F1 (Formula 1) Jacques Villeneuve & Michael Schumacher Montreal Canada Qualifying 1997
Here is the last couple of minutes for the 1997 Canadian Grand Prix Qualifying Session. Jacques driving the Williams FW19 Renault (the best looking of the 90's ...
+HovercraftHoliday it's not like salo was a rookie who hopped into the car and was immediately faster than his more established team mate. salo himself was rated a very good driver who never had the car to show for it.yes at hockenheim salo helped irvine win the race but in austria irvine beat coulthard in a straight fight in a significantly slower car.look i'm not saying irvine was world class but he was clearly a fast driver who lacked commitment. barichello was also utterly useless against schumacher in 2000 and 2001 whereas the avg gap between all team mates shrunk from 2002-onwards. irvine was very good pre-1996 and did well in the jaguar from 2000. the only time he looked ridiculously slow in his entire career was when his team mate was arguably the best of all time.
+Mark FormulaRacer Mika Salo easily outraced Irvine in Hockenheim and Monza, outqualifying him for both races. That's how "fast" Irvine was. Salo would have won in Hockenheim too if not order by Ferrari to let Irvine take the win. At Monza Salo's best lap time was 0,8 seconds better than Irvine's. A moderately skillful driver like Salo came into the team and almost instantly beat somebody that had been there for four seasons. No wonder Ferrari didn't retain him for 2000.Irvine didn't manage a single pole in his career and only a single fastest lap. Not even when he became Ferrari's number 1 driver at the second part of the 1999 season. No matter how you look at that it's far from impressive, especially considering he had a really good Ferrari in 1998 and 1999. Fast he definitely wasn't. And let's not overlook the fact that the Ferrari was completely designed around Schumacher and his style of driving. Alesi and Berger struggled with the 1996 Benetton designed around Schumacher's driving style. Senna beat Prost in the same car. Prost was the most successful driver in F1 history at that time. Schumacher beat Irvine. Yeah, Irvine is comparable to the likes of Prost...I seem to recall Frentzen beating Schumacher in karting and he also happened to put a Jordan-Mugen on pole in 1999 against the likes of Mika Hakkinen in the McLaren-Mercedes. What did Irvine ever do with a Jaguar for three seasons? Frequently outqualified by Pedro de le Rosa. Schumacher was much faster than Irvine? Wow. Impressive.
+Theodore Mosin Irvine was pretty fast before he joined ferrari. in the jordan in 1995 especially he destroyed rubens in qualifying. in fact people in 1995 believed schumacher was going to have a tough time having irvine as his team mate. irvine was not slow, schumacher made him look slow - which is not a shame for irvine, because schumacher was only outqualified 10 times by all his team mates put together in a ten year period from 1992 to the beginning of 2002. schumacher was simply a demon in that time.
Well, Irvine was never a fast driver. How do I know? His grand total of zero pole positions and 1 fastest laps in 148 starts is pretty far from impressive. Irvine managed 4 front-row starts in his career. Considering that he only managed 4 front-row starts it's fair to assume he was sitting in the fastest car when he managed them.4 front row starts seems pretty weak compared to Jarno Trulli who managed 15 front row starts (4 of them poles) with Jordans, Renaults and Toyotas. Trulli never sat in a top car. Fisichella managed 11 front starts and he put a Benetton on pole in 1998 and a Force India on pole in 2009 in Spa. Alesi managed 10 front rows with uncompetitive Ferraris and Saubers. Old man Berger managed 32 front row starts (12 of them poles) and 21 fastest laps when he raced against Senna, Prost, Piquet and Mansell in his youth and against Schumacher, Hakkinen, Hill and Villeneuve in his mid 30's.Do I even have to mention other contemporaries like Barrichello, Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher and the champions? When somebody like Thierry Boutsen spent more laps leading than Irvine and when somebody like Nick Heidfeld both has more poles and fastest laps, then Irvine isn't somebody you would use to assess your speed against. While the Williams was indeed the mostly the best car in 1997 (although only the 5'th most reliable as proven by laps raced in 1997) Irvine wasn't somebody you would want to be measured against. Period.
