I got a brand new 1976 Rabbit in North Carolina. It was a great car, so
I thought at first, since it had enough power, handled well, even in snow
in mtns, and got great mileage for the day. however, as I soon learned,
it had significant issues in NOrth America. First was on a simple trip to
the dealer to change oil, they performed a Company directed emission change
and gutted the catalyst to remove the convertor material, then to meet
emmisions they changed timing and some vacuum lines. It never ran as crisp
after that and since they just gutted the Cat. can it was noisier exhaust,
and an irritating noise. If I went thru a large puddle or water in the
road. chances are it would stop running. so you hopefully coasted the rest
of the way thru the water and let the engine heat dry out the electical,
and in ten minutes you could go again. Then I moved to Michigan and found
the heater (and defrost) could not handle cold weather, especially anyone
in the backseat. Most of the interior plastics were subject to break in
cold also. Also, on long trips in subzero you would get carburetor
icing/gas line freeze at carb. and had three tows off the Interstate in
the night. Then a Recall due to water in braklines and brakelines rusting
(they ran thru the floor inside the car to the rear brakes) I had one
burst. Then valve stem seals were shot at 40,000 miles, I replaced mine
twice, but I believe this was recalled too. Final straw was at 85,000
miles the carb, needed replacement (two dealers confirmed); the VW carb was
rediculus price so I put on a recommended Holley Carb. and it ran better,
but still not like new. Finally with the floorpan and unibody rails
rusting out, dealer would not put it on the hoist anymore (dangerous) I
decided it was too dagerous to drive also, and sold it for $150. My 1972
Ford Pinto was a much better car, with no issues at all in 60,000 miles,
except it was very underpowered only in hill country (like NOrth
Carolina).so had to sell it.
My dad had 2 1980 MK1 Rabbit Diesels, that he bought in 1985-86. One was in
Pennsylvania and other in California. The Pennsylvania Rabbit was given to
my aunt and move to Colorado. She left the key on door by mistake and
someone has stolen it and gone to Florida with it. The California Rabbit,
my dad was on his way back in Pennsylvania with it and he said the engine
was over revving and was gonna blow up. It was the timing belt that went
bad. It broke at the desert. Those were the Rabbits.
Wow... my father bought one of these brand new in 1976 and it was handed
down to me for my first car in 1981. Mine was nearly identical to this one,
but a Rallye Yellow 4-door with a black interior (same white headliner
though). It was absolutely stripped just like this one... no carpet, no
A/C, no radio (until I installed an aftermarket one). I drove it until 1987
and loved it! Wish I had kept it. This video brings the memories flooding
back. Thanks for posting!

Amazing story for any amazing car. my 84 rabbit has 50k on the clock right
now and im looking to find a callaway turbo for it in the future. a big
thing for me is i do not want to engine swap considering the aesthetics of
the car and all the history behind it.
Lance…fire your camera person. Where's your head? Or were you trying to
remain anonymous?? You didn't fool me…I know it's you!!
(Interesting story, nonetheless)

octanaje ?
Takin the wife's car down the 1/8th for fun. Stock 2.5 Rabbit with bald tires. 10.3 was the fastest run of the night but I like this run more. Come on, you just got beat ...
@cherb32 1994 Ford Mustang GT 0-60 mph 6.6 Quarter mile 14.9 2009
Volkswagen Rabbit S 0-60 mph 7.5 Quarter mile 15.8 These numbers tell it
all - 15 yrs older and the GT still wins. If you "kill" a GT, it means
either 1) Mustang driver is shit, or 2) Mustang wasn't racing you. I also
don't speak out of my ass either, because just the other day I was driving
my friend's Rabbit S w/ Intake + Exhaust + Tune. Fun car to drive no doubt,
but it sure as hell isn't beating an 07 GT's 5.2s 0-60!
Still love the commentary every time I watch it. My VW ran a 10.46 the
previous race so, something close to that for this one. Stang was sleepin
or it was on it's last leg. Either way, that stupid Rabbit was fun. Not
fast at all, but fun.
