Hey were did you get the schematics or instructions, parts any info I'm
trying to build my own, if you can email it to me I would greatly
appreciate thanks
Cool little amp! 12AX7s for the preamp tubes? But, the lack of a speaker
load affects the output transformer, not the preamp tubes, right? Amp tech
has come a long way, while I still favor an all-tube amp for "that"
sound/tone, solid state is cool when it's done right. i.e. I bought an
Acoustic 150 head to replace a couple of Super Reverbs in 1972. It got
stolen & the replacement 2 yrs newer didn't sound right. I see there are
mods now, a "fix." Gonna try it one day, back to tax forms, now. :(
mesa amps are shit okay. as an electrical engineer i can tell you mesa amps
are not shit. not at all, they are well designed and use the best
components available. did i blow windows out no crack them yes. go jack a
maverick to 10 suddenly it will crack windows its not the volume at 10 its
the shock wave of suddenly jacking the volume up like that did it. yes in a
to story house incandescent bulbs will back themselves out dont believe me
play for a couple months at high volume
a good tube amp properly taken care of really needs zero maintenance. i've
had the same tubes in my mesa maverick for 10 years and it gets played
every day of course i cant turn any master volume past 4 or my ears may
bleed, seriously once i was playing and somehow my cable jacked my master
volume to ten and it blew out two windows in my house. not to mention if
you live in a two story house and you play on the second level. make sure
ya light bulbs downstairs are secured well
otherwise they will back themselves out and fall and create a mess.
especially the new fluorescent ones which explode. i turned a walk in
closet into my iso room where my three cabs sit and i run two amps in
stereo even in an interior walk n closet i still get noise complaints all
the time. that just makes me crank my shit louder
@slumpytube Nope, the ZT Lunchbox is roughly twice as large & has it's own
speaker. It's also a 200W amp that will drive extention cabs, no problem.
Big sound on it's won, bigger through cabs, all solid state, but a good
crunch/distortion when the gain is turned up. Just got one, impressive.

Its a great sounding amp as the video shows but the $500 price tag really
upsets me :-(. I don't see why you'd want to spend that kind of money on it
besides the novelty factor. It would be quite useful in bedroom situations
though
overpriced for what it is. really $500.00 they out of thier minds. for that
little thing. I gues no one is buying them so they have to jack the price
up. $100 bucks a watt. I aint rushing to the store for one.......
Thanx Dave... Your a lot of help. I love the videos,... Learned a lot from
you.. still do. Keep it up sir. Im starting my own channel soon... Will
send you a link when I do.. thanx again sir!
I don't think you know what you're talking about. Unless you're speaking
metaphorically, you did not blow windows out of your house. Also, Mesa amps
are pieces of shit.
Awesome little amp, but really expensive! $500 for that sucker!
World's Smallest TUBE Amplifier - The Z.Vex Nano Guitar Amp
Folks, something I forgot to mention in this video ... on the bottom of the Z.Vex Nano is a speaker, making this NOT only the smallest tube amplifier head, but tube ...
I'm currently in the process of building a 'micro valve amp'. Mine is, I
think, about the same size but it's difficult to work out exactly how big
the Nano is from this movie. You'll get two Nanos for about a grand. The
one I'm working on will have an ECL83, an ECC83 and will work directly from
the power socket: no 12 volt 'wall-wart'. Mine will have 2 watts output:
that is 4 x the output of the Nano. On my Web, I usually publish the design
for other folks to build. It would be difficult, for me to make mine as
asthetically pleasing, however: since this company has all the right
tooling and space for it, they've a considerable advantage. Nice movie,
thanks for uploading.
The more DYI something is these days the more it is sold for. Hint, just
build it yourself. It's not difficult to tweak a basic tube amp circuit. I
learned 30 years ago at the age of 17 how to mod amps just by getting a few
Fender chassis that a music store didn't want anymore. Got a set of 1950
U.S. Navy electronics training manuals and got busy. I highly recommend the
Groove Tubes book. Amp building can be fun and you can customize your own
sound. Electronic organs are another source of fun!
NEVER built an amp without a PT! Not only it's dangerous, since you're
gonna be connected to the mains, but it could damage your tubes, since
there's noting controlling the max current going to the circuit in case of
a short circuit. Oh yeah, it's also illegal. If you wanna do it on the
cheap, use an isolation transformer, so you're isolated from the mains. Or
you can use a SMPS circuit to get your B+ from an AC adapter, or even a
battery (just make sure your battery can supply enough power).
