The study of consciousness has grown by leaps and bounds in the past few
years. Christoph Koch is studying consciousness at Caltech. I saw him give
a talk at a consciousness conference in Pasadena a few years ago. He was
such a dynamic, passionate speaker that i bought his book, "The Quest For
Consciousness: A Neurobiological Approach". I'm glad that I have a
background in neuropharmacology or I may have been totally overwhelmed by
the book. Anyway, science is making inroads in this area.
Respectfully, I think that the speaker is wrong on a few counts here. For
starters, the aforementioned Tyson quote is exactly right. Secondly,
Dawkins and Wilson certainly do not ascribe to the sort of view described
here. It is a drastic misinterpretation (or misrepresentation) to make
claim that Dawkins and Wilson believe that the only point to life is
reproduction. In the ultimate, Darwinian sense, this is of course the case.
Unfortunately, many people, often whom are otherwise bright, fail to make
the necessary distinction between facts of the natural world, versus
philosophy as applied to humanity and society. Wilson and Dawkins are
forced constantly stave off these false presumptions, made mostly by
religious folk who conflate their evolutionary work with their world
philosophies.
Science? - how is a theory proven by science when evidence does not exist
to prove it? - evolution (as a gentleman called Darwin once said on more
than one occassion) is a theory - once we have evidence of a species
changing in to another species or in to an intermediate form, then it might
be fact, but not until!
@TransparentChocolate - "Simply because we do not currently have a deep
understanding of cognition/consciousness and how it formed, doesn't mean we
never can." So very true; well stated.
