dogm of the Trinity was only explicitly detailed by
the Concils. being a Christian means beleiving in the reality of the
Trinity. Cheers
Bravo to the interpreters and to the academy itself! I'm studying at
faculty of applied arts in Kragujevac, Serbia and your videos help me so
much with my preparing for history of arts exam.
its supposed to be a 'Sensual' piece by the fact that it has erotic
undertones and by the way that the feather is draped down his leg, in
effecting his senses.
''LA LAMENTACION SOBRE CRISTO MUERTO '' ES, DE LEJOS, LA OBRA DE ARTE QUE
MAS ME HA IMPACTADO EN TODA MI VIDA,,,ESAS MUJERES DE ESPALDAS, ESOS
ANGELITOS DESESPARADOS, LA TERNURA CONQUE MARIA CONTEMPLA A SU HIJO
MUERTO,,,,,,UFFFFFFFF,
Aside from the tree maintaining some symbolism for Christ's resurrection
and mortality,it also serves to focus the viewer's attention on the the
work itself and Mary holding her son.
Somehow, I don't feel the horror that is supposed to be invoked here. The
characters are rather cartoon-like, so instead of feeling horror at the
reality of their situation, it feels more like a black comedy. It's cartoon
violence where the characters don't bleed and never actually die no matter
how fatal their accident. That may not have been the Bishop's intention,
but I feel quite sure that it was the sculptor's. Quite missing are any
actual instruments of torture such as the Medieval mind was so capable of
inventing during the Inquisition. Nowhere are the fires of Hell evident.
The demons do indeed look hideous, but then so do the gargoyles which have
no more significance than the little beasts who's entwined limbs form the
knots around an initial on an illuminated manuscript page.
Thank you so much for your correction. You are absolutely right, Lazarus's
sister is not Mary Magdalene. It is worth noting however that the Golden
Legend, which would become available about a century later—but was based on
earlier common beliefs, actually does conflate these two Marys (just as I
did). Best, Steven