Thank you, but I am 40 years a EE and HAM. In this amp, the highest B+ is
about the same at the heater voltage. Even a standard voltage doubler
circuit with a full wave and electrolytics never quite doubles the voltage.
Such chassis are an interesting part of our electronic history. Of course,
a non x-former chassis requires more care, that's why UL finally banned
them from new production in ca.1965. But it's not like the lad is playing
with C4 proximinty fuses or anything!
Hey, don't blame me! Radio and small amp manufactures were building units
without PTs for 30-40 years until UL ended the practise. I have a wonderful
1945 Westinghouse H-125 radio that is as safe as can be. It has a 50 volt
heater on the power tube! BUT, it also has no significant potential vs.
ground on the chasis and is works great. I also own a 2 watt Rex amp that a
metal-head will love. The tubes are cheap when you find 'em. Most guys see
a 35 volt heater and freak!
=) ...that was the 'My Tone Sucks!' video, correct? Much appreciated and
I'm definitely not saying what you do sucks. As mentioned, I greatly
appreciate your efforts, because I've been through Trial & Error and now I
do what I can not to make those same mistakes. Everyone is going to have
their preferences, etc.. but if you went through the amp features, and
'tones' that they're capable of.. that would help immensely. It would at
least give us a better idea ;)
Well, it aint as dangerous as jumping out of planes. Actually it's quite
safe if you follow a few safety rules -See the ARRL Handbook. But those
circuits are fun. Add up the heater voltages in series & it will come out
to about 115-120VAC. Pretty cool, eh? The designers were not the geniuses
you might think, as the tube manufacturers participated in this. -E.g. you
have a 35 volt heater in the rectifier and power tube. That's 70 volts
right there. -See?
Obviously a great, great amp, but I can't get past the whole 1/2 Watt
thing... Is this amp even gonna be loud enough to gig? Say I wanted to play
out of a 412 cab...i don't even know if that could top the drums when they
aren't mic'd. I've heard that all-tube wattage is way different from solid
state, so if this is 1/2 watt, what does that translate to solid-state
watts? I really wanna buy one of these, can anyone help with any of these
questions? Thanks
For only 10 bucks more than that, I bought a vintage fuzzy EL34 Carvin
X100B, plus an Ibanez TS7 Tubescreamer, plus a 17-point modification kit
for the pedal, PLUS a used 2x10 cab. For 40% of this cost, you can buy a
Blackheart Little Giant. Add a BH112 cab and you're still less than 80% of
the cost of this amp alone, WITHOUT a cabinet. Don't get me wrong, it
sounds good, but $500 is out of control for a bedroom/practice/recording
head.
I'm just pointing out the danger in doing that. There's always the
possibility of some random "genius" to read these comments and think they
can build a xformerless tube amp when they can't even properly build a Lego
kit by the instructions. I now see you know exactly what you're doing.
Well, have fun on your build, sir!
Tone King. When you play melodic guitar, like you did part way through this
video, your sound demos sound fantastic. I much prefer that type of playing
in your sound demos than the random note playing with little or no
expression. Keep up the great work (many of us really appreciate it)!
Everyone here complaining about the amp being $500: stop it, please. This
is a high quality amplifier and you guys are upset because it is 500 for .5
watt? That is ridiculous. The tone out of this is better than most amps I
have heard under $1000 and it is perfect for home practice.
i watched this vid and was like ok cool, sounds ok, and was like ok a nice
small cheap little amp... then i saw how much this piece of crap would cost
me: 550 euro's!!! ARE THEY FUCKING KIDDING ME? I could get an ACTUAL fking
marshall jcm900 for that money. what a bunch of bull!
What worries me isn't the heater voltage... I'm a technician, and I know
how dangerous electricity can be. I'm just warning you to make your project
the right way: make it SAFE. Do as you prefer, though. I just wish you luck
on your project, and be careful!
Sorry.. I should have used Sloppy ; ) Have you re-demoed the nano with
another guitar (Single coils or PAFs)? (I didn't get that video link) I
honestly appreciate your efforts, but it's difficult to gauge the sounds
that are capable from these amps. \m/
if patton oswalt had chose guitar instead of stand up comedy and then had a
son who was ruffly the same age as him, whom he then taught to play guitar,
this is the amp that would have been passed on to his son...who's some how
playing it right now...
yup - I'm with you. 3 years ago was a different ballgame for me. Different
equipment. I've learned a lot since then. In fact - probably many of us
YouTube guys have learned a ton. The comments do help, so keep em' coming!
