Paralyzed Person Walks a Mile

To answer your question,no I don't use a trunk brace. I posted some more
videos of me going up and down stairs and other things. I learned to walk a
very specific way that is not taught at any rehab or even the best
hospitals. The doctors say it is impossible for a completely paralyzed
person to walk like I do(its true if you do it their way)but I am living
proof they are wrong. I know others that walk like me. You can learn to
walk just like this if you are interested and willing to work for it
Rest assured I have no problem with stairs for the most part. If you don't
believe me at this point, come to Utah and lets have lunch. I've had many
people mention forearm crutches. In general, people think using a lot of
arm strength is necessary/helpful for walking in leg braces. I believe and
was taught the opposite. Instead of mainly arm strength I use trunk & back
muscles & hip shifting to initiate leg movement. Canes facilitate this much
better than forearm crutches.
I want to make it very clear that I have no feeling or movement from the
waist down. The vertical lift of my feet comes from shifting my hips using
the Erector spinæ muscles and the forward motion of my feet uses the Hip
Flexor muscle. These muscles are above the waist. I learned to walk at the
"Sit Tall Stand Tall" program in Provo, Utah. I have absolutely zero
function in my legs. I also have no quads, glutes, etc. All leg motion is
initiated above the waist.
This is very inspiring for me because I am too a paralyzed patient. It has
been nine months now after accident(spinal cord injury). I am able to walk
normally now but I can't run. My left hand and leg is more affected and
have severe pain in chest area and left hand. But now I decided I will walk
to the Temple on Jan 1st 2010 which is 8 miles from my home no matter what
happens to me. Thanks for the inspiring video. I am from India. Great job
and all the best.
I'm amazed at what you are doing. I have a daugher with a T12 injury. She
is starting to get return and has enough where she can use an AFO on one
leg and KAFO on the other. She is far from giving up her wheelchair. The
tightness in her hips prevent her from standing straight. We fight the
tightness daily and can't seem to loosen them up. Did you have hip
tightness and if so how did you rid of it? Oh she crawls all over the house
with no trouble.
Wow! You obviously have NO idea what "complete" means in relation to spinal
cord injury. Loosee is not a T-12 complete, the very definition of
"complete" means that walking like that with obvious leg etc muscle working
would be impossible . I'm sure some doctor told him that at one point, but
now spinal shock is gone and there is a lot of function.
I am a T-12 "complete" and this would be impossible for me without forearm
crutches and a LOT more arms than you seem to be using(I've done a lot of
walking with long leg braces, when I first left rehab,I was going to "walk"
full time...)Do you have a brace to holds your trunk? WHY NOT POST A VID OF
YOU GOING UP THE STAIRS TO YOUR APARTMENT?
Thanks, but no, I'm NOT interested in learning to walk like THAT.(I already
can) Practicality took over somewhere in 27 years of being a gimp. I am
much more interested in doing the best I can for the U.S.Ski Team. You can
be on the Team just like me,if you are interested and willing to WORK for
it. WHERE ARE YOUR STAIR CLIMBING VIDS?
Not skeptical, I just want to see it. Go up the side without plywood... I
am still having trouble with the fact you say you're a T-12 "complete". I
put on my braces and tried your gait, really tough,I prefer the "swing
through" gait. We can do lunch anytime you say, do you get up to Park City
at all.
That stupid plywood fell out in a few weeks anyway. I'd be willing to drive
to Park City (it is really nice up there, the wife can do some shopping)
Maybe you'll heckle me less in person than you do on the internet :) I am
also interested in the mono-ski thing, but I've never done it.
Great, post some outdoor ones with the back(rise)of the step missing like
the ones your Dad fixed at your place. Is there any reason you use canes
instead of forearm crutches? It seem a lot of stress on your wrists(when
you climb stairs).
whooops! I missed this comment/reply before posting my other. I thought
your walk looked a LOT like the Sit Tall Stand Tall teaches with the hip
gait. How long were you in the program to get where you are?
Were you a part of the Sit Tall Stand Tall program, or were you part of a
different rehab program? Either way, AWESOME JOB!!! Congrats on getting to
where you are.
It's easy, I just twist my hips so my toes don't get stuck under the stair.
You can see it in one of the videos of me going upstairs. So are you still
skeptical?
Yes, we have been stretching twice a day and couldn't get below 30 degrees.
Went to Project Walk and got to 10 degrees. Hopefully we can keep 10 or
better.
