Yes, you're right. The North would have had to have found a way to free the existing slaves of the South prior to allowing the South to separate. Of course, that would not have prevented the South from buying new African slaves and so the injustice, while interrupted, would have likely continued. We have no idea what would have resulted from such an alternative history but, for example, the North could have refused to trade with the South on goods produced by slave labor.

The North should have let the South separate in the first place. Imagine how much more successful a Northern United States would have been today if we didn't constantly have to contend with the under-educated, fundamentalist and bigoted Americans of the Southern states. Sure, the North won the civil war militarily but the Southern mentality remains the same today. (Yes, I know, there are a certain percentage of well educated and honorable people living in the South)

If the south gained independence it'd be a diplomatic time bomb and eventually resulting in war, leading to the north retaking the south again. The south may have a lot of dumb rednecks but unfortunately they also have a lot of of natural resources = money for war.