Thank you! Rock ON! \m/
Like I said, it's not a critial mass experiement with U235! I.e. it's prett
safe for beginners. In most cases, the highest votage will be about 180 VDC
(via a "doubler circuit"). As long as they know something about grounding,
they will live.
For 500€ ,I PREFER TO BUY THE MARSHALL DSL1 THAT YOU CAN FIND USED BY NOW
AND IT ALSO HAS A DI FOR RECORDING!!! THIS IS A COMMERCIAL STUFF MADE FOR
BEING "THE SMALLEST AMP OF..." MY ASS! ADDIND TO THAT ,IT SOUNDS CRAPPY !!!
Sounds GREAT, but the price is running FIVE BILLS??? I'd love to have one,
but not for that kind of money. Too many other options in that price range.
Thanks for sharing though, it was VERY cool MAN!
I'm actually more interested in their iMPAMP than this Nano. Although this
is a brilliant idea, there are more amps that can be had for ~$500 that can
serve more than being a bedroom/living room amp.
Wow, thats really neat for toneking thanks for sharing. So small jeesh you
could fit it in your pocket lol. What next cabinets that are 6 inches by 6
inches that go up to 250 watts? haha
$500 for a push pull 12AT7?!! How about $75-$100 in parts and a couple of
weekends? With some older tube types, I could make it without a power
x-former and make it even smaller.
@lmsjr to be honest i have it...and it requires a Tele and the smooth
overdrive it has in it to really shine, you with a "V" and active pickups
make it sound like a "turd"..
@Guitarist 19992 Erm... How are they terrible.. It won a gold award (5
stars in all categories) in guitarist magazine. And having heard it I think
it sounds good...
Don't know if I could tade in my Marshall for it, but you're SOOO right!
That lil box DOES have Marshall....RIGHT beside it! Thanks bro! LONG LIVE
THE TONE KING!!!
@missinglink27 Id say this thing is honestly at best only worth $180...Its
cool, the tone isn't horrid, and its super mini...but thats what youre
paying for MINI!
500 bucks is an overkill. i agree with that.. but it does have good
tones.... but you know.. i got a crate v5, with groove tubes, and a
eminence red coat for 200,
why does the quality of your sound always so bad. like not to bash you,
your a cool cool man. But it always sounds so distorted and raunchy. not it
a good way.
Cool, but WAYYYY too expensive, you can find a Marshall JCM 900 100 Watt
head in good condition on Craigs List for that much. This thing should cost
about $120.
seriously get a life -__-. "Guess who I had in mind.". Like wow why would I
think a single second of what it is? and even that, you're not even
arguing, but rather speak of bullshit. YOU KNOW NOTHING about amps, or
pedal reliated to guitar. So I think you should try going to a music store
and try to learn what is an "amp". The Nano sucks. Why? Cause it cost about
500$, and does less than a normal "amp". If you want to record something,
you will not take this amp, but rather a BRAND NAME Amp.
That is some cheesy grounding instructions. My sub mini tube amp uses
military/hearing aid tubes. Yss, Hearing aids were once tube powered
devices the size of a pack of smokes. My small amp uses tubes I will not
disclose here, and has a grounding stud, and fahnestock clips so "if you
need to ground to a rack mounted monstrosity you can drop the third prong
and or use a separate ground wire, but I have been in the music amp game
since 1980, and worked in my uncle's store since the 70s.
1. You need to grow up. 2. You need to stop reading too many Harmony
Central user reviews, they can mess with your head (as is the case here).
3. You need to stop looking at "brand names" (nice word, by the way-where
did you learn it?) 4. You need to stop arguing with strangers in YouTube
(that you know nothing about who they are) and spend that time on something
constructive, like going to school. Or playing with a band and recording.
It's much more fun, you know. You should try it.
@tom40hk Then it's going to be a bit more complicated. This Zvex has quite
simple circuits so it's easy just to find the place for ground connection.
The Zoom G2 you have has a transformer along the power cord and it should
take care of the ground issue. If you're getting that 50/60hz buzzing then
try connect to another outlet. You can try to hook the ground cable to any
metal surface you can find on the unit find the best place for a ground. It
just might work.
I was lucky enough to play through one of these and i have 2 say it sounds
so much better in person than in any of these youtube videos! I see people
are complaining about $500 but if you google 'boutique guitar amp' you can
expect to pay up to 10 times more for a similar power, and they dont come
hand painted OR with zacks AMAZING customer service!!! But i just have to
say... It does what it says on the tin, and it does it amazingly!!!!
