+Kent McManigal You don't have to. Really depends how clean it is, sometimes on certain things i hit it with Rustoleum 2 in 1 Primer.

Very interesting tutorial and beatiful results! What purpose does the clear coat in between layers serve if you don't mind me asking?
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-BjCtYGJdzsk/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAKo/iMK7f5cCkB0/photo.jpg?sz=64
If you don't you would basically get one solid color. The other colors you put on top would soak into the bottom colors. The clear coat acts like a barrier.

Thank you Vaughn, excellent video. I had couple of questions. Once you use the finger tips, do you let it dry some, then use the whisk brush? Next when you use the whisk brush do you lightly smooth over it? I just did a test run, finger tips all looked great, but immediately after I tried with brand new whisk brush, and I think maybe I needed to lightly go over as it left some parts with marks. Overall it looked decent for my first test. Thx. Daniel
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-d3pJKbMRrZo/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAGs/XJhrm8ZBKWg/photo.jpg?sz=64
The trick is to get the right amount of paint on the surface. If it is too thick you will end up with the finger pulled areas being too high. In other words keep your graining solution just thick enough to spread on the panel. I whisk right away and aggressively. Keep a pail of water close to clean the whisk like Bob Ross cleans his bigger brushes. The reason the whisk works so well is that it pulls paint away instead of smoothing it which gives you the look of wood fibers.

your work is very good how can you recomend the paint lady her cds are the worst i spent money on them very bad
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-d3pJKbMRrZo/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAGs/XJhrm8ZBKWg/photo.jpg?sz=64
People start off at very different levels of ability. For some of us, art has been part of our lives and we tend to jump to an intermediate level quickly. For others it's a struggle just to find the courage to go to the store and buy some paint. If the program helps getting the mind thinking it has done it purpose. It is intended as a starting point to get a person with no previous experience to indulge in something that they find intimidating and otherwise would not have attempted. Obviously for you the need is there for a greater challenge. My videos start off at intermediate and continue to more challenging level. I have been tardy at producing more videos but intend to make more. I hope this explains . Good luck.

For most of my faux finishes I try to sand in between coats. Makes for a nicer finish. Usually I like to use "scotch pads" because they are fine and don't leave typical sand paper scratch marks.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
Vaughan, that is amazing! Great video. Have you done faux douglas fir? I would imagine might be sort of similar but just a different blend of colors? Unless vg fir which i imagine you'd need to use a tool to get the closer lines? Great instruction.