"All you do is turn your mic preamp up?" What kind of mic preamp? "It's as
loud as any other amp." When combined with what? RC booster...so that's
$500 + $250...um, ok, maybe in a few years when lots of companies are
making these and the price drops. It's fantastic. Can't argue with the
tone. Very fat. So we were hearing at least 4 or 5 different pieces of gear
excluding the guitar?
And finally #4, you have nothing to say. I play with my friends guitar. You
know nothing about amps as I've said. And also, nothing about my life! So
maybe before saying "stop arguing with strangers in youtube", you started
something THAT I WROTE 4 fkin months ago. So you are damm late... Just stop
trying to be cool and cool down -__-
I agree....I hate when people demo something with a bunch of effects. It's
already hard to "really know" what something sounds like off a video..the
effects just make it worse. Learn to play with good tone and an honest
vibrato and you don't need to cover up your playing with a bunch of
softning pillow goop:)
sure that's all you got to say for sure: "Get to school". That's all people
says to other, you are not cool.. I'm sorry. for the first argument: "grow
up".. On which point? Secondly, Harmony Central? I don't even know what it
is.. For #3, I have nothing to say except that it is two words I learned at
school.
from the roll bar to ground. Ground could be any object that eventually
makes an electrical connection with the earth. This inclueds some metal
switch plates, and often even house hold plumming. In his case the rack for
his equpment was already grounded, so connecting the amp to the rack
grounded the amp.
no but let say I could and MANY people can do the same using software. The
fucking pedal he's using is completly piece of crap, why? Because what he's
doing can damage and even break that piece of crap mini-amp that cost like
500$.... That's few of what crap it is..
@MintJustin Thanks, I will try to hook up a wire to a metal. By the way,
when I am playing with g2, I can eliminate some of the noise by touching
the bypass knob by touching it with my body. I guess that is the ground
loop noise that I eliminated.
I love this guys attitude. He isn't a cocky prick about his playing, like
most other guitar players who think they are gods. This guys guitar voice
is heard all over and it hasn't driven his ego up.Great guy and great player
There is a book with some interesting tube amp projects I recently found on
ebay including a 1'2 Watt and 3 Watt.you can build it !You can also see my
Tiny terror clone I've built! youtube.com/watch?v=CUH0icYKgwg
Cool amp, I need to have one. By the way, Michael thompson is one of the
best players out there. Listen to the long outro solo of "give love a
chance" with Michael Thompson Band, It's on youtube. Simply amazing.
wow such they worst argument ever named. It's like saying "go cut yourself
sunday and bleed". It's not funny you n00b. Maybe you should try yourself
the amp before making a such ridiculous comment.
its just the booster and amp. everything sounds better with delay/verb
though. you can get this sound with a boss overdrive pedal, a megaverb, and
an epi valve junior though.
what the fuck... Do you record a lot or what ? haha 'cause what a lot of
mixing tables ;) Just give me a guitar, effects and an amp and I'm happy :D
Great vid thx
@tom40hk He did that to eliminate the ground loop noise. If you mean to
dampen the gain noise then i'm afraid it won't work. They are two different
noise type.
I would like to know what pickups he is using on his strat...You could tell
he was blown away after checking his AC boost. Thats really good playable
tone!
Heavenly tone from such a tiny amp... and a strat sounding like Joe Perry's
Les Paul - if someone can afford it (and let it live in a studio or a
home)...
Really? I can just attach it to a metal part of my desk or lamp? Thats it?
sounds so simple. Thanks dude
ZVex Nano Head compared to Rock Block amp
This is a demo comparing the ZVex Nano Head to the Rock Block 1 watt amp by Surprise Sound Lab. I'm playing a Gibson ES335 and the amps are driving an ...
Hey john thanks for the great demos. Your rhythm smokes man, awesome.
Anyway... these amps, can they really be used as an OD pedal, as well as an
amp??? Like could I drop that 1watt Rock Block into my Mesa F-50 for crazy
gain? Seems like these guys would be fantastic for practice... but I'm
looking at the pros and cons of say going this route vs. a little 1W
Blackstar amp. Thanks again. Truly inspiring playing, always nice to have
that as a bonus to a demo!
Holly crap didnt expect this. I liked the rock block more, both kickass but
the zvex seemed more buzzy, Im just one who likes a smooth edge. and fer
what, $120~ cheaper.. i'd do the block.. sweet demo
